Abstract
A combination comprising a fixing member 1 and inserter is disclosed, the fixing 1 member being intended to be secured in a relatively inaccessible surface. The fixing member 1 comprises a shank 13 having at one end a pair of spaced collar portions 11, 12; the inserter comprising an elongate handle 2 having at one end a retaining portion 5 having a slot 8 for receiving the portion 14 of the fixing member 1 intermediate the spaced collars 11, 12. In use, the fixing member 1 is positioned in, and held by, the slotted retaining portion 5 such that the opposed end of the elongate handle 2 may be manipulated to insert the fixing member 1 in the desired surface. The intermediate portion 14 may have flats to abuttingly engage portions of the retaining portion 5 defining the slot 8. The fixing member 1 may include a hook portion 16 for suspending a body. The shank portion of member l may have a screw-thread or barbs. The handle 2 may be a wooden rod 3 or of plastics. <IMAGE>
Description
Fixing Member and Inserter
This invention relates to a combination of a fixing member and a device for insertion of, and subsequent removal, of the fixing member.
Devices for manipulation and insertion of conventional flat headed pins (e.g.
drawing pins) in place are known for example from U.K. patent specifications 2207077 and 2218027. Such devices function by positioning the substantially planar head of the drawing pin between a slot-formed by a cut-away section of a covering disc, and a supporting positioning portion. In use, once the pin is inserted, the supporting positioning portion is moved sideways relative to the pin causing the pin to move out of the cut-away portion of the covering disc. Removal of the pin may subsequently be achieved by reversing this procedure. One problem with such devices is that the pin cannot be inserted to its maximum extent (i.e. such that the planar head abuts the surface into which the pin is inserted) since this is prevented by the thickness of the covering disc during insertion.
I have now devised an improved combination of fixing member and insertion member, which comprises: (a) a fixing member comprising an elongate shank portion having proximate a
longitudinal end thereof a pair of longitudinally spaced collar portions; and (b) an elongate handle having proximate a longitudinal end thereof a retaining portion
defining a transversely extending slot said retaining portion and said slot being shaped
and dimensioned such that a said fixing member may be received intermediate said
pair of spaced collar portions.
In one embodiment, one of the pair of collar portions defines an end of the fixing member. Typically the other of the collar portions is in the form of a planar circular disc and spaced from the first mentioned collar portion by an interconnecting portion, which interconnecting portion is preferably of similar cross-sectional dimensions to the crosssectional dimensions elongate shank portion.
In an alternative embodiment the fixing member may be provided with a hook projection extending away from a collar portion in an opposed direction to the shank portion.
Typically, the shank portion is made of a metal, with one or other (or both) of the pair of collars being of metal or plastics.
In further alternative embodiments, the shank portion may be provided with engagement means arranged to more securely retain the fixing member in place. Typically the engagement means will be in the form of outwardly projecting barbs on the shank.
Alternatively the engagement means may be in the form of a screw thread provided on the shank portion. In these embodiments it is preferred that the interconnecting portion between the collar portions is provided with drive means, typically in the form of one or more flats which flats lie adjacent to or contiguous with respective portions of the slot. The fixing member may thereby be rotated on insertion (by means of rotating the handle about its longitudinal axis) such that the engagement means fixingly engages with the material in which the fixing member is being inserted.
It is preferred that the handle is an elongate rod of plastics or wood.
Typically, the arms defining the slot form part of an attachment to the handle and are typically of metal or plastics. Advantageously, the slot defined by the arms tapers from a relatively wide mouth portion to a relatively narrow apex portion.
