Abstract
An offset double adaptor for the recording industry which enables two audio signal processors to be connected to a single insert-point on an audio mixing desk. The additional socket could be used for computer controlled MIDImuting of MIDIfading. When either or both sockets are disconnected, the internal switching ensures that the signal path is maintained. <IMAGE>
Description
INSERT-POINT DOUBLER
for Audio Mixing desks
This invention relates to an Audio Insert-Point Doubler.
In the Professional Audio Industry, sound mixing desks are provided with a means of breaking into each audio signal path, in order to apply signal processing.
These interrupt points are called 'Break-Jacks' or'lnsert-Points', and are usually in the form of a stereo jack socket. One is provided for each signal path. They are normally permanently connected to the recording studio hardware via a wiring loom.
However, recent developments have made new devices available which require the use of these Insert Points, but users wish to retain the use of their existing equipment also.
This invention is a double adaptor which is specially wired to enable two sound processing devices to be quickly connected in series, where the original equipment only provided for one. It does so without disturbing the existing wiring loom. The adaptor has an offset stereo jack-plug at one end, and two stereo jack-sockets at the other. The sockets each incorporate a switch to short-out the signal send and return contacts while the socket is not in use, so as to complete the signal path at all times.
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows in side view, the insert-point doubler.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the insert-point in use.
Figure 3 shows in perspective the insert-point doubler.
Figure 4 shows the wiring diagram.
Figure 5 shows a typical mixing desk with all insert-points occupied, and
Figure 6 shows the same mixing desk with the insert-point doublers in place, and additional equipment connected.
Referring to the drawings, the insert point doubler (10) is a compact, offset, double adaptor with the two jack sockets (11) wired in series, both sockets incorporating a switch (13) to short out the send and return contacts (14 & 15) if no jack plug is inserted. The offset position of the jack plug (12) is to provide clearance for any adjacent items.
To use, the jack plug (16) is removed from the insert-point (17) at the rear of the sound mixing desk (18), plugged into one of the adaptor jack sockets (11), and the insert-point doubler is then plugged into the vacated insert point (17). There is now an extra insert point available (17) into which other equipment (19) can be plugged.
Claims (4)
1. An Audio Insert-Point Adaptor wherein two insert-points can be derived from one. The adaptor has an offset stereo jack-plug at one end, and two stereo jacksockets at the other. It is wired to enable two sound processing devices to be quickly connected in series, where the original equipment only provided for one. The sockets each incorporate a switch to short-out the send and return contacts while the socket is not in use, so as to complete the signal path at all times.
2. An Audio Insert-Point Adaptor as claimed in claim 1, wherein more than two insert points are provided.
3. An Audio Insert-Point Adaptor as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the input jack plug is connected to the sockets by a length of wire.
4. An Audio Insert-Point Adaptor as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3, wherein multiple adaptors are grouped together to form a bank of adaptors.
