Description
SPECIFICATION
Price ticket display stands
This invention relates to price ticket display stands, particularly for use in retain outlets, and is especially, but not exclusively, related to such stands incorporating self-coiling rolls upon which are printed price indicia or other display material and which can be adjusted to present desired price information.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided a price ticket display stand comprising a generally planar base and a stem which is hinged to the base such that, in a nonerected condition of the stand, the base and stem lie in a generally common plane and, in an erected condition of the stand, wherein the stem has been hingedly pivoted with respect to the base, the stem upstands from the base in a generally upright position, and, associated with the stem and base, adjacent the hinge, respective cooperating means for maintaining the stem in the generally upright position.
Preferably, the hinge arrangement between the stem and base comprises a weakened line joining the two components, whereby the stand can be moulded as a one piece unit. However, any other suitable form of hinge may be used, in which case, the stem and base may be preformed separately.
Also, such cooperating means may consist of respective snap-fitting elements on the stem and base adjacent the hinge therebetween.
Alternatively, the stand may be erected for permanent use with the stem in the upright position, in which case, the stem can be adhesively secured to the base adjacent the hinge.
The stem can include a display area in which price indicia and/or other information may be provided. For instance, price indicia may be printed upon at least one self-coiling roll mounted upon the display area of the stem, whereby the price of a particular product, with which the display stand is associated, can be altered as and when necessary. Additionally, the stem may be in two parts of which one is hinged to the base and which can be detachably secured together, with the other part incorporating the display area.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, there is provided a price ticket display stand comprising a generally planar display area, means for securing the stand to a support or for rendering the stand free-standing and, associated with the display area, a plurality of self-coiling rolls which bear display information, are mounted in side-by-side relationship and are adjustable for displaying desired price information.
Preferably, said securing means enables the stand to be detachably mounted upon the front edge of a shelf. In such a case, the stand can be provided with an indicating arrow for indicating whether the price and other relevant information upon the stand relates to the goods either on or below the shelf upon which the stand is mounted.
Alternatively, the stand may be provided with a detachable foot for enabling it to be free-standing upon a shelf or other support.

Figs. 36 and 37 are respective side elevational and rear perspective views of the stand shown in
Figs. 33 to 35.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1 of the drawings, a first embodiment of price ticket display stand 1 comprises a generally planar base 2, with a raised portion 3 to which is hingedly attached, at 5, a generally planar stem 4. The stand 1 is moulded as a one piece unit from any suitable plastics material, whereby the hinge 5 is in the form of a weakened line of such material.
The stem 4 consists of two portions, nameiy, a lower portion 6 and an upper portion 7. Adjacent the hinge 5, there are provided, on the lower stem portion 6 and on the raised portion 3 of the base 2, respective cooperating means which can maintain the stand 1 in its erected condition, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Such means are indicated generally at 8.
The second embodiment of stand 1', shown in
Fig. 2, is identical to that shown in Fig. 1, except that a more specific form of snap-fit, cooperating means is used. Said means comprises a pair of generally rectangularly-cross-sectioned protrusions 8' which can be snap-fitted into correspondingly-shaped apertures in the confronting face (not shown) of the raised portion 3.
Alternatively, the mating faces of the bottom end of the lower stem portion 6 and the raised portion 3 of the base 2 may be adhesively secured together with the stand 1 or 1' in its erected condition, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Mounted on the upper stem portion 7 are three self-coiling rolls 9 each marked with price digits, for example, from Op to 9p, with or without weight designations, such that the indicated price can be adjusted as and when necessary.
The required price is displayed through a window 1 0 provided in the front face of the upper stem portion 7.
As shown in Fig. 4, the self-coiling rolls 9 are provided with a cover 11 snap-fitted on to the rear face of the upper stem portion 7. This facility allows the self-coiling rolls 9 to be changed, whereby other information can be displayed through the window 10. The top portion of the upper stem portion 7 is shown as being plain, although any other suitable information regarding the products with which the stand 1, 1' is associated, may be provided, by either printing on this portion or inserting pre-printed tickets into a window display area.
Thus, it can be seen that these two particular embodiments of erectable price ticket display stand 1, 1' are ideally suited for transportation and storage purposes, in that in their non-erected conditions, both the stand 2 and stem 4 lie in a generally common plane, whilst the stem can easily be pivoted with respect to the base 2 about the hinge 5, to place the stands in their erected and usabie conditions, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
With reference now to Figs. 5 and 5A, this third embodiment of price ticket display stand incorporates a facility for adding further information to the display. Such a facility is provided buy a channel 51 at the rear of the top edge of the upper stem part 7'. Slidably engaged within this channel 51 is a depending web 52 of a display element 53 which, in this particular case, has "SPECIAL OFFER" marked on its front face.
Although the element 53 is slidable with respect to the top edge of the upper stem portion 7', by means of the channel 51 and depending portion 52, additional frictional engagement therebetween is provided by a further, generally
L-shaped portion 54 of the display element 53.
Thus, the element 53 can be firmly, but not permanently, attached to the top edge of the upper stem portion 7' by such an arrangement. If the display element 53 is not required, then it can be slid from the channel 51 which, because it is located behind the upper stem portion 7', cannot be seen when the stand is viewed from the front.
Turning now to a fourth embodiment of price ticket display stand 61, as shown in Figs. 6 to 10, this is similar to the three previous embodiments described above with reference to Figs. 1 to 5, except that its stem 66 is in two parts 67, 68 which can be detachably secured together by means of a snap-fitting, male and female arrangement 69, 70, as shown in Figs. 8 and 10.
