Abstract
A pre-formed roof comprises a moulded glass fibre roof section 1. A glass fibre interior ceiling 4 attaches to the base of the roof section 1. Wooden blocks 5 are moulded into the ceiling 4 and allow the roof to be mounted on a structure such as a porch 6. A layer of insulating material 11 is included in the space between the ceiling 4 and the roof section 1. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Moulded roof
This invention relates to roofs especially but not exclusivelyforouthouses such as porches and the like.
Previouslywhen people have added porches or small extensions on to a building the walls reformed by standard pre-fabricated sections butthe roofs have had to be built up from timberjoists, sheets and the like. This requires a certan degree of skill and is time consuming thus making it difficult for an unskilled person to build such an extension. Standard door and window units are available which make it simple to form a basic shell for an outhouse but it has still been necessary to fabricate a roof for the structure.
it is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a rooffor use on buildings and outhouses and which is pre-moulded from a plastics material.
Preferably, the plastics material is glass fibre bonded with a resin.
Preferably, there is included a flashing on an edge of the roof which provides a seal between the roof and a wall to which it is abutted.
Preferably also, the edges of the roof not abutting a wall are pre-moulded so as to form a drainage channel for rainwater.
Preferably also, the roof has an internal ceiling which has wooden battens moulded therein and to which fixing means may be attached for mounting the roof on a structure.
Preferably also,the internal ceiling is spaced apart from the roof and the space between them is filled with an insulating material.
Embodiments ofthe present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. lisa plan view of one embodiment of a moulded roof in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a porch showing the roof of Fig. 1 in use;
Fig. 3 is a part cut away sectional side view ofthe roof of Fig. 1 showing the manner in which it is mounted to a structure;
Fig. 4 is a part cut away perspective view of a porch showing a second embodimentofa roof in accordancewith the ppresentinvention; Fig. 5 is a part cut away sectional side view of the roof of Fig. 4 showing the manner in which it is mounted to a structure; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view showing two examples of the roof of Fig. 4 in position against a building.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1,2 and 3, a roof comprises a moulded glass fibre roof section 1 having a gutter 2 and a flashing 3. A glass fibre interior ceiling 4 attaches to the base of the roof section 1. Wooden blocks 5 are moulded into the ceiling 4. These blocks 5 may be either moulded into the ceiling 4 during manufacture orfixed to it when the roof is assembled.
In use, the roof is mounted on top of a structure such as a porch 6. Screwnails 7 are then driven through the topmost wooden battens 8 of the porch 6. Further screwnails 7 serve to fix the flashing 3 to a wall 10. A layer of sealing compound 9 is used to seal the joint between the ceiling 4and the battens 8.
In the alternative embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5 a layer of insulating material 11 is included in the space between the ceiling 4 and the roof section 1. The roof is also formed without an external rain gutter. The sides of the roof 12 extend above the level ofthe roof section 1 and are joined to it by an inwardly sloping surface 13. The roof is arranged so that rainwater gathers atthefront edge and is guided away by a drainpipe 14.
Fig. 6 shows howthe roof can be designed to join a wall either along two edges, type A, or along one edge, type B.
The roofs may be manufactured in a number of sizes to suit standard door and window units. These come in 1210 and 1810 mmwidths andthe roofs can be sized to suit porches made with combinations of these units and 80 mm corner posts. By adding pigments to the glass fibre the roofs may be manufactured in a range of colours thus further simplifying their use by cutting outthe need for painting.
Further refinements may be included in the roofs such as, for example, the provision of a fitmentfor an electric light. This can be provided by running a conduitforcarrying a power cable through the inside ofthe rooffrom a hole in the flashing to a hole in the centre of the ceiling of the roof where a lightfitment may be mounted.
The use of the roof need not be limited to porches and house extensions but may also be used on bay windows and on small sheds and the like.
Modifications and improvements may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
1. A pre-formed roof for use on buildings, outhouses and the like comprising a roof member preformed from a plastics material.
2. A roof as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the plastics material is glass fibre bonded with a resin.
3. A roof as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein aflashing is provided on an edge of the roofwhich in use provides a seal between the roof and a wall to which it is abutted.
4. A roof as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the free edges of the roofare pre-moulded so as to form a drainage channel for rainwater.
5. A roof as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein there is provided an internal ceiling having wooden battens moulded therein to which fixing means may be attached for mounting the roof on a structure.
6. Aroof as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the internal ceiling is spaced apart from the roof member and the space between them is filled with an insulating material.
