Description

SPECIFICATION Louvre and mullion system This invention relates to a louvre and mullion system comprising a louvre, a mullion and a clip suitable for attaching the louvre to the mullion. The invention also relates to such a clip itself.
It is known to support wall and ventilation louvres on one or more upright mullions by providing a portion of each louvre which abuts the mullion with a flat face and screwing the mullion to the louvre by means of, for example, self-tapping screws. Such an arrangement tends to be costly both from the point of view of money and from the point of view of time because screw holes have to be formed in the louvre and the mullion at some stage in their manufacture and a workman must expend the time in screwing the louvre to the mullion during assembly of the system on site, after having carefully aligned the components.
It is not in practice possible for the louvre merely to rest against the mullion, or at least against a saw-toothed support of such a mullion as, in ventilation applications, some force will tend to be exerted on the louvre because of air currents.
In addition to the expense, the conventional screw fittings suffer from the disadvantage that they do not allow for ready adjustability and for linear expansion of the louvres unless elongate holes, in proper alignment, are provided in each mullion. In addition, the use of screws can be unsightly on such louvres which, although primarily serving a functional purpose may also be fashioned or decorated to be in keeping with their environment as the louvres may be used as a decorative cladding to complete areas of a building.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a louvre and mullion system comprising a louvre, a mullion and a clip suitable for attaching the louvre to the mullion, the louvre and the mullion each having a respective lip which lies adjacent the other, the louvre having a flange which extends from the lip away from the mullion and in a direction along the length of the mullion and the clip comprising a first clip portion adapted to bear on a surface of the mullion the other side of the mullion's lip from the louvre, a second clip portion extending across the two lips and a third clip portion which grips the flange thereby to attach the louvre to the mullion.
It will be appreciated that the invention allows ready installation of louvres on mullions and the clip can be formed in such a way as to allow the louvre to move transversely with respect to the mullion so as to cater for thermal expansion or contraction.
The flange preferably comprises a first flange portion extending away from the mullion and a second flange portion extending away from the first flange portion in a direction along the length of the mullion. Thus, the angle between the first flange portion and the second flange portion may be 90 and, in a particularly preferred embodiment, the first flange portion is perpendicular to the length of the mullion and the second flange portion is parallel with the length of the mullion.
The first flange portion may be reinforced so that the flange has added strength and a free edge of the flange, remote from the lip, may also be reinforced and may also be chamfered for ease of installation.
The system may comprise one or more sawtooth louvre supports which either may be fixed to or integral with the louvre or may be fixed to or integral with the mullion.
The clip may be made at least partially of resilient material, such as spring stainless steel, which may be in a variety of gauges but which typically can be of about 0.7 mm gauge. By means of a construction of this nature, the first clip portion can be resiliently biased against the said surface of the mullion.
The first clip portion may have a free edge extending away from the mullion so that the clip can easily be removed for disassembly of the louvre and mullion system. Instead or in addition, the clip may have an opening for a tool for installation and/or removal.
In a preferred embodiment, the third clip portion has a first part extending in a direction along the length of the mullion and a second part extending from the first part towards the mullion. With such an arrangement, the second clip portion may be substantially at right angles, or slightly less than right angles, to the first clip portion, the first part of the third clip portion may be substantially at right angles to the second clip portion and the second part of the third part of the third clip portion may be substantially at right angles to the first part of the third clip portion.
It is preferred that the clip fit closely the said surface of the mullion, the two lips and the flange. In any case, it is desirable that the angles between adjoining portions of the clip when the system is not assembled be slightly less than the corresponding angles of the louvre and mullion.
The system may comprise at least two mullions and at least two louvres and each may be formed of pressed, rolled or extruded aluminium or pressed or rolled steel, for example. Ventilation louvre extrusions are preferably formed of at least 1 mm gauge aluminium, preferably greater than 1.5 mm and particularly greater than 1.8 mm gauge aluminium. It will be appreciated that the mullions can be formed out of pressed metal and that an opening, providing the mullions' lip, can be punched in the metal at the same stage of manufacture. By means of the present inven tion, no apertures need be formed through the louvre.
According a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a louvre and mullion system comprising a louvre, a mullion and a clip suitable for attaching the louvre to the mullion, the louvre and the mullion each having a respective lip which lies adjacent the other, the mullion's lip being provided by an opening in the mullion, the louvre having a flange comprising a first flange portion extending from the lip of the louvre substantially perpendicularly to the length of the mullion and a second flange portion extending from the first flange portion in a direction along the length of the mullion and the clip comprising a first clip portion adapted to bear on a surface of the mullion the other side of the mullion's lip from the louvre, a second clip portion substantially at right angles to the first clip portion and extending across the lips and the first flange portion and a third clip portion having two parts, the first part being substantially at right angles to the second clip portion and extending across the second flange portion and the second part being substantially at right angles to the first part and extending towards the mullion, the third clip portion gripping a free edge of the flange thereby to attach the louvre to the mullion.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a clip suitable for attaching a louvre to a mullion, the louvre and the mullion each having a respective lip which, when the louvre is attached to the mullion, lies adjacent the other, the louvre having a flange which extends from the lip away from the mullion and in a direction along the length of the mullion, which clip comprises a first clip portion adapted to bear as a face of the mullion the other side of the mullion's lip from the louvre, a second clip portion extending across the two lips and a third clip portion which grips the flange thereby to attach the louvre to the mullion.
