Abstract

A cupboard has a one piece moulded plastics liner (10) which provides a bottom (15), side (13), back (16) and top (14) wall with a doorway opening (17). The side walls of the liner include substrates (e.g. of wood, chipboard or other particle board) moulded therein to provide both structural strength and a fixing for attachment of support fittings and the like. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CUPBOARD CONSTRUCTIONS This invention relates to cupboard constructions and in particular to cupboard constructions as described and illustrated in our U.K. Patent Application No. 9012299.5.

In our U.K. Patent Application No. 9012299.5 we describe-and illustrate cupboard constructions in which a one piece moulded plastics liner provide a bottom, side, back and top walls and a doorway opening together with a support structure to receive and support the liner including spaced upright members between which the liner engages and to which the side walls of the liner are secured to support the liner in situ.

In accordance with the present invention, the support walls are formed integrally with the side walls of the moulded plastics liner. More specifically each wall of the moulded plastics liner may have a substrate moulded into the wall to provide both structural strength and a fixing for attachment of support fittings and the like.

Preferably the substrate comprises wood, chipboard or other particle board to faciliate securing of attachments to the walls of the liner.

The liner may be supported on a structural base or by adjustable supporting legs with a plinth between the bottom wall of the liner and the floor.

The following is a description of a specific embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an elevation view of a cupboard in accordance with the invention mounted under a worktop; Figure 2 is a section on the line II-II on Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line III-III on Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a blown-up view of detail 4 on Figure 3.

The drawings show a cupboard unit indicated generally 10 mounted beneath a worktop 11 with a plinth 12 covering the gap between the bottom of the cupboard and the floor.

The cupboard has side walls 13, a top wall 14, a bottom wall 15, a back wall 16 and an open front 17 to receive a conventional hinged cupboard door.

The walls of the cupboard are of composite construction comprising a substrate of chipboard embodied in a resin/plastics moulding to create plastics internal and external surfaces reinforced by glass fibre mat or other strengthening membrane and the chipboard to provide a fully self-supporting structure unit. The unit may be supported by a structural base or on adjustable supporting legs to which the plinth 12 may be secured in a conventional manner.

As illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, the composite form of the side walls provides a convenient fixing for hinge plate 19 using screws 20 screwed through the outer plastic layer of the side wall into the underlying substrate and for other fixtures and fittings as required.

Claims (4)

CLAIMS:

1. A one piece moulded plastics liner for a cupboard unit providing bottom, side, back and top walls and a doorway opening, wherein the side wall of the liner each have a substrate moulded into the wall to provide both structural strength and a fixing for attachment of support fittings or the like.

2. A liner as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises wood, chipboard or other particle board to facilitate securing of attachments to the wall of the liner.

3. A liner as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 supported on a structural base or on adjustable support legs with a plinth between the bottom wall of the liner and the floor.

4. A one piece moulded plastics liner for a cupboard substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
