Balances; pendulum-weight apparatus; indicating-mechanism; vibration, preventing and neutralizing.-A balance provided with a goodspan, a weighted balance lever adapted to indicate upon a chart fractions of a certain weight, and a weight-pan adapted to receive weights corresponding to the maximum of the chart or multiples, thereof, is provided at the end of the balance lever with a vernier which registers with an equally divided rectilineal chart. As shown, a goods pan h, Figs. 2 and 4, and weightpan h<1> are suspended from the ends of a beam d pivoted on a central knife-edge f and formed integral with a balance lever d<1> provided with an adjustable weight d<2>. The lower end of the balance lever d' carries an index d<3> adapted to indicate on rectilineal, equally divided charts g, g<1>, one on each side of the frame a. The index may be provided with one vernier, Fig. 9, or with two verniers, Fig. 5, one, for use on each side of the vertical centre line of the chart. The division lines of the vernier are curved or inclined in order that the lengths of the chart g between the intersections of the division lines may be constant or approximately so. Optical means may be provided to facilitate reading. The index is obtained at the zero of the chart for no load' by a weight n attached to the weightpan and corresponding to half the capacity of the chart. The oscillations of the balance lever are checked by a strip of flexible material k which may be brought into contact with the lower end of the index by pressing down the end m of the lever l upon which the strip is mounted. A projection l<2> on the lever l is adapted to contact with an adjustable stop l' and arrest the strip k in the required position. Rods h<2> projecting from the scale-pans pass through holes in plates i freely mounted on supports j, and serve to damp the movements of the pans. In a modification the index is carried by an arm projecting at an angles from the beam and the chart is correspondingly arranged. The invention may be applied to a Roberval or other type of balance.
