Abstract
A mould filling apparatus, particularly for filling lollipop moulds, in which moulds (12) are mounted in one or more trays (2, 4) removably supported by a frame (6). The tray or trays are arranged to be tilted from a level position to a tilted position where liquid in the moulds can flow freely out of the moulds into the tray or trays from whence the liquid may be drained by suitable means (32). A means (30, 36) for filling the moulds is provided. The tilting action ensures all moulds are equally filled. <IMAGE>
Description
MOULD FILLING APPARATUS
The present invention relates to a mould filling apparatus particularly but not specifically for filling moulds with a sucrous liquid for subsequent freezing to make lollipops.
Lollipops are usually made by an apparatus which fills a number of moulds with sucrous liquid by means of movable jets which are arranged to move over a rack of moulds.
The supply for the jets is timed so that each mould receives the correct amount of liquid in turn. A problem with this apparatus is that because of the large molecular size of the sucrous liquid the jets tend to be blocked or become restricted so that either a mould is not filled or else the mould is insufficiently filled. As a result the operative frequently resorts to having to hand fill the moulds from a bucket.
According to the present invention a mould filling apparatus comprises a plurality of moulds mounted in a liquid holding tray, a frame to support the tray so that the tray can be removed from the apparatus frame being arranged to be tilted from a position where the tray is level to a tilted position where liquid in the moulds flows freely out of the tray, means to freely fill the moulds in the tray and means to drain the tray when tilted.
By freely filling the moulds with more liquid than is required and then tilting the moulds in the tray the filling means can be supplied directly from a pump without jets. The tilting action ensures all moulds are equally filled.
Preferably the frame is pivotally mounted and tilted by means of an actuator controlled by a first timer so that it tilts after a predetermined time after a first pump supplying the filling means is switched on. The provision of the first timer avoids the necessity for level detection means.
A second timer may be provided to control the length of time the frame is tilted and the length of time a second pump arranged to drain the tray is switched on.
A pair of trays may be provided on a single frame and the filling means and draining means are then arranged to change from one tray to the other. This can be by a simple manual means.
Preferably the actuator is pnuematically powered with an adjustable changeover switch actuated by the tilt of the frame. Adjustment of the changeover switch can vary the angle of tilt.
A microswitch can be provided to switch off the drain pump when the frame is returned to a level position after tilting.
A bypass switch may be provided to ensure the drain pump can be powered if the timers fail.
Levelling means can be provided on the base of the apparatus of the invention.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mould filling apparatus of the invention.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic side view of the mould filling apparatus of Fig. 1, and
Figure 3 is a circuit diagram of the electrical power.
The filling apparatus comprises two stainless steel travs 2 and 4 which are mounted side by side on a frame 6.
Each tray has a liquid tight surrounding wall 8 and can be independently removed by handles 10 from the frame 6.
Moulds 12 with upwardly facing open mouths 14 are fitting into the bottoms of the trays.
The frame 6 is mounted with roller bearings 18 for tilting on brackets 20 secure to main frame or base 22.
The frame 6 is arranged to tilt between a level position where an adjustable microswitch 24 is switched on and a tilted position where an adjustable stop 26 actuates a pneumatic changeover switch 28. The angle of tilt is normally 45 but can be adjusted to about 48 which reduces the volume of liquid in the moulds.
A filling pump 30 and drain pump 32 are provided in base 22 and are connected to a reservoir 34 which may be outside the apparatus. The filling pump 30 is arranged to pump liquid from reservoir 34 to filling nozzle 36 which can be swivelled to fill tray 2 or tray 4. Filling pump 30 is started by starter button 38 connected through a first timer 40 and first starter relay 42 (see Fig. 3).
After a predetermined time pump 30 is switched off and drain pump 322 is switched on by second timer 44 and second starter relay 46. At the same time solenoid 48 is opened and an air supply 50 is opened through line 52 via adjuster valve 54 to the bottom of actuator cylinder 56.
adjuster valve 54 to the bottom of actuator cylinder 56.
Cylinder 56 then raises one end of frame 6 to tilt it about axis 58 until stop 26 hits changeover valve 28.
The second timer switchesd solenoid valve 48 off. The air supply is then switched to line 50 through adjuster valve 62 directly from line 63 and frame 6 is returned to the level until microswitch 24 switches off the pump 32 and ensures solenoid valve 48 is also off.
The level of base 22 is adjusted by foot stop 65.
The power supplies to the pumps are three phase via residual current circuit breakers 66 and control supplies are reduced to 24 volts by means of transformer 68.
A bypass switch 70 enables power to be switched direct to drain pump 32 in the event that the timers fail.
