Abstract
A nut (or bolt head) has a handle (2) pivotally connected to the nut for movement about an axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the nut. The handle (2) is formed of rod material and its ends engage in recesses in the nut; alternatively, the handle (2) is pivoted on lugs (5) projecting from the nut. <IMAGE>
Description
Screw Nuts
This invention is concerned with improvements in and relating to screw nuts for screwing onto, and securing, threaded bolts, studs and the like.
Basically, a screw nut in accordance with the invention comprises a nut body having an internally screw-threaded hole therein and a handle pivotally connected to the body for movement about an axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the internally threaded hole.
In order that the invention may be well understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of one embodiment of screw nut in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view (with the handle in a different position) of the nut shown in Figure 1;
Figures 3 and 4 are side views (at right angles to each other) of another embodiment of nut in accordance with the invention;
Figure 5 is a plan view (with the handle in a different position) of the nut shown in Figures 3 and 4; and
Figure 6 is a plan view of another embodiment not in accordance with the invention.
As shown in each of the drawings, a nut in accordance with the invention comprises a nut body 1 having pivotally connected thereto a handle 2, and having formed therein (see Figures 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6) an internally screw threaded hole 3.
The nut body may be of any desired external cross-section, e.g. hexagonal (as shown in Figure 2 and 6) or circular (as shown in Fig. 5). In the embodiment of nut shown in Figures 1 and 2, the handle 2 is formed of rod and pivotal connection of the handle to the nut body is effected by engagement of two free ends of the handle in diametrically opposed recesses 4 formed in nut body 1. In the embodiment shown in Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6, the handle is pivotally connected to lugs 5 extending outwardly from the nut body 1.
When the handle 2 is, as shown in Figures, 2, 5 and 6, generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the internal threaded hole 3, it may serve as a lever or spanner for tightening or untightening the nut. When the nut has been appropriately tighened or untightened, the handle may be allowed to assume any desired position and, may, of course, serve as means of attachment of other objects or things to the nut or to the construction to which the nut is fastened.
The principle of having a pivotally mounted handle may also be applied to a bolt having a screw-threaded shank and thus a modification of the invention provides a belt having an at least partially externally screw-threaded shank and a head, the head being provided with a handle pivotally mounted on the head for pivotal movement about an axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shank.
A side view of a bolt in accordance with the invention is shown in Figure 7 of the drawings and comprises a bolt head 6 integral with a threaded shank 7, a handle 2 being pivotally connected to head 6 in a manner similar to that employed in the screw nut illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Claims (6)
1. A screw nut comprising a nut body having an interally threaded hole therein and a handle pivotally connected to the body for movement about an axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the internally threaded hole.
2. A screw nut ae claimed in claim 1 in which the handle is formed of rod material and pivotal connection is effected by pivotal engagement of ends of the handle with diametrically opposed recesses in the nut body.
3. A nut as claimed in claim 1 in which the handle is pivotally connected to lugs outwardly extending from the nut body.
4. A screw nut as claimed in claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. 1-6 of the accompanying accompany drawings.
5. A modification of the fastening element claimed in claim 1 which is a bolt having a head and an at least partially screw threaded shank, the head having a handle pivotally connected thereto movement about an axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the threaded shank.
6. A bolt as claimed in claim 5 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 7 of the drawings.
