Abstract

A walking stick has an integral personal alarm. Two types of alarm system may be used in suitably adapted walking sticks, preferably situated between the handle and the stick. One Type is a gas cylinder powered alarm, operated by finger pressure through the on alarm control aperture in the side of the upper part of the stick. Another Type is a battery powered alarm which is similarly operated by the finger. The alarm may be situated inside a suitable housing in the top of the stick.

Description

This invention relates to walking sticks with built in alarm systems.
Existing walking sticks are usually used by infirm and disabled persons as a means of assisting mobility. The said persons are prone to attacks by persons or animals due to their immobility and therefore at a disadvantage in being able to defend themselves. Any alarm system which can be easily carried would be an advantage to the said persons in an emergency.
According to the present invention there is provided different alarm systems built into walking sticks which can be operated by persons in control of the said walking sticks. The alarms are enclosed inside special housings joined to the handle and stem of the adapted walking sticks with easy access to the alarm control switches and or pressure points. There is also provided the means to exchange the alarms when necessary. Several types of alarm housings have been adapted for the use of different alarms.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : Design A shows FIG 1 and 2 being parts of a walking stick with built in alarm system which includes a gas cylinder alarm 19. FIG 3 shows the complete assembled walking stick with built in alarm system with a gas cylinder alarm 19.
FIG 1 Shows the screw on coupling 12 with hollow tubular centre and machine threaded base.
Shows the alarm housing 11 being a hollow tube with a alarm control aperture 15 and vent aperture 16.
The inside top part is machine threaded which allows the screw on coupling 12 to be screwed on and off as required.
Both are constructed in plastic and aluminium materials.
FIG 2 Shows a gas cylinder alarm 19 consisting of two parts, a gas canister with a pressure cap on the top. A pressure cap vent 20 allows the gas and alarm sound to escape when the pressure cap is pressed.
FIG 3 Shows the complete walking stick with built in alarm system including a gas cylinder alarm 19.
Design B shows FIG 4 and 5 being parts of a walking stick with built in alarm system including a battery alarm 27. FIG 6 shows the complete assembled walking stick with built in alarm system with a battery alarm 27.
FIG 4 Shows the screw on coupling 22 with hollow tubular centre and machine threaded base.
Shows the alarm housing 21 with alarm switch aperture 25 and sound vent aperture 26. It is a hollow tube with the inside top part is machine threaded which allows the screw on coupling 22 to be screwed on and off as required.
Both are constructed in plastic and aluminium materials.
FIG 5 Shows a battery alarm 27 containing an alarm 28 and alarm switch 29.
FIG 6 Shows the complete walking stick with built in alarm system including a battery alarm 27.
Referring to the drawings Design A comprises a walking stick with built in alarm system which is constructed of plastic and aluminium materials especially built to hold a gas cylinder alarm 19 which can be operated by finger pressure applied on to the pressure cap of the gas cylinder alarm 19 through the alarm control aperture 15.The construction of the model Design A is as follows A walking sticks handle 10 is cut from the stem 13 and fitted into the screw on coupling 12 and secured by bolt 17 and nut 18 fastener.
The stem 13 is cut to the required length and a rubber or metal ferrule 14 is fitted to the base. The top of the stem 13 is flitted into the narrow tube of the alarm housing 11 and secured by bolt 17 and nut 18 fastener.
The gas cylinder alarm 19 is placed into the alarm housing 11 with its pressure cap vent 20 in line with the vent aperture 16 thus allowing the gas and alarm noise to escape when the pressure cap on the gas cylinder alarm 19 is operated.
The top of the pressure cap is then visible in the lower part of the alarm control aperture 15 and ready to be operated by finger control pressure.
The screw on coupling 12 with the walking stick handlelO attached is then screwed onto the alarm housing 11 thus sealing in the gas cylinder alarm 19. The screw on coupling 12 can be screwed off when the gas cylinder alarm 19 requires to be changed or adjusted.
The gas cylinder alarm 19 consists of two parts, the gas canister with a pressure cap on top. when the pressure cap is pressed down it allows gas to escape through the pressure cap vent 20 at the same time emitting the alarm sound. For short bursts the pressure cap is pressed down lightly. For continuous alarm the pressure cap is pressed down firmly to 'lock on' and then released by easing the pressure cap upwards.
Referring to the drawings Design B comprises a walking stick with built in alarm system which is constructed of plastic and aluminium materials especially built to hold a battery alarm 27 which can be operated by means of a switch on the side of the battery alarm 27 which can be reached through the alarm switch aperture 25. The construction of the model Design B is as follows : A walking stick handle 10 is cut from the stem 13 and fitted into the screw on coupling 22 and secured by bolt 17 and nut 18 fastener.
The stem 13 is cut to the required length and a rubber or metal ferrule 14 is Emitted to the base. The top of the stem 13 is fitted into the narrow tube of the alarm housing 21 and secured by bolt 17 and nut 18 fastener.
The battery alarm 27 is placed into the alarm housing 21 with the alarm 28 in line with the sound vent aperture 26.
The alarm switch 29 will now be in line with the alarm switch aperture 25 and easily accessable for switching on and off. The battery alarm 27 is held in place to prevent moving by pegs.
The screw on coupling 22 with the walking stick handle 10 attached is screwed on to the alarm housing 21 thus sealing in the battery alarm 27. The screw on coupling 22 can be screwed off when the battery requires changing or the battery alarm 27 needs to be replaced or adjusted.
The alarm switch 29 operates by up and down movement by finger control through the alarm switch aperture 25.