It will be appreciated that the present invention enables unsightly screws to be disposed of. A stainless steel clip may be made to match aluminium louvres, which can be surface treated to from example, bronze and black colours, by "ionic plating", a process which in itself is known and which causes the surface of the metal to undergo a chemical reaction.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be put into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a louvre and mullion system in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows a sectional view taken along the line Il-Il of Fig. 1; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a second embodiment of a clip in accordance with the invention; and Figure 4 shows a part-sectional view of a further embodiment in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, there can be seen in Fig. 1 a louvre and mullion system 1 comprising a pair of mullions 3 and 5 formed of strips of pressed aluminium or steel. Extending one from each mullion is a respective saw-toothed louvre support 7 or 9, which are spaced to support a louvre. A louvre 11 is seen supported by saw-toothed louvre supports on the mullions 3 and 5.
Each mullion 3 or 5 has a respective rearwardly extending member 4 or 6 extending rearwardly from one edge to give the structure comprising a mullion 3, a rearwardly extending member 4 and a saw-toothed louvre support 7 a generally Z-like configuration. From the back edge of each rearwardly extending member 4 or 6 extends a respective support flange 4a or 6a by means of which the mullions 3 and 5 can effectively be secured in their site location.
The louvre 11 comprises an inclined blade 13 extending from the mullions 3 and 5 and an upright portion 15 attached to the inclined blade and abutting the mullions 15. The top of the upright portion 15 forms a lip which lies adjacent a lip of the mullion 3 formed by an opening 17 in the mullion 3. The mullion 5 is similarly equipped with such an opening positioned in the same manner. Extending from the lip of the louvre 11 at the uppermost edge of the upright portion 15 is a first flange portion 19, which extends at right angles away from the mullions 3 and 5. The underneath surface of the first flange portion 19 is integrally provided with a reinforcement 21 for added strength.
The reinforcement 21 is flanked on the one side by a narrow slot 20 adjacent the upright portion 15 for receiving flashing at joins between louvres abutting end to end and a rounded slot 22 for accepting self tapping screws in certain applications.
A second flange portion 23 extends down from the first flange portion so as to be generally parallel to the mullions 3 and 5. The lower edge of the second flange portion is also provided with a reinforcement 25, but it can be seen that this reinforcement is chamfered.
At the other end of the inclined blade 13 of the louvre from the upright portion 15 is a generally similar construction. The louvre blade has in fact a horizontal rotational axis of 2-fold symmetry running parallel along a midline of the inclined blade 13, to the plane shared by the mullions 3 and 5. By this arrangement, the end of the louvre 11 distant from the mullions 3 and 5 can engage underneath saw-toothed louvre supports so that the louvre 11 does not lift from the supports when installed. It should be noted that upper and lower edges of each saw-toothed louvre support 7 are inclined to one another so that each saw-toothed louvre support 7 is in wedge-fitting engagement with the end of each louvre 11 distant from the mullions 3 and 5.
A clip 27 for attaching the louvre 11 to the mullion 3 can be seen in section in Fig. 2.
The clip is formed of a 2.5 cm wide single piece of 0.7 mm gauge spring stainless steel and comprises a first clip portion 29 which bears against a back surface of the mullion 3, that it is to say on a surface of the mullion which is the other side of the mullion's lip from the louvre 11. Extending across the lips of the mullion 3 and the louvre 11 is a second clip portion 31 substantially at right angles to the first clip portion 29. This lies across and bears on the first flange portion 19 of the louvre 11. A third clip portion 33a and 33b extends from the second clip portion and comprises two parts. The first part 33a of the third clip portion extends at right angles to the second clip portion down across the second flange portion 23. The second part 33b extends at right angles to the first part 33a back towards the mullion 3.Thus the third clip portion 33a and 33b grips the second flange portion 23 thereby holding the louvre to the mullion.
When installing the clip 27, it can be seen from the ghosted lines in Fig. 2 that the clip can be installed from the front of the louvre and mullion system, that is to say from the side of the louvre. The second part 33b of the third clip portion is hooked under the second flange portion 23 and a first clip portion 29 is then inserted through the hole 17 and serves as a lever for the clip 27 to be rotated into position.
Removal of the clip 27 is effected by prising the first clip portion 29 up away from the mullion 3 by gripping an outwardly extending free edge 35 provided at the bottom of the first clip portion 29.
Fig. 3 shows a clip 127 which is a second embodiment of a clip of the present invention.
It is generally similar to the clip described above with reference to Fig. 2 but comprises, on the second clip portion 131 a rectangular punched opening 132 for a tool, such as a screwdriver, for installation of the clip 131 and/or removal of the clip 131 from a louvre and mullion system.
Fig. 4 shows part of a mullion 203, part of a louvre 211 and a clip 227 which together form a further embodiment of the system of the present invention. The louvre 211 comprises an inclined blade 213 and an upright portion 215, the top of which forms a lip adjacent a lip formed in the mullion 203. The louvre in this embodiment comprises a curved first flange portion 219 extending outwardly from the upright portion and a curved second flange portion 223, formed as a continuation of the first flange portion 219, extending generally downwardly from the first flange portion 219.
The clip 227 is shaped generally to correspond with the profile presented by these parts of the mullion and the lip and comprises first, second and third clip portions equivalent to the portions described with reference to Fig. 2. Thus a first clip portion 229 bears against a back surface of the mullion 203, a curved second clip portion 231 extends across the lips formed by the mullion 203 and the louvre 211 and a curved third clip portion 233 grips the second flange portion 223 of the louvre wil to hold the louvre 211 to the mullion 203.
It will be understood that the mullions can take any form in their construction as long as they are provided with at least one appropriate lip; they may be therefore part of a boxlike construction to give the system added strength.
