Abstract

Beam assembly for a beam jack has a longitudinal recess, eg. a channel, in a central cross-member (1) or (1A) situated above the lifting means. It also has vehicle support arms (2) or (2A), which are retained by means of a longitudinal key and are extendible within the recess as far as stops will allow. Vehicle support blocks (3) may be placed astride the vehicle support arms (2) or (2A) in any position required. Where this beam assembly is fitted to a type of beam jack which requires stabilizing, then dampers, eg. shock absorbers, may be incorporated in the beam support assembly (not shown) or associated members (not shown). <IMAGE>

Description

BEAM ASSEMBLY FOR A BEAM JACK This invention relates to a Beam Assembly for a Beam Jack.
Beam Jacks are widely used in garages and M.O.T. stations over lifts and pits. However, certain types of Beam Jack, eg. Air Powered Beam Jacks, require a stronger and more suitable design.
According to the present invention, this Beam Assembly for a Beam Jack has a longitudinal recess, eg. a channel in a central crossmember, situated above the lifting means. It also has vehicle support arms which are extendible within the recess.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIGURE 1. Shows in perspective the Beam Assembly.
FIGURE 2. Shows in plan and cross-section examples of the central cross-member.
FIGURES 3 & 4.
Show in perspective and cross-section examples of the vehicle support arms.
EXAMPLE 1.
In the longitudinal recess in the central cross-member (1), a longitudinal key is permanently attached, which may be a 'T' section member (4). The vehicle support arms (2) are extendible when fitted within the recess and are retained by compatibly shaped apertures formed, eg. by lugs (5), which key into the 'T' section member (4). Stops are provided to prevent the arms extending beyond a limit.
Vehicle support blocks (3) are provided, which may be placed astride the vehicle support arms (2) or (2A) in any position required, owing to the upper surface of the vehicle support arms (2) or (2A) being at one level along their entire length. By this means the Beam Jack may support a vehicle when loaded.
EXAMPLE 2.
In the central cross-member (1A), grooves or channels (4A) are provided in the longitudinal internal sides of the recess. The vehicle support arms (2A) are extendible when fitted within the recess and are retained by compatibly shaped runners (6) which key into the grooves or channels (4A).
An opposite configuration may also apply where the grooves or channels (4A) are situated longitudinally in the vehicle support arms (2A) and the compatibly shaped runners (6) are fixed to the longitudinal sides of the recess in the central cross-member (1A).
A combination or any permutation of features in Example 1. or 2.
may also be possible, situated internally or externally to the longitudinal recess when forming a retaining key for the vehicle support arms (2) or (2A).
Where this Beam Assembly is fitted to a type of Beam Jack which requires stabilizing, eg. an air powered Beam Jack, then dampers, eg. shock absorbers, may be incorporated in the Beam Support Assembly (not shown) or associated members (not shown).
Dampers eg. shock absorbers may also be incorporated in the beam support assembly or associated members of any Beam Jack of any type which requires stabilizing.

Claims (5)

CLAIMS 1. A Beam Assembly for a Beam Jack comprising a central cross member with a longitudinal internal recess situated above the lifting means. It also has vehicle support arms which are extendible within the recess and are retained by means of a longitudinal key. Vehicle support blocks may be placed astride the vehicle support arms in any position required. Dampers, eg. shock absorbers, may or may not be incorporated in the Beam Support Assembly or associated members. Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS
1. A beam assembly for a beam jack comprising a central cross-member having a channel section defined by a base portion and sidewall portions, and a T-section member extending from the base portion so as to provide a longitudinally extending key member within the channel; the assembly further including a pair of vehicle support arms which are slidably engageable within the channel so as to be retractable and extendable; the arms having Tshaped longitudinal openings so that the T-section member engages therein to provide a longitudinal key.
2. A beam assembly according to claim 1 having stops to prevent the arms from extending beyond a predetermined extent.
3. A beam assembly substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
4. A beam jack comprising lifting means and a beam assembly according to any preceding claim mounted above the lifting means.
5. A beam jack according to claim 4 which is an air-powered beam jack.
