Abstract
The device comprises a panel 2 of a self-skinning synthetic plastics material on a supporting member 6, the panel 2 including an area 6A devoid of the supporting member and containing one or more bands or strips 10, 12, 14, 16 of reduced thickness relative to the remainder of the structure. The band(s) or strip(s) may be opened or slit to permit insertion of one or more cables, the cable(s) being retained in position by the resilience of the structure lying on either side thereof. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Cable holding device
This invention relates to cable holding devices.
According to the present invention, there is provided a cable holding device comprising a structure of a self-skinning synthetic plastics material on a supporting member, said structure including an area devoid of said supporting member and containing one or more bands or strips of reduced thickness relative to the remainder of the structure, whereby said band(s) or strip(s) may be opened or slit to permit insertion of one or more cables, the cable(s) being retained in position by the structure lying on either side thereof.
Preferably, said self-skinning synthetic plastics material will be self-skinning polyurethane.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which:~
Figure 1 is a front view of a device embodying the invention: and
Figure 2 is a plan view on Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the device consists of a panel 2 comprising a moulded self-skinning polyurethane foam structure 4 having a metal or other material backing member 6.
As will be seen from Figure 1 , the backing member 6 is recessed at the position indicated by reference numeral 6A so that at the position of the recess, the structure consists only of the moulded self-skinning polyurethane foam. In the area of foam only, the foam is moulded to provide bands or strips 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 which, as will be seen from Figure 2, are of reduced thickness compared to all other parts of the foam structure. Such bands or strips are formed integrally during the moulding process of the foam.
By slitting the bands or strips in their longitudinal directions, adjacent portions of the moulding may be separated to form fingers between which a cable (not shown) may be inserted-in the longitudinal direction of the bands or strips-such that the cable will be held by the fingers lying on either side of the now-slit band or strip. Due to the inherent nature of the self-skinning polyurethane foam, the fingers will close around the inserted cable such that no unsightly gaps are present between the cable and the fingers.
Cables may be inserted into each of the slit bands or strips, or a plurality of cables may be inserted into each slit band or strip.
Whilst the invention has been described with reference to a panel in which the bands or strips are located at an edge thereof, it will be appreciated that the strips or bands could be formed inboard of the edges of the panel. In such a case, slitting of the bands or strips could take place from either side of the panel, the cable or cables being threaded through the slit band(s) or strip(s) so as to enable the cable(s) to pass from one side of the panel to the other.
A panel according to the invention may be included as a part of furniture-see for example our copending patent application No.
where a cable passage facility is required. Or the panel may form part of other structures or surfaces where a cable or cables is to have access to and/or from said structures and surfaces.
