Abstract
The suspension method of earthquake resistant buildings envisages the construction of a tapered rigid framed tower and the main building structure forming the core of it, with sufficient clearance at base and sides for movement during earthquakes. The main building structure is suspended at the top from the outer casing tower by means of post tensioned cables going through the base and sides of the main building and through the columns of the casing tower to the base where they are connected to the Hydraulic Jacking System. The foundation of the casing tower is resting on sandwiched base pads using 'Neoprene' or 'Hydraulic Shock Absorbing Pins'. <IMAGE>
Description
EARTH QUAKE RESISTANT BUILDINGS DESIGN (SUSPENSION METHOD)
The system consists of suspending the whole building structure from the top of rigid braced and framed tower so that the main building forms a core of the tower, leaving clearance at bottom and around sides.
The suspension is achieved by a number of post tensioned cables and suspension pivots, going around the main building and the tower, which are finally hooked to the hydraulic jacking system provided at the base. (See enclosed diagram).
The casing tower is wider at base tapering to the top, having buttress type fins, braced horizontally and diagonally at regular intervals as per design.
The foundation of the system is resting on concrete sandwich pads, the sandwiching layer being of either 'Neoprene' or 'Hydraulic shock absorbing pins'.
The base shear force induced by the earthquake is partially absorbed by the sandwich layer and the remaining energy is absorbed at the pivots.
When the tower deflects due to the ground motion the core building oscillates like pendulum bob but is brought to rest due to inertia of heavy mass.
This system ensures virtually no damage to the core building even during severest earthquake.
Claims (5)
1. Suspending the main structure of building forming core of rigid supporting tower structure by means of post tensioned cables.
2. The tower structure is wider at base and narrower at the top making it a tapered structure and allowing sufficient clearance around main building structure for movements during an earthquake.
3. The post tensioned cables are connected to the removable type Hydraulic Jacking System to provide the required tension.
4. In case of irregularity of mass distribution of main building, the tension in the cables is adjusted to maintain equal clearance around the building.
5. Anchorage is provided to the cable ends to retain the tension in
the cables as claimed in Claims 3 and 4, within the required
limits, due to creep and other losses.
5. Anchorage is provided to the cable ends to retain the tension within required limits due to creep and other losses.
AMENDMENTS TO THE CLAIMS HAVE BEEN FILED AS FOLLOWS.
1. Suspending the main structure of building forming core of rigid
supporting tower structure by means of post tensioned cables.
2. The tower structure as claimed in Claim 1, is wider at base and
narrower at the top making it a tapered structure and allowing
sufficient clearance around main building structure for
movements during an earthquake.
3. The post tensioned cables as claimed in Claim 1 are connected to
the removable type Hydraulic Jacking System to provide the
required tension.
4. In case of irregularity of mass distribution of main building as
cs
claimed in Claim 1, the tension in the cablesAadjusted to
maintain equal clearance around the building by the Hydraulic
Jacking System as claimed in Claim 3.
