Abstract

A boxing glove comprises a finger portion 1, a thumb portion 2 and a leather strip 3 which serves to join the thumb portion 2 to the finger portion 1. The consequent restriction of movement of the thumb portion 2 relative to the finger portion 1 reduces both the likelihood of injury to the boxer's thumb and the likelihood of injury to his opponent's eyes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to boxing gloves THIS INVENTION relates to boxing gloves.
A typical prior proposed boxing glove comprises a finger portion to accommodate the fingers of a boxer and a thumb portion to accommodate the thumb of a boxer. The thumb portion may be moved outwardly enabling the boxer to gauge the eyes of his opponent. Also, if the thumb portion does move outwardly it is possible that the thumb of the boxer may be damaged.
The present invention also seeks to provide an improved boxing glove.
According to this invention there is provided a boxing glove comprising a finger portion adapted to accommodate the fingers of the wearer and a thumb portion adaped to accommodate the wearer's thumb, there being a means to connect substantially the entire length of at least one edge of the thumb portion to thefinger portion in orderto limit separation thereof.
Preferably, the said means for attaching the thumb portion to the finger portion comprises a web like insert attached both to an edge of the thumb portion adjacent the finger portion and also to a palm portion of the finger portion.
Conveniently, the said web like insert is leather or other suitable material.
Advantageously, at least one pad of a foamed plastics material is inserted in the finger and thumb portions.
Preferably said pad has a region to be inserted in the finger portion, a region to be inserted in the thumb portion, and a region to form a finger protecting protrusion extending from the finger portion of the finished glove towards the thumb portion.
Conveniently two foam pads are incorporated in the glove, the pads being interconnected and imparting a pre-shaped clenched form to the glove.
According to another aspect of this invention there is provided a boxing glove comprising a finger portion adapted to accomodate the fingers of the wearer and a thumb portion adapted to accommodate the wearer's thumb, there being a web like insert connected at one side to substantially the entire length of one edge of the thumb portion and at the other side to the finger portion in order to limit the permissible separation of the thumb portion and the finger portion.
So that the invention may be more readily understood and so that further features may be appreciated, a boxing glove in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE lisa side elevation of the glove; and FIGURE 2 is a plan view of two foam pads used to form the glove of Figure 1.
The boxing glove illustrated in the drawing is largely conventional, and comprises a padded finger portion 1 constructed primarily from leather which is adapted to accommodate the four fingers of the boxer. A padded leather thumb portion 2 adapted to accommodate the boxer's thumb is located in a conventional position, opening into the finger portion of the glove at a location adjacent the part which will be occupied by the boxer's wrist in use. The thumb portion 2 has an inner edge 2a adjacentthe finger portion 1, and an outer edge 2b.
A strip 3 of leather is stitched along substantially the entire length of the inner edge 2a of the thumb portion 2, and is also stitched to the welt of the adjacent portion of the finger portion 1, the said adjacent portion of the finger portion 1 being part of the area of the glove which will lie adjacent the boxer's palm. The leather strip 3 thus serves to connect the thumb portion 2 to the finger portion 1 which is in a curled condition and therefore the strip limits the movement of the thumb portion relative to the finger portion 1.This has been found to provide three advantages: the boxer's thumb cannot be bent back towards his wrist during a fight, and thus there is less likelihood that his thumb will be broken, the free end of the boxer's thumb cannot extend beyond the finger portion of the glove, and thus there is less likelihood that his opponent's eyes will be gouged; and the glove is pre-shaped to form a fist, and thus the boxer is less likely to experience cramp caused by continually making his hand into a fist.
Figure 2 shows two pads 4, 5 which are insereted into the thumb portion 2 of the glove in a- particularly preferred embodiment of the invention. Each pad 4 or 5 comprises a foamed plastics material such as is commercially available under the Registered Trade Mark"AIREX", "AIREX" being particularly preferred since it has a closed cell construction with particularly good impact cushioning, resistance to humidity and dimensional stability. One of the said pads is an under-pad 4 and the other is a top pad 5. The two pads 4, 5 constitute the padding within the glove. The pads have been found to provide a degree of anti-percussive protection for the boxer's hand. The top pad 5 has a generally rectangular portion 6 to lie over the fingers of a boxer, a thumb portion 7to lie over the thumb of the boxer, and a finger protector portion 8 which effectively forms a bump on the side of the glove. The under- pad 4 is a rectangular pad which is smaller than the top pad. The two pads are superimposed and adhered together in a preformed curled condition before being incorporated into the glove with the under- pad closest to the space occupied by the boxer's hand. Thus the pads retain the glove in the illustrated pre-shaped form.
The degree of permitted movement of the thumb portion 2 relative to the finger portion 1 can be varied by selecting the leather strip 3 to be of an appropriate width.
Although the glove in accordance with the invention has been described as being constructed from leather, this is merely because leather is the material which is conventionally used for making boxing gloves and, clearly, other materials such as plastics materials could be used.
