Abstract

The invention provides a window or door system comprising an outer frame 5 capable of receiving outside fixed glazing components; and an inner frame 23 inserted, from the exterior of the system, into position in the outer frame 5 and fixed thereto by tongue 43 (or by screws), the inserted inner frame 23 being arranged to receive a glazing component 25 fitted from the inside of the system. Access to glazing components fitted in the inner frame is thus possible from the inside of the window system, rather than from the outside. The system is on the whole simpler to produce than conventional systems. The invention also provides a kit for use in the assembly of such a window or door system, and an outer frame for use as part of the system or the kit. <IMAGE>

Description

Window Glazing System This invention relates to a window glazing system, and is particularly applicable to multiple glazing systems. It is equally applicable to both window and door systems.
It is well known to provide fixed inserts, which carry the panes of glass, into fixed outer frames. However there is increasingly a demand for inside glazing of PVCU window systems. This demand arises from the need to give the impression of additional security. Outside glazing is potentially not very secure because it is easy to remove the external glazing bead and then remove the glass, thereby gaining entry. By contrast inside glazing results in the glazing bead being on the inside of the window system.
It is known to provide inside glazing by a complicated and time consuming procedure. This procedure includes the complex process of cutting, mitring, "V" sawing outer frame bars where transoms or mullions are located and also "V" sawing mullions and transoms where they fit to each other. The effect of this especially on thin outer frames is to weaken the bar during construction prior to welding and to make an insertion of steel reinforcement very difficult. With a window frame system involving a vent and a fixed insert, it is necessary to reverse the rebate of the outer frame to give an internal upstand where the open out vent occurs and an external upstand where the fixed glass is located to allow internal beading and glazing from inside. In the case of plastic window frames, the outer frame and the mullion transom outer frame joints have to be cleaned with a knife finish or a feature groove machine finish where the bars have been welded together. There is a resulting unsightly appearance and in the case of a wood grain finish the impression is of a frame which has been cut in two and rejoined. With feature grooving the continuity of the wood grain finish is clearly broken by the 4 mm wide x 2 mm deep groove machine made to remove the welding sprue.
By adopting the above described standard procedure for inside glazed PVCU window frames, designated machinery is required to produce the "V" saw cuts to connect the transom and mullion outer frame joints and reverse butt weld the outer frame.
According to the present invention there is provided a window system comprising an outer frame suitable for receiving outside fixed glazing components, the system further comprising an inner frame externally inserted into said outer frame and fixed thereto, said fixed insert being arranged to receive a glazing component fitted from the inside.
In practice the glazing components may be located in position after the inner frame has been inserted within the outer frame or the inner frame may be pre-glazed. In either case access to the glazing components is from the inside of the window system rather than from the outside.
Preferably the internal bead base of the inner frame is approximately level with the top of the fixed upstand of the outer frame.
The inner frame is firmly fixed to the outer frame by means of a locking arrangement provided by, for instance, a flexible tongue on the inner frame engaging with a rigid integral component of the outer frame when the inner frame is fixed in position.
Alternatively the inner frame can be screwed into the outer frame before the beads and glazing components are fixed in position.
The present invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 illustrates a conventional inside glazed window system; Figure 2 illustrates an inside glazed window system according to the present invention; Figure 3 illustrates a construction of a conventional inside glazed window system; Figure 4 illustrates the construction of an inside glazed window system in accordance with the present invention; Figure 5 shows detail of the fixed part of the window system of Figure 4; and Figure 6 shows detail of the vent part of the window system of Figure 4.
Referring to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, there is shown a conventional inside glazed window system having a welded construction. Figure 3 shows diagrammatically the method of construction of such a window system. The complexity of producing an inside glazed system by the convention method has been discussed above.
Figures 2 and 4 illustrate an inside glazed window system according to the present invention. As with a conventional system illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, this system has both a vent and a fixed window. As can be seen in Figure 4 the vent 1 is shaped such that the glazing can be carried out from the inside. In order to carry an espagnolet fitting in an enclosed and integral cavity (see below), the body of the "T" section frame of the vent has to be relatively thick. If a similar sized frame insert were used for the fixed window, the result would be unacceptable both from the point of view of appearance and also because of the configuration variations required in a range of different systems. By providing a fixed insert 3 with a relatively narrow frame section, an acceptable size of fixed insert is obtained. The width of the frame is in fact governed only by the ability to fit a standard double glazed unit over the top of the fixed outer frame.
The fixed insert may be fixed to the outer frame 5 by either a screw fixing illustrated at 7 or by providing a flexible tongue 9 on the fixed insert, which tongue engages with a rigid upstanding flange (not shown) forming part of the outer frame 5.
Referring to Figure 5, fixed outer frame 5 is formed from PVCU material and has an inner upstand 21. Fixed insert 23 carries a sealed double glazed unit 25 including glass panes 27 spacer 29 and a glass packer block 31. Glazing gasket 33 is located on the inside of outer upstand 35 and lies between the outer glass panes 27 and upstand 35. The double glazed unit 25 is held in position by means of removable co-extruded bead 37, located on the inside of the unit and having shaped leg 39 which engages within recessed portion 41 of the insert 23.
Insert 23 is provided with an integral flexible lug or tongue 43 extending downwardly and forwardly (to the outside of the system). When the insert 23 is inserted within outer frame 5, this tongue 43 rides over upstanding flange 45 of frame 5 and snaps into position in the position shown in Figure 5, thereby locking the insert 23 into engagement with frame 5.
Insert 23 is provided with a co-extruded seal 47 which engages with the inner surface of upstand 21 of outer frame 5.
As can be seen in Figure 5 the bead line 51 is approximately level with the top of the fixed upstand 21 of outer frame 5. The fixed insert 23 is thereby kept as low as possible while still allowing reglazing or glazing from the inside.
Arrows 53 and 55 indicate the direction of drainage -f water from the double glazing unit.
Referring to Figure 6, sash or vent 1 is shown located in position within outer frame 5. Vent 1 includes a PVCU inner frame 61 which carries the sealed double glazed unit 63, similar to that described above with reference to Figure 5. Unit 63 is held between glazing gasket 65 and co-extruded bead 67 located on the inside of the unit. Frame 61 also carries an espagnolet fitting having handle 67 and an espagnolet mechanism including cam 69, this mechanism being located within the inner upstand 71 of the inner frame 61.
The above described glazing system in accordance with the present invention allows a manufacturer to produce inside glazed systems without modifying his existing production method for constructing the fixed outer frame transoms or mullions. As a result there is significant financial saving and production integration is ensured. Furthermore there are minimal software alterations necessary to produce such a system since essentially the software required is the same as that for an outside glazed system.
The fixed insert can be fitted into different sizes of outer frame including very slim outer frames which would not be suitable for use in inner glazing systems according to the conventional designs.
