Abstract
A door bin 10 comprises a base portion 16, an upper body portion 18, a cover portion 38, and a handle 14. The base portion 16 and upper body portion 18 are releasably held together by snap fasteners (60, Fig. 2) which can be released to allow the base portion to be extended downwards, whilst still joined to the upper body portion by a flexible portion (20, Fig. 3). The bin 10 is releasably attached to a vehicle door by butterfly clips 64 and has an aperture 46 in the cover portion to allow access to the bin when the cover portion 38 is closed. <IMAGE>
Description
A BIN FOR A VEHICLE INTERIOR
The present invention relates to bins used in vehicles for storage and in particular to vehicle door bins.
A known door bin comprises an open topped rigid container formed integrally with the inner side of a vehicle door.
The present invention provides a bin for a vehicle interior comprising a bin body, attaching means for releasably attaching the bin body to a vehicle interior, and carrying means to enable the bin body to be carried when it has been removed from the vehicle.
The present invention can therefore provide a bin for a vehicle interior which can be removed from the vehicle and used as a bag or carrying case.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly cut away, of a bin according to the invention attached to a vehicle door,
Figure la is an enlarged view of a clip for attaching the bin of Figure 1 to a vehicle door,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the bin of Figure 1 removed from the vehicle door, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bin of Figure 2 in an extended condition.
Referring to the drawings, a bin 10 comprises a bin body 12 and carrying means in the form of a handle 14 comprising a rigid rod. The bin body 12 comprises a base portion 16, an upper body portion 18, a flexible portion 20 joining the base and upper portions 16, 18 and a cover portion 22. The base portion 16 has a flat bottom 24 with two sides 26 and two upwardly extending ends 28. The upper body portion 18 comprises two sides 30, 31 and two ends 32 which are of substantially the same length as the sides 26 and ends 28 respectively of the base portion 16. The ends 32 of the upper body portion 18 are tapered near their upper ends and are formed at their upper ends with respective apertures 34 which receive respective ends of the handle 14.The side 30 which, in use in the vehicle, is at the rear of the bin 10, is substantially as high as the ends 32 and is attached to each of them along the whole of one side up to the handle 14. The other side 31 of the upper body portion 18 which, in use in the vehicle, is at the front of the bin 10, is not as high as the ends 32 and is attached to the ends 32 so as to leave an opening 36 between the front side 31 and the handle 14.
The base and upper portions 16, 18 and cover portion 22 are made of flexible material but are stiffer than the flexible portion 20.
The rear side 30 of the upper body portion 18 has two fixing apertures 52 therein (one only of which is shown in Fig.3) arranged one near each end. The apertures 52 enable the bin 10 to be releasably attached to a vehicle door.
The cover portion 22 is attached along two spaced apart regions 42 of the handle 14 such that it can be placed in a closed position in which it closes the opening 36 or folded back into an open position allowing access to the interior of the bin. Between the regions 42 an opening 46 is formed in the cover portion 22. The opening 46 allows access to the bin 10 when the cover portion 22 is in the closed position. A similar opening 50 is formed in the rear side 30 of the upper body portion 18 in the centre of its upper edge.
The flexible portion 20 of the bin body 12 comprises a sheet or strip of flexible material attached along one edge 54 to the base portion 16 and along the opposite edge 56 to the upper body portion 18. The flexible portion 20 allows the body 12 to be extended from a retracted form shown in Fig.2 to the extended form shown in Fig.3.
Several snap fasteners 58 are mounted with one half 58a of each fastener on the sides 26, 28 of the base portion 16 and the other half 58b on the sides 31, 32 of the upper body portion 18. The snap fasteners 58 form retaining means for releasably attaching the base portion 16 to the upper body portion 18.
Further snap fastener 60 are mounted with one half 60a of each fastener near the free edge 48 of the cover portion 22 and the other half 60b on the front side 31 of the upper body portion 18. The snap fastener halves 60a, 60b serve to fasten the cover portion 38 releasably in the closed position when the bin is in the extended condition. Further fastener halves 60c are mounted on the front edge 26 of the base portion. These can be engaged with the fastener halves 60a on the cover portion 38 to fasten the cover portion 22 releasably in the closed position when the bin body 12 is in the retracted condition.
A flexible strap 70 has a clip 72 at each end. Each clip 72 includes two flexible legs 74 each of which has a projection 76 thereon. A catch 78 is mounted on each end 32 of the upper body portion 18 and has slots 80 therein for releasably engaging the projections 76 of the clip 72.
In Figures 1 and 2 the bin is shown in its retracted position. The base portion 16 is attached to the upper body portion 18 by the snap fasteners 58, and the flexible portion 20 is folded inside the bin 10.
The bin 10 is releasably attached to a vehicle door 62 by butterfly clips 64 (Fig.la) which are mounted on the vehicle door. The clips 64 have a shank 66 which passes through one of the fixing apertures 52 and a head 68 which rotates to attach the bin releasably to the vehicle door 62.
When the bin 10 is removed from the vehicle door 62it can be used as a bag. The apertures 46 and 50 in the front and rear sides 31, 30 of the upper body portion 18 allow the bin to be held by the handle 14.
If a larger bag is required the first set of snap fasteners 58 can be released to detach the base portion 16 from the upper body portion 18 and the base portion and flexible portion 20 can be extended downwards.
It will be clear than many variations to the'above described embodiment are possible and are within the scope of the invention. Either or both sets of snap fasteners could be replaced by zip fasteners or velcro{R.T.M,) e
The material of which the bin is made can also be varied. One or more the base, upper and cover portions may be made of rigid plastics material.
Also the bin may be made of thermally insulating material to enable its use as a cool bag.
