Abstract

At least one cylindrical recess (10) with an internal thread is formed in the head (6) of a golf club and at last one balancing disk (4) with an external thread threadably engages the cylindrical recess. Preferably, several spaced recesses (10) are provided in order that the centre of gravity of the club head can be shifted in two mutually perpendicular directions and at the same time the weight balance of the club can be adjusted. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Golf club The present invention relates to a golf club.

The ball trajectory is an important element in golfing and it is a well-known fact that the ball's trajectory depends on the skill of a golfer. The location of the center of gravity in the club head itself is an equally important element, but modification of a commercially obtainable club to relocate the center of gravity would mean breaking it to pieces and reassembling the pieces, which would be next to impossible for laymen.

Japanese Utility Model Publication SHO-53 No. 291 proposes a golf club designed such that the base of the club head has a hole bore therein; lead particles are introduced into the hole; and the center of gravity can thus be relocated depending on the quantity of lead particles introduced into the hole. However, this has the drawback that whilst it may be possible to change the weight balance of the whole golf club, it cannot freely shift the center of gravity in the club head itself.

The invention provides a golf club in which at least one cylindrical recess with an internal thread is formed in the head of the club and a balancing disk with an external thread of the same pitch as said internal thread threadably engages the cylindrical recess.

Preferred and/or optional features of the invention are set forth in claims 2-5.

It is thus possible to provide a golf club in which the center of gravity in the club head itself can be shifted vertically and horizontally, while at the same time the weight balance of the whole club can be adjusted.

The invention will now be more particulariy described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a part sectional view showing one embodiment of the head of a golf club according to the present invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view showing balancing discs used in the golf club of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings, the golf club head 6 shown therein is in the form commonly known as a "wood" and has three holes bored therein, which holes extend through the sole plate 7 (base of the club head) and well into the body of the head. The holes are spaced apart between the heel 8 and toe 9 of the club head. A disk-housing tube 5 with internal female thread 10 is fitted into each of the three holes; and two balancing disks 4 engage the cylindrical recess of each disk-housing tube. Removable threaded end caps 1, 2 and 3 close off the lower ends of the tubes 5.

As described above, the disk-housing tubes are fitted into holes bored in the club head base. The hole or holes could be bored in the top or side of the club head 6, but the base is the best location for aesthetic reasons. Moreover, it is technically difficult to bore a number of holes in the side of the club head.

Figure 2 illustrates two different balancing disks 4, 4' which can be used. The disks are cylindrical with external male threads 11, 11'. A cruciform hole 12 (in disk 4) or a hexagonal hole 1 3 (in disk 4') is formed in the center of the disk surface. When the disk height in Figure 2 is H, a weight difference can be provided by setting H, 2H and 3H and this will help the balance adjustment.

Any number (including one) of cylindrical recesses and any number of disks could be used, but a plurality of cylindrical recesses would be necessary for the purpose of freely shifting the center of gravity both in vertical direction and in horizontal direction; and aiso a plurality of disks would be desirable for the purpose of making a subtle adjustment of the balance.

A layman can easily make a subtle adjustment to the center of gravity in the club head itself using an appropriate tool.

Claims

1. A golf club in which at least one cylindrical recess with an internal thread is formed in the head of the club and a balancing disk with an external thread of the same pitch as said internal thread threadedly engages the cylindrical recess.

2. The golf club of claim 1, wherein said cylindrical recess is formed by boring a cylindrical hole in the club head and fitting a disk-housing tube with internal thread into said hole.

3. The golf club of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said cylindrical recess is formed in the base of the club head.

4. The golf club of anyone of claims 1-3, wherein a plurality of said cylindrical recesses are provided.

5. The golf club of anyone of claims 1-4, wherein a plurality of balancing disks engage said recesses.

6. The golf club of anyone of claim 1-5, wherein each cylnidrical recess is provided with a removable end cap.

7. A golf club substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing.
