Abstract

A glass pane 8 is held in position on a glazing bar 1 by a plastics glazing strip 6 extruded from a two- component plastics composition so that the bulk of the strip is relatively rigid but the free end of wall 6B, which contacts the glass pane, is resiliently flexible. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Glazing system for greenhouses This invention is concerned with a new glazing system for greenhouses in which a plastics glazing strip is used in combination with a glazing bar instead of the conventional spring steel glazing clips.
In a conventional greenhouse glazing system, panes of glass are pressed against sealing strips mounted on glazing bars by a number of spaced spring steel glazing clips.
One end of each clip bears against the edge of the glass pane and the other end is engaged with a fin extending outwardly from the glazing bar and running along the full length of the glazing bar. Since the glazing bar is generally an aluminium extrusion, the fin acts as a heat exchange and/or radiator surface and can be a significant source of heat loss from the greenhouse through its aluminium frame. Additionally, under adverse weather conditions, the spaced glazing strips allow access of wind and rain around the edge of the glass pane to attack the sealing strip.
These problems are overcome in our new glazing system by replacing the glazing clip by a plastics glazing strip having a resiliently flexible portion which bears against the whole length of an edge of a pane of glass and a rigid portion which is located on an upstanding fin on the glazing bar. The major surfaces of the fin are shrouded by the glazing strip. In this way a complete weather seal is provided along the edge of the pane of glass and the support fin on the glazing bar is shielded from contact with the external air.
The glazing strip needs to be relatively rigid where it engages the glazing bar but resiliently flexible where it contacts the glass pane.
This effect is achieved by extruding the glazing strip from a two-component plastics mixture so that parts of the strip which engage the strip with the fin are formed from a relatively rigid plastics material and the glass contacting part is formed from a relatively flexible plastics material. In particular, we have found that an effective glazing strip is obtained by use of two different PVC compositions which are extruded together to form a strip having intergral flexible and rigid portions.
In a preferred form, the glazing strip has a substantially channel shaped configuration, and is positioned on a glazing bar with the closed base of the channel facing outwardly, and with one wall of the channel engaged with support fin of the glazing bar and the other wall of the channel, which is resiliently flexible, bearing against the pane of glass.
The glazing strip may be engaged with the glazing bar by locating the free end of the channel wall which is adjacent the fin in a slot on the glazing bar with the base of the channel, or an extension of the base, engaging a lip on the end of the fin.
Two embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which both figures show a transverse section through a glazing bar and glazing strip combination.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the glazing bar comprises a hollow box section 1 extruded fro aluminium. The aluminium extrusion also includes a T-slot 2 in which can be located the heads of bolts by which the glazing bar is bolted to the rest of the aluminium greenhouse framework, two slots 3 in which are located flexible plastics sealing strips 4 and an upstanding fin 5 which serves to locate the glazing strips 6.
Each glazing strip 6 is of substantially channel shaped configuration havinhg walls 6A, 6B and base 6C. One wall 6A of the channel in positioned adjacent the fin 5 and has one end located in a slot 7 formed on the extrusion at the base of the fin 5. The glazing strip is held in position on the glazing bar by the base 6C of the channel, or as shown here, a protrusion 8 formed at the junction of wall 6A and base 6C, being engaged with a lip 5A on the end of the fin 5. The other wall 6B of the channel shaped glazing strip, of lower height than wall 6A, bears against a pane of glass 8 and presses it against the sealing strip 4 lodged in the box section of the glazing bar.
The free end of the wall 6B is turned outwardly and thinned to allow a close fitting seal against the glas pane. The wall 6B needs to have sufficient flexibility to allow the glazing strip to be located on the glazing bar after the glass pane has been presented against the sealing strip 4, but then must also have sufficient resilience to maintain the glass in position. We have found that the appropriate resilience and flexibility can be obtained most effectively by extruding the glazing strip using a 2-component plastics mixture. In particular we have found it most effective to form a glazing strip as shown in the drawings with at least the free end of the arm 6B being formed from a flexible plastics composition and the arm 6A and base 6C being formed from a rigid plastics composition, the whole being formed as an integral structure by simultaneous extrusion of the two compositions. The flexibility thus provided in the arm 6B allows the use of glass panels of varying thickness in the glazing of the greenhouse, as shown in the drawings.
The desired effect may be achieved by extruding the glazing strip using a rigid and a flexible grade of PVC, for example as supplied by ICI under the registered trade mark "Welbick" and using Welbick Grade 0 for the rigid portion and Welbick Grade 25 for the flexible portion.
The base 6B of the strip may be thickened in part by a longitudinal protrusion as shown in the drawing.
While this invention has been described in terms of its application to greenhouses, it will be readily appreciated that it is equally applicable to similar glazed structures such as conservatories, sun rooms, cold frames etc., intended for home assembly.
Another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. As before a glazing strip 16 is substantially channel-shaped and is extruded from a two-component PVC composition so that the channel surfaces 1 6A, 1 6B and part of 1 6C are relatively rigid and the free end of wall 1 6C is resiliently flexible. In this embodiment the free end of the wall 1 6A is again located in a slot 17 formed longitudinally on a box section glazing bar, and lies against an upstanding fin 15. However in this embodiment the lip 1 5A in which the fin 15 terminates is turned over to form a longitudinal groove and into this groove is located a protrusion 1 6D formed longitudinally on the outside of the base 1 6C opposite to the wall 1 6A. The glazing strip is thus maintained in position not only by the pressure of the base 1 6C against the lip 1 5A due to the resilience of the wall 6B when engaged with a glass pane but has the added security of the interaction between the protrusion 1 6D and the lip 15A.
