Abstract

A covering 110 is suspended from an upper pole 116 by a series of rings 132. The covering is also suspended from a lower pole 118 by a further series of rings 132. The lower pole 118 can be raised from the position shown by releasing two cords 138 and 114 and pulling the cords downwardly thereby causing the pole 118 to be raised. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO DECORATIVE COVERINGS.
The present invention relates to a decorative covering and a method of suspending a decorative covering.
According to one aspect of the present invention a decorative covering is arranged to be suspended from two spaced elongate locations.
The locations may be spaced laterally or vertically from each other or both. The covering may include at least one and preferably two pleated sections. The pleated section or sections may be arranged to extend along the region or regions from where the covering is arranged to be suspended.
A ruffled section may be included on the covering arranged to extend between the locations from where the covering is arranged to be suspended.
At least one of the suspensions of the covering may be arranged to be comprised by a hook and loop arrangement. Alternatively or additionally at least one of the suspensions may be comprised by connection members extending at least partially around an elongate member.
The covering may be comprised of an integral piece of material or of pieces of material connected to each other, for instance by sewing.
At least one of the spaced elongate locations may be movable relative to the other. When one of the locations is spaced vertically from the other, the lower of the locations may be movable upwardly towards, or downwardly away from the other. At least one of the locations from which the covering is arranged to be suspended may be arranged to be movable relative to the other by means remote from the locations, for instance by means of flexible members.
The covering may be arranged to be capable of substantially covering a window, when the covering is located in the region of a window.
The present invention also includes a covering as herein referred to when suspended from two elongate spaced locations.
The covering may be arranged to extend over a lintel and may be arranged to extend over the indoors region of a window lintel. Alternatively or additionally the covering may be arranged to extend over a window.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a method of operating a decorative covering suspended from two spaced locations comprises moving at least one of the spaced locations relative to the other location. The method may comprise moving one of the locations in order to vary the extent to which a window located adjacent to but behind the covering is visible from in front of the covering.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a method of suspending a decorative covering comprises suspending the covering from two spaced elongate locations. The method may comprise suspending the covering in the upper region of a window and, alternatively or additionally, in the intermediate region of a window.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways, but two embodiments will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a first embodiment of part of a covering 10 mounted over a lintel 12, and Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a second embodiment.
The covering 10 in Figure 1 is located on the indoors side of a window 14. The covering is suspended from two rows of connection strips 16 and 18, with the upper inner strip 16 being located on the inwardly facing surface 20 of the lintel 12 and the outer lower strip 18 being located on the upper rail 22 of the window frame.
The covering 10 presents, to the interior of a room, an upper pleated section 24 extending along and over the upper strip 16 and a corresponding pleated section 26 extending along and over the lower strip 18. The pleated sections 24 and 26 are connected by a suspended ruffle section 28 which hangs down slightly from its spaced points of connection to the pleated sections. The ruffle section may be sewn to both the pleated sections.
The connection strips 16 and 18 may comprise a series of loops 30 into which a series of hooks 32 extend to fix the covering to the lintel and the rail. Any other form of suitable connection may be used.
In Figure 2, like parts to those in Figure 1 have been given the same reference number prefixed by the numeral 1.
As shown in Figure 2, the covering 110 is suspended from an upper pole 116 by a series of rings 132 which surround the pole and from a lower pole 118 by a further series of rings 132. The upper pole 116 is located on the inwardly facing surface 120 of a lintel 112 and the outer lower pole 118 is located adjacent to the window 114.
In the position shown, the suspended ruffle section 128 extends downwardly from the upper pole and, at its lower end, folds back upwardly and outwardly to the lower pole 118. A pleated section 126 extends downwardly from the lower pole and, behind that section 126, a drop 134 extends downwardly to the window sill 136.
The lower pole 118 is suspended at either end from two cords 138 and 140 which extend downwardly from spaced hooks 142 and 144 respectively. The cord 138 extends across the upper rail 122 of the window frame before passing through the hook 144 at the other side of the rail 122, and both cords 138 and 140 extend downwardly and are secured to a pleat fastener 146 on the side of the window alcove.
The pole 118 can be raised from the position shown to the upper rail 122 or any position therebetween by releasing the cords 138 and 140 from the fastener and pulling the cords downwardly thereby raising each side of the lower pole 118. The cords can then be secured to the fastener again when the pole is in the required position in order to leave the required area of the window visible from inside the room. The pole 118 can be lowered again to the required position by reversing the above sequence, with gravity allowing the pole to fall. Alternatively a positive drive cord system (not shown) can be provided to pull the lower pole downwardly, if required.
If desired, intermediate suspension arrangements can be provided for the lower pole between its ends.
Either of the coverings 10 or 110 may be of material other than described above, and may, for instance, be of net curtain material.