The invention will now be further described in a specific embodiment by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fixing member and handle according to the invention;
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are end, side and plan elevations respectively of a part of the handle shown in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the fixing member and handle in use;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of fixing member according to the invention;
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view along A-A of alternative embodiments of fixing member; and
Figures 8 and 9 show alternative embodiments of parts of a fixing member according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus comprises a fixing member 1 in combination with a handle 2. The handle is in the form of an elongate wooden rod 3 having fastened at one end thereof the sleeve 4 of a retaining portion 5. The retaining portion 5 is provided with two metal arms 6, 7 extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the rod, the arms 6, 7 defining a slot 8 tapering from a relatively wide mouth portion 9 to a relatively narrow apex portion 10.
The fixing member comprises a pair of collars 11, 12 spaced by interconnecting portion 14, in the longitudinal direction of a shank portion 13 projecting a metal, such as brass.
In use, the fixing member is inserted into the retaining portion 5, with the interconnecting portion 14 entering the slot 8, and collars 11, 12 abutting respective upper and lower surfaces of the arms 6, 7 (as shown in- Figure 5).
The handle 2 may now be manipulated with the fixing member received in retaining portion 5 and the shank portion inserted into an otherwise inaccessible surface up to the depth of collar 12. The retaining portion 5 is then disengaged from the fixing member 1 by means of moving the retaining portion 5 in the opposite direction to the arrow in Figure 1.
When it is desired to remove the fixing member from the surface in which it is inserted, the procedure described above is simply reversed.
Referring to Figure 6, there is shown an alternative embodiment of a fixing member 1. In the embodiment shown, the collars 11, 12 are of injection moulded plastics, and an interconnecting plastic portion 15 is provided. Projecting from collar 12 is a hook portion 16 which in use may suspend a body from the fixing member. Referring to Figure 7, cross-sectional views of alternative interconnecting portions 15 are shown. Each portion 15 is provided with flats 17 arranged to engage with the downwardly extending portions of arms 6, 7 defining the slot 8 in the handle 2. When the handle is rotated about its longitudinal axis, the fixing member is thereby caused to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the shank portion 13, which is particularly useful where barbs 18 or a screw thread 19 is provided on the shank (see Figure 8).
The hook portion 16 shown in Figure 6 may be replaced with alternative end portions such as those shown in Figure 9.
Claims (13)
1. A combination comprising:
(a) a fixing member comprising an elongate shank portion having proximate a
longitudinal end thereof a pair of longitudinally spaced collar portions; and
(b) an elongate handle having proximate a longitudinal end thereof a retaining
portion defining a transversely extending slot said retaining portion and said
slot being shaped and dimensioned such that a said fixing member may be
received intermediate said pair of spaced collar portions.
2. A combination according to claim 1, wherein one of the collar portions comprises a
planar circular disc spaced from the other collar portion by means of an
interconnecting portion.
3. A combination according to claim 3, wherein said interconnecting portion is of
substantially the same cross-sectional dimensions as the cross-sectional dimensions of
said elongate shank portion.
4. A combination according to any preceding claim, wherein one of the pair of collar
portions defines an end of the fixing member.
5. A combination according to any preceding claim, wherein said fixing member is
provided with a hook projection.
6. A combination according to claim 5, wherein said hook projection extends away from
one of said collar portions in an opposed direction to said shank portion.
7. A combination according to any preceding claim, wherein said shank portion is
provided with engagement means arranged to more securely retain the fixing member
in place.
8. A combination according to claim 7, wherein said engagement means comprises
outwardly projecting barbs provided on said shank portion.
9. A combination according to claim 7, wherein said engagement means comprises a
screw thread provided on said shank portion.
10. A combination according to any preceding claim, wherein the interconnecting portion
between said collar portions is provided with drive means drivingly cooperable with
said slot of said retaining portion of said handle.
11. A combination according to claim 10, wherein said drive means comprises one or
more flats which in use are arranged to lie adjacent or contiguous with respective
portions of said slot provided on said retaining portion of said handle.
12. A combination according to any preceding claim, wherein said slot provided on said
retaining portion of said handle tapers from a relatively wide mouth portion to a
relatively narrow apex portion.
13. A combination substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying
drawings.
