Abstract
A waste disposal device for crushing waste material to flush through a drain line has a casing 2 defining the wall of a cylindrical crushing chamber 8 with its axis vertical. A stationary cutter 36 is fixed to the wall of the crushing chamber. Within the crushing chamber is coaxially located a rotor 10 including a disc 28 and radial blades 30. Each of the blades, at the outer end, has a cutting edge which, when the rotor rotates, passes very close to the cutting edge of the stationary cutter. The rotor disc defines the bottom of the crushing chamber. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Waste disposal device
This invention relates to a waste disposal device for crushing waste material to flush into a drainpipe.
There have been known several types of waste disposal devices. The basic concept of a waste disposal device is to shred and grind up waste material into particles so that it can be flushed into the drainpipe with water. However, today's waste disposal devices have a difficulty to run when fibrous material or those containing fibrillose substance such as rags, clothe, onion skins and celery are put into it. Therefore, one has to separate disposable materials from undisposable materials before using the device.
Accordingly, the object of the invention is to provide a waste disposal device available for a variety of waste materials including fibrous waste such as rags.
According to this invention there is provided a waste disposal device comprising a casing defining a wall of e.g. a cylindrical crushing chamber with its axis vertical, a stationary cutter fixed to the wall of said crushing chamber, a rotor coaxially located within said crushing chamber, said rotor comprising a disc and radial blades provided thereon, an outer end of each of said blades having a cutting edge which, when said rotor rotates, passes very closely to the cutting edge of said stationary cutter, said disc defining a bottom of said crushing chamber, a motor for driving said rotor, and means for supplying water into said chamber.
When fed into the crushing chamber, the waste material turns together with the running motor while being flung outwardly by centrifugal force. The cutting edges of the rotor blades and of the stationary cutter, when they meet, produce scissors action by which the waste material, even fibrous material, is cut into small pieces.
The rotor blades preferably slant in the direction of rotation of the rotor to securely catch the waste material. Besides, this allows the cutting edge of each rotor blade to progressively meet that of the stationary cutter, thus distributing the power load required.
In the preferred embodiment, the wall of the crushing chamber has parallel vertical grooves, which communicate at the lower ends with the exterior of the crushing chamber. The grooves prevent water from circulating along the wail of the crushing chamber and make downward flow of the water by which the waste material in small pieces is flushed away.
The grooves can form sharp teeth, each between two adjacent grooves, on the wall of the crushing chamber. The teeth improve the crushing ability, since the waste material of soft kind is crushed when it strikes against these teeth.
This invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation, partially in section, of a waste disposal device according to this invention; and
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line ll-ll of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a waste disposal device for use in ships. The device includes a cylindrical upper casing 2 vertically mounted on a funnel-shaped lower casing 4 having arms 6 bolted to a base (not shown). The upper casing 2 defines a cylindrical crushing chamber 8 in which a rotor 10 is coaxially located, while the lower casing 4 defines a discharge chamber 12 communicating with a drain
Fine 14.
The rotor 10 is secured to the upper portion of a vertical shaft 16, which is rotatably and sealingly mounted in a sleeve 18 integral with the lower casing 4. The shaft 16, at the lower part, is connected by belts 20 to a driving shaft 22 of an electric motor 24. The motor 24 is secured to a bracket 26 at the side of the lower casing 4.
The rotor 10 includes a circular disc 28 by which the cushing chamber 8 and the discharge chamber 12 are separated. The circular disc 28 may be provided with a plurality of small holes (not shown) through which the small pieces of waste material fall. On the disc 28, the rotor 10 has a plurality of blades 30 which radially extend from a hub 32 and slant in the direction of rotation of the rotor 10 (in the counterclockwise direction in Figure 2) at an angle of o to vertical.
Each of the rotor blades 30 has a cutting edge 34 at the outer end. On the other side, the inner circumference of the upper casing 2 is spacedly provided with a plurality of stationary cutters 36 so that the cutting edges 34 of the rotor blades 30, when the rotor 10 rotates, pass very close to the cutting edges 38 of the stationary cutter 36. For example, the clearance between the cutting edges 34 and 38 is 0.5 mm.
Preferably, the rotor blades 30 and the stationary cutters 36 are different in number in order to distribute the power load required.
The inner circumference of the upper casing 2 has parallel vertical grooves 40 which communicate at the lower ends with the discharge chamber 12.
These grooves 40 form sharp teeth 42, each between two adjacent grooves, on the inner circumference of the upper casing 2.
On the upper casing 2 is mounted a hopper 44 having an opening 46 at the top and a water supplying means or water nozzle 48 at the inside from which flushing water is supplied into the crushing chamber.
In operation, the waste material, when fed through the opening 46 of the hopper 44, falls into the crushing chamber 8 together with the flushing water from the water nozzle 48. This waste material is caught by and turns together with the rotor 10 driven by the motor 24 while being flung outwardly under the action of centrifugal force. Then, the waste is cut into pieces by a scissors action produced when the cutting edges 34 and 38 of the rotor blades 30 and the stationary cutters 36 meet. At the same time, the waste material of soft kind such as food waste will break into pieces when it strikes against the rotor blades 30 or teeth 42.
After being cut into pieces in this manner, the waste material together with the flushing water flows down the grooves 40 into the discharge chamber 12 and is flushed out the drain line 14.
