Abstract
A swimming aid consisting of a paddle 1 having a blade 2 at each end with a float 3 between the blades 2 to aid buoyancy. <IMAGE>
Description
SWIMMING AID
This invention concerns swimming aids, and in particular buoyant aids for assisting people to learn to swim.
There have been many proposals for aiding people to swim, these in general including one or more buoyant items which either form part of a garment worn by the swimmer or a float which the swimmer rests on or holds. Buoyant garments have the advantage that they are secured to the swimmer and are therefore not easily dropped. However, such garments are not necessarily secured to the most advantageous part of the swimmer's body, and they can be potentially dangerous for very young children if they slip out of position.
Hitherto proposed floats which are held by a swimmer are also unsatisfactory since they prevent use of the arms for propulsion. This is obviously a particular disadvantage for disabled swimmers if they have limited or no leg movement.
According to the present invention there is provided a swimming aid comprising a paddle having two blades and buoyant means between the two blades.
For the sake of safety, the blades are preferably flexible.
Curved blades are preferred as they can improve the efficiency of the swimming aid in propelling the user, the curve being in the same sense for the two blades. The paddle portion of the swimming aids of the present invention preferably has a hand grip between the buoyant means and each of the paddles. In order to reduce the risk of a swimmer accidentally loosing hold of the swimming aids, they preferably include means for attaching the aid to the wrist of the user.
An embodiment of swimming aid in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the swimming aid;
Fig. 2 shows a side view of the swimming aid of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 shows an end view of the swimming aid of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the swimming aid consists of an elongate paddle 1 having a blade 2 at each end. A float 3 is symmetrically disposed between the two blades 2 to provide the aid with buoyancy. Hand grips 4 are located between each of the blades 2, the grips 4 being profiled to improve the comfort of the user.
The blades 2 are flexible, for example being made of a plastics foam, and they are curved to improve the efficiency of paddling with the aid. The strength of the blades 2 is increased by a thickened periphery 5 and a central rib 6 with a thinner web 7 therebetween.
The float 3 can be made of any of a variety of materials, for example of a foamed plastics or a hollow water-tight body.
In general it is preferred to use a material which does not make the swimming aid unduly heavy when out of the water.
The aid preferably includes at least one strap for attaching it to the wrist of the user, such a strap not being shown in the drawings.
Particularly preferred swimming aids in accordance with the present invention have a central metal core which extends from one paddle 2 to the other through the hand grips 4 and the float 3, thereby providing the aids with structural strength.
Although swimming aids in accordance with the present invention are of particular value in assisting people to learn to swim, they can also be used by experienced swimmers.
Furthermore, swimming aids in accordance with the present invention are of especial value for disabled swimmers, for example those having limited or no leg movement.
Claims (6)
