Abstract

A ladder attachment device comprises a double hook (16, 18, 20), a stabiliser (22) and a projecting arm (10) which terminates in a coiled section (12) for location of a paint kettle handle and a paint brush. The attachment can be used on either side of the ladder. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Ladder attachment device This invention relates to a ladder attachment device for the support of articles such as paint kettles, buckets and the like, in a position readily accessible to a user standing on the ladders.
The object of the invention is to provide a ladder attachment device which can be readily located in position at either side of the ladder.
According to the present invention there is provided a ladder attachment device comprising a hook portion for cooperation with a ladder rung, an arm extending laterally of the hook portion so as to project laterally from the ladder when the hook portion is hooked over a ladder rung and a stabilizer portion spaced laterally from the hook portion by a bridging piece so that the device can be located with the hook and stabilizer portions flanking oppositely directed lateral surfaces of a ladder stile and with the bridging piece bearing against a forwardly directed surface of the stile, the hook portion being provided with a pair of oppositely directed hook members whereby the device can be attached at each side of the ladder with said bridging piece bearing against the forwardly directed surface of the respective stile in each case.
Preferably said arm is provided with a formation for location of a handle of a paint kettle or bucket and conveniently said formation is of such a configuration that it can engage a paint brush handle and retain the paint brush above the paint kettle or the like.
In a preferred embodiment, said formation is of generally helical configuration located with its axis generally parallel to the arm and comprising more than one convolution so that a paint kettle handle may be lodged in one convolution and the paint brush handle in an adjacent convolution.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, the sole figure of which is a perspective view showing the device in its position of use.
As shown, the ladder attachment device comprises an arm 10 which terminates at one end in a pigtail formation 1 2 comprising two (or possibly more) helical convolutions. At its other end, the arm 10 is integral with a hook portion 14 comprising a stem 1 6 which is generally perpendicular to the arm 10 and oppositely directed hook fingers 18, 20 which lie in a plane generally perpendicular to the arm 10. Intermediate the pigtail formation 1 2 and the hook portion 14, the arm is provided with a stabilizer portion 22 which extends generally perpendicularly to the arm and is spaced laterally from the hook portion 14 by a bridging piece 24 which forms part of the arm.
The lateral spacing between the hook por tion 14 and stabilizer portion 22 is slightly greater than the width of the stiles of the ladder the device it is to be used with. If desired, the stabilizer portion 22, instead of being fixed, may be movable along the arm towards and away from the hook portion to accommodate stiles at different widths. In this event, the arrangement will be such that the stabilizer portion 22 is retained in an adjusted position either by friction or some form of retaining means.
In use, the device is attached to a ladder by hooking one of the fingers (18 as illustrated) over a ladder rung 26 and positioning the device so that the hook and stabilizer portions are located either side of one of the ladder stiles 28 and so that the bridging piece 24 bears against the forwardly directed surface 29 of the stile (i.e. that surface which faces the user when the ladders are in use). When so assembled, the arm 10 projects laterally of the ladder and a paint kettle 30 can be suspended by lodging its handle 32 in one of the pigtail convolutions. A paint brush 34 may also be supported and retained by the pigtail formation 1 2 in the manner shown so that the waist of the brush handle is lodged within the convolution, thereby locating the brush directly above the paint kettle.
It will be noted that the device is generally symmetrical with respect to a plane containing the axes of the arm 10 and the stem 1 6 thus enabling the device to be used at either side of the ladder by turning the device in a generally horizontal plane through 180 and engaging it with the other stile and one of the rungs. In both positions of use, it will be noted that the bridging piece 24 will bear against the forwardly directed surface 29 of the respective stile.

2. A device as claimed in Claim 1 in which said arm is provided with a formation for location of a handle of a paint kettle or bucket.
