Abstract
224,976. Mansbridge, G. F. Aug. 27, 1923. Inductances.-In a variometer the elements are wound so as to have low distributed capacity and are mounted on discs capable of rotation relative to one another about a common axis passing through the centre of the discs. The elements may be of single layer spaced coils or basket coils or multilayer low-capacity coils of known type. In one form, the stator comprises a pair of opposite wound kidney-shaped coils c, d, Fig. 1, mounted in a recess in an ebonite disc a provided with legs a<1>, Fig. 5. The outer end of the coil c is connected to the inner end of the coil d and the other ends are connected to terminals on the lower side of the disc a. The rotor comprises a similar and similarly connected pair of coils mounted in a, recessed disc b, provided with a central hollow plug g mounted in a bush a<2> in the disc a. The plug g has a threaded end on which is mounted a nut g<2> to keep the discs in engagement. The plug is insulated from the coils by a sleeve g<1>. The rotor windings are connected by flexible leads passing through the plug g to terminals on the stator. Strips of metal are provided for connecting the latter terminals with those connected to the stator windings so that the windings are in series or parallel. A rod b<4> provided with a knob b<3> is secured to the plug g. Rotation is limited by an upstanding lip a<3> in the upper edge of the disc a, taking into a recess b<1> extending partly around the lower edge of the disc b. A pointer h secured to the disc a registers with a bevelled dial b<2> vulcanized or otherwise secured to the disc b. Cores of powdered iron obtained chemically or electrolytically may be inserted in the spaces l and a part or the whole of the mechanical supports may be made of this material. Each pair of coils may alternately be D-shaped or circular. The coils may be wound in sections and means provided for cutting one or more sections out of circuit.
