Abstract

A device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper or paint has a steam inlet 1 and a steam outlet 3 adjacent a tip of a scraper 4 comprising a plurality of resilient fingers provided to accommodate unevenness in a surface 5 of the wallpaper and/or wall. A shroud 6 surrounds the steam outlet 3 and scraper 4 and forms with the surface 5 a steam chamber 7 to provide a working area for the steam jet. <IMAGE>

Description

DEVICE FOR FACILITATING REMOVAL OF WALLPAPER, PAINT OR THE LIKE This invention relates to a device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper, paint or the like.
A known device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper employs steam which is applied to the wallpaper surface to cause the wallpaper backing to melt and/or become sufficiently dampened to release the wallpaper from the wall so that it can be removed by a separate scraper.
This of necessity requires two separate operations and it is an object of the present invention to overcome that drawback.
According to the present invention, there is provided a device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper, paint or the like comprising a scraper incorporating an outlet for steam arranged for the steam to be directed to the vicinity of a tip of the scraper.
The scraper may be in the form of a flat plate with a straight scraping edge onto which steam may be directed from the outlet in the form of a jet. A shield may be provided in the region of this working area in order to contain the steam produced at the jet to work over an area of the wallpaper or paint on a wall in advance of the scraper. The shield also acts to protect the user of the device from steam and any dropping hot water.
The tip of the scraper may comprise a plurality of resilient fingers provided to accommodate any unevenness in the wallpaper and/or wall.
The device may be provided with one or more wheels at a location remote from the scraper, the wheels being located to run on the wall/wallpaper surface to facilitate guiding of the device. A handle or handle grips can be provided.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of a device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic side view of the device shown in Figure 1, with the addition of a shield.
The device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper or paint shown in the drawing is intended to be connected to a supply of steam (not shown) via a steam inlet tube 1.
Instead, the device may incorporate its own steam generator (not shown).
The steam exits through a steam outlet 3, which lies adjacent a tip of a flat scraper 4. As shown, the scraper 4 is made up of a plurality of resilient fingers 4A which are provided to accommodate unevenness in the surface 5 of the wallpaper and/or wall. The scraper 4 can be interchanged with another form of scraper. A shroud 6 is provided which surrounds the steam outlet 3 and scraper 4 and forms, with the surface 5 a steam chamber 7 which provides a sufficient area for the active steam jet to work on the wallpaper or paint prior to being scraped for removal.
The tube 1 passes through a main body portion 8 which is so shaped to be able to be gripped by one or both hands to work the device. A pair of wheels 9 is provided on the body portion 8 remote from the working (scraper) end of the device.
A pair of stays 10 is provided, which stays connect and hold the shroud 6 to the main body portion 8. The stays 10 are flexible to allow movement so that the shroud 6 can be held on the wall during work. A shield 11 is provided to protect the user from steam blow-back and any hot water droplets.
In use, with steam issuing from the outlet 3, the device is applied to the surface 5 and, once the steam has had a chance to allow the wallpaper or paint to loosen, the scraper 4 is moved back and forth over the wallpaper or paint, which is easily removed and will fall away in pieces by the effect of the steam in the chamber 7. It is expected that the present device will make the task of removing wallpaper and paint several times faster than achieved by prior art devices, even when the wallpaper itself has been painted.

Claims (8)

CLAIMS:
1. A device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper, paint or the like comprising a scraper incorporating an outlet for steam arranged for the steam to be directed to the vicinity of a tip of the scraper.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein said scraper is in the form of a flat plate with a straight scraping edge onto which steam may be directed from said outlet in the form of a jet.
3. A device according to claim 2, wherein a shield is provided in order to contain the steam produced at the jet to work over an area of the wallpaper or paint on a wall in advance of the scraper.
4. A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tip of the scraper comprises a plurality of resilient fingers provided to accommodate any unevenness in the wallpaper and/or wall.
5. A device according to any one of the preceding claims and comprising one or more wheels provided at a location remote from the scraper, the wheels being located to run on the wall/wallpaper surface to facilitate guiding of the device.
6. A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a handle or handle grips is/are provided.
7. A device according to any one of the preceding claims and comprising a shroud surrounding said outlet to form, with a surface to be worked upon by the device, a steam chamber for the steam to work on the wallpaper or paint prior to being scraped for removal.
8. A device for facilitating the removal of wallpaper, paint or the like, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
