Description
UNDER-ARM ACCESSORY FOR GARMENTS
This invention relates to an under-arm accessory for garments.
Hitherto, certain garments have incorporated a flap of an impervious material and arranged to protect an under-arm portion of the garment from moisture excreted from under-arm pores. Such flaps were located in the garment by means of stitch-tacking or press-studs and normally had to be removed, cleaned and washed separate from the garment, and re-sewn or re-fitted. The benefit of such flaps was thus offset by the additional laundering required. The advent of anti-perspirants has made these protective flaps virtually unnecessary and they are now little used.
I have found that anti-perspirants are not an entirely satisfactory substitute for the known protective flaps; and I have observed that anti-perspirants themselves can cause staining.
An object of the present invention is to provide an under-arm accessory for garments whereby the shortcomings above described are obviated or mitigated.
According to the present invention, there is provided an under-arm accessory for a garment, comprising a flap of a flexible sheet material, an absorbent material on one side of the flap for receiving moisture and/or preparations applied under-arm, and an adhesive panel affixed to the surface of the other side of the flap for locating the flap in contact with a garment.
Preferably, the flap comprises two flap portions one for engaging inside the body of a garment the other for engaging inside the sleeve of a garment.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an under-arm accessory in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line II-II in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the under-arm accessory consists of two flaps 10, 11 each made of an impervious (to moisture) flexible sheet material, for example polythene or other plastics sheet material, and mutually interconnected at a seam along a re-entrant edge portion 12 dimensioned to be consistent with the curvature of an arm hole in a garment. Thus, one of the flaps 10, 11 can engage inside the body of a garment and the other flap can engage inside the sleeve.
The outer side of each flap 10, 11 is coated or lined with an absorbent material 13 which may be a foamed plastics material or a layer of fabric for example cotton.
The inner side of each flap 10, 11 carries an adhesive panel 14 provided with a peel-off covering. The adhesive of the panel 14, at least on the surface thereof remote from the flap 10, 11 is preferably of the "easy-peel" or "removable" type.
In use, the accessory is placed to engage inside a sleeve and adjacent body portion of a garment (one accessory to each side of the garment) and the accessory is held in place by means of the adhesive panels 14 from which the peel-off covering is removed and discarded.
After the garment has been used, and prior to washing or cleaning, the accessories are removed and discarded or disposed of.
Modifications of the accessory described above, within the scope of the appended claims, include using alternative Zlsingle-use materials; for example each flap may be of paper-like material. Also, the absorbent coatings or linings may be impregnated with deodorant preparations.
For sleeveless garments, the accessory may consist of a single flap.
Claims (5)

An under-arm accessory for a garment, comprising a flap of a flexible sheet material, an absorbent material on one side of the flap for receiving moisture and/or preparations applied under-arm, and an adhesive panel affixed to the surface of the other side of the flap for locating the flap in contact with a garment.
2. An accessory as claimed in claim 1, wherein the flap comprises two flap portions one for engaging inside the body of a garment the other for engaging inside the sleeve of a garment.
3. An accessory as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the or each flap is of an impervious material.
4. An accessory as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the or each flap is of a paper-like material.
5. An under-arm accessory for a garment, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
