Abstract
The propeller has no central hub, so that the onset of cavitation is delayed. The blades 4 are joined to the supporting/ drive ring 6 by any suitable means. There may be any number of blades, and the assembly may be held in place by any means that are applicable. The blades must be of such a shape that lift forces are produced when the arrangement is rotated in direction 7 or 8. The propeller may be mounted on a ship (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
Description
PROPELLER TO DELAY THE ONSET OF CAVITATION
This invention is a propeller that is to propel a vehicle through a fluid or on the interface of two fluids.
Propellers are a common form of propelling a ship, submarine or some other vehicle such as a hovercraft.
Most propellers have the blades attached to a central hub which rotates and thus causes the blades to rotate. The shape of the blades causes a pressure difference on them, due to the rotation, and thus a force is developed on the blades. The propeller then moves in the direction of this force on the blades.
However, propellers that operate in water are prone to a phenomenon known as cavitation. This is a form of local boiling which reduces the efficiency of the propeller and can cause damage to the blades. This effect is strongly linked with the size of the joint of the blades and the hub.
According to the present invention there is a rigid ring onto which any type of lifting blade may be joined by any suitable means. The blades, of which there may be any number, must not touch one another at any point, except possibly at the intersection with the supporting ring.
The blades may overlap but the arrangement must have no central hub.
An example of the use of this invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 shows how such a propeller could be
installed
Figure 2 shows such a propeller in detail.
In the drawing it can be seen that the propeller is housed in a cowling 1 which is fixed to the hull 2 by struts 3.
It is possible that the drive for the propeller could be provided by a chain that is passed through a pair of the struts and onto the supporting ring.
The propeller is of a four blade type in which the blades 4, which are of any type that would provide lift when the supporting ring is rotated in the direction 7 or 8, are attached to the supporting ring 6. When the propeller is rotated in either of the aforementioned directions the hull will move due to the forces, (lift), generated on the blades.
Claims (3)
1. A propeller with no central hub comprising of a number of lifting blades joined to an outer ring.
2. A propeller with no central hub as claimed in Claim 1, with the blades joined to the outer ring by a means that allows the pitch of the blades to be altered.
3. A propeller with no central hub as claimed in Claim 1, with the blades joined to the outer ring by a means that does not allow the pitch of the blades to be altered.