The upper stem part 68 is provided with a display area 77 and three self-coiling rolls 79 with the required pricing indicia printed thereon. The lower stem part 67 is connected to the base 62 by means of a hinge arrangement 65. In the erected condition, this lower part 67 is snap-fitted to the base 62 by means of a similar or identical arrangement to that described above for the embodiments of Figs. 1 to 5. The detachable upper stem part 68, and associated display area 77 and price indicia rolls 79, enables other similar upper stem parts to be used for displaying different information or pricing indicia.
A fifth embodiment, as shown in Figs. 11 to 15, is practically identical to that described above with regard to Figs. 6 to 10, except that it has an additional facility for changing information in the display area 77'. This facility comprises a window 81 through which can be viewed information on the front surface of a panel 82 locatable in a required position by being slid between a pair of channels 83 on the rear of the display area of the upper part 84 of the stem. A stop 85 is provided to ensure that the information panel 82 is located in the proper position with respect to the window 81, in use of the stand.
Both the fourth and fifth embodiments of Figs.
6 to 10 and Figs. 11 to 1 5 are provided with a channel for receiving slidably an additional display element, such as that described above with reference to Figs. 5 and 5A. However, the channel in these two latter embodiments is defined by a pair of spaced, shorter channel portions 51', rather than a continuous length of channel 51 as in the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 5A.
With reference now to Figs. 1 6 to 1 9 of the drawings, here there is shown a sixth embodiment of display stand 140 comprising a moulded plastics front plate 141 with two windows 142, 143 therein, and a moulded plastics rear plate 142.
The left hand window 142 is used to display information relating to the products with which the stand 1 40 is associated, whilst the right hand window 143 displays the price of the product by means of one or more, but in this particular case four, self-coiling rolls 145 located in side-by-side relationship and arranged to be adjusted to display different prices.
The front and back plates 141, 144 are joined together in a snap-fit manner, or alternatively, by adhesive or welding, and the rear plate 144 is provided with clips 146 for detachably securing the stand 140 to the edge of a shelf, as shown in
Fig. 6. The two halves 145' of each self-coiling roll 145 are located behind the rear plate 144 within an open rectangular housing 147. This housing 1 47 can be provided with a protective cover, although this particular arrangement is not shown in the drawings.
Turning now to the seventh embodiment of display frame 180, as shown in Figs. 20 to 22, this is very similar to the display stand 140 described above with respect to Figs. 1 6 to 19, except that it is provided with an indicating facility, in the form of an adjustable arrow 1 90.
This adjustable indicating arrow 190 can be in either a first position, wherein it is pointing upwardly, as shown in Figs. 20 and 22, or in a second position, wherein it is pointing downwardly, as shown in Fig. 21.
The arrow 1 90 is retained in either position by means of a rectangular slot 191 in which is received a correspondingly-shaped lug 1 92 located on the rear surface of the front plate 193, as shown in Fig. 22. A similar fixing arrangement is provided for the second downward position of the arrow, as shown in Fig. 21.
This arrow 1 90 is used to indicate whether the goods are upon the shelf to which the stand 180 is attached, that is to say, in the first upwardly pointing position, or therebelow, namely, in its second downwardly pointing position.
The eighth embodiment of ticket display stand 240 shown in Figs. 23 to 32 is similar to those described above with regard to Figs. 1 6 to 22.
However, this particular form of stand 240 is capable of being free-standing in that it is provided with a planar press-out foot 250 which is integrally moulded with the rear part of the stand during manufacture. The foot 250 is maintained in its moulded-in position, as shown in Figs. 23 and 27, by means of integral tabs 251.
When it is required to make the stand 240 freestanding, the foot 250 is pressed out, breaking the tabs 251. It is then located on the rear part of the stand, generally at right angles thereto, by means of a pair of slots 252 in which are received respective lugs 253 located below the housing 254 for the self-coiling rolls 255 at the rear of the stand 240. This arrangement maintains the stand 240 in an upright position when stood on a generally horizontai surface. The aperture 256 remaining after the foot 250 has been pressed out is covered by any information panel (not shown) inserted between the front and rear parts of the stand, with the necessary information being visible through the display window 257.
The final, and ninth, embodiment of display stand 340 is shown in Figs. 33 to 37. Here, a press-out foot 250, although present in its originally moulded form, is replaced, in its position at right angles to the general plane of the stand, by a generally L-shaped member 351 which has a foot portion 352, for supporting the stand in its upright position, and a cover portion 355 which acts as a rear cover for the housing 353 in which the self-coiling rolls 354 are located. The Lshaped member 351 is detachably secured to the rear part of the stand 340, below the roll housing 353, in a similar manner to that of the foot 250 described above with reference to the embodiment of Figs. 23 to 32. However, the locating slots (not shown), for receiving the respective lugs 356, are formed in a flange 357 of the L-shaped member 351, which lies in generally the same plane as the foot portion 352 but which extends in the opposite direction thereto.
Although the eighth and ninth embodiments of display stand are provided with a respective foot 250 and foot portion 352 for free standing purposes, it will be appreciated that either can have the shelf mounting clips, such as those shown in the embodiments of tigs.16 to 22, whereby either may be shelf-mounted or freestanding.
Also, the embodiments of display stand described above can be made of any suitable materials but are preferably moulded from a plastics material.
