Abstract

An overshoe for attachment to an article of footwear has a sole member (12) provided with a toe portion (14) shaped to receive the toe portion of a shoe, and a heel band (16) which engages around the heel of the shoe. Spikes (24) are provided on the undersurface of the sole member (12). The toe portion and heel band are conveniently connected by straps (18, 20) which enable the overshoe to be secured over a user's normal footwear. The sole and spikes are preferably integral and of a plastics material. This converts the user's normal footwear for use in playing golf. <IMAGE>

Description

GOLF OVERSHOE The present invention relates to a golf overshoe.
Most forms of golf equipment can be hired at golf clubs. Golf shoes are, however, one important exception. Most golf clubs do not allow players on the golf course without golf shoes and as a result casual players who would normally hire equipment are forced to buy golf shoes which are, by their nature, expensive items of equipment.
Some courses, notably municipal courses, do allow players on the course wearing ordinary shoes. However, these do have the considerable disadvantage that they do not provide proper grip and support whilst the player is actually making a stroke at a golf ball. It can also be extremely hazardous since, if the player slips whilst he is swinging the club, the ball can be hit wildly off line with consequent danger to other players and spectators on the course.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved golf overshoe.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an overshoe for attachment to an article of footwear, the overshoe comprising a sole member, means for securing said sole member to said article of footwear and spike means on a lower surface of said sole member.
In a preferred form of the invention the spike means are integral with said sole member, the sole member and spike means being conveniently injection moulded from plastics material.
The present invention is further described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first, preferred form of golf overshoe according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the overshoe of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an inverse plan view of the overshoe of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a second, preferred embodiment of golf overshoe according to the present invention; Figure 5 is a side elevation of the overshoe of Figure 4; and Figure 6 is an inverse plan view of the overshoe of Figure 4.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 to 3 these show a preferred form of golf overshoe 10 which is designed to slip on over a user's normal footwear. The overshoe has a sole member 12 which carries a toe portion 14 shaped for receiving the toe portion of a shoe, and a heel band 16, the latter being in the form of a raised wall or flange extending around the heel portion of the sole member 12.
The overshoe is retained in place on the wearer's normal shoe by a strap 18 which has a first portion 20 extending towards the heel of the overshoe from the toe portion 14 and a cross member 22 which extends from one end of the heel wall 16 to the other. The cross portion 22 is connected to the free end of the portion 20 either integrally or by passing through a slot or slots in the free end region of the strap portion 20.
The free ends of the cross piece 22 are detachably secured to the heel wall 16 by any suitable means such as a velcro (R.T.M.) or clip fastening.
The overshoe is conveniently injection moulded from plastics material and has integral spikes 24 moulded in its lower surface.
The overshoe can be produced in several sizes to fit varying sizes of footwear and, in use, is simply slipped over the user's shoe and fastened in position using the strap 18. The overshoe is a comfortable and convenient fit whilst providing a secure grip for the user.
The overshoe illustrated in Figures 4 to 6 is similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 3. However, instead of a toe portion 14 it is provided with further side walls 26,28 which, together with the heel wall 16 are suitably shaped or provided with ribs (not shown in the drawings) to engage over the sole of the user's normal shoe, thus retaining the overshoe in position. Alternatively or additionally, straps may be provided.
Although the heel band 16 is shown as a single flange extending fully around the heel portion, it may extend only part way around or may comprise a number of discrete bands or upstanding flanges.
