Abstract

A sleeve 5 in combination with a base plate 15 defines a housing for a roller shutter 6 and may also act as a lintel support to be keyed into the masonry 3. The shutter 6 is carried on a spindle 7 and can be pulled out through a slot 10 in front of a window 1 along guide channels 8. In its fully extended position the shutter 6 can be locked in place to act as a security covering over the window. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to door or window covering devices This invention is concerned with devices enabling a door, window or the like to be covered especially for protection, for example against wilful damage. Whilst the covering device would be suitable for security for shop fronts, or even for closing openings to garages, for example, it is mainly anticipated for domestic use, especially for covering or protecting house windows.
According to the present invention there is provided a covering device for a door, window or the like, comprising a sleeve forming part of or for securing to and below a lintel, and housing an extendable shutter member which can be withdrawn through a slot along one edge of the sleeve so that, in use, the shutter will extend as a covering protective member down and in front of the door or window or the like.
Such a covering device may readily be installed when constructing a building, especially when the sleeve actually forms part of the lintel, to go above a window or doorway or other opening, and has the advantage that the shutter, when not in use, is hidden away in the structure of the building.
Particularly where the covering device is to be used to protect against wilful damage, it may be of slatted, chain link or flexible mesh form and can be constructed mainly from wood, metal or plastics material to provide a tamper-resistant barrier. However, it is envisaged that the shutter could equally be of curtain-like form for use on the interior surface of a window, for example, and thus would replace a conventional curtain or blind.
The shutter could be of concertina form but it is preferred that the shutter should be coiled onto a spindle. Ideally the shutter will be biased into the closed position in the sleeve so that when released it will automatically be drawn up into the sleeve. If the shutter is coiled onto a spindle then the biasing could be provided by a coil spring acting on the spindle.
Advantageously, the sleeve will be provided with a removable access plate so that adjustments may be made to the shutter if necessary. The sleeve may have an independent base plate which will be fitted initially as a base soffit to the head of a door or window frame or the like before the rest of the sleeve, providing a lintel, is mounted in position. The exit slot in the sleeve could be provided with a draft-resisting flap, brush filaments or the like. If the sleeve is to provide a lintel of substantial length, it may be of advantage to form the sleeve with an upwardly extending leg portion having a flange to be keyed into the masonry of a building of which the sleeve will form a part.It may be desirable to provide a stepped flashing member which has a flange to be keyed into the masonry and a downwardly angled leg which will meet the outer edge of the casing and act as a damp proof course to deflect water towards the outer wall of a double skin building.
It is also preferred that guide channels for the edges of the shutter extend down from both ends of the sleeve. For most purposes the covering device will include a locking member to hold the shutter securely down in the extended position.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:~ Figure 1 is a vertical section through a window lintel incorporating a security device of this invention; Figure 2 is a horizontal section through a window incorporating the security device; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a partially constructed wall incorporating the security device; and Figure 4 is a diagrammatic vertical section illustrating a means for locking the shutter of the security device in the extended position.
A window shown generally at 1 in Figures 1 and 2 is provided with a window lintel support member 2 built into the brickwork 3 of a building and supporting a concrete lintel 3A. A downwardly extended limb 4 of the lintel 2 forms one wall of a sleeve 5 which houses a slatted roller shutter 6 mounted rotatively on a spindle 7 carried by the end walls of the sleeve 5. Extending downwardly from the sleeve 5 are a pair of guide channels 8 which receive and guide the free end 9 and edges of the slatted shutter 6, as it is withdrawn from the sleeve 5 through an exit slot 10. This slot 10 might be provided with nylon brush filaments or a flexible flap which will resist the ingress of draughts or rain. The guide channels 8 are held in place by an integral cavity closer 1 1 and may be formed from p.v.c. material.
The cavity closer 11 can incorporate grooves which will receive wall ties 12 which key into the brickwork 3.
The base part of the sleeve 5 is in independent base soffit 14 which is fixed to the window frame 13 by nails 1 5. The main parts of the sleeve 5 together with the base plate 1 5 define an opening 16 through which the shutter 6 may be inserted in its extended state so that a small diameter for the remaining portion of the rolled-up shutter will be presented for introduction through the restricted opening 16. This opening also provides access to the interior of the sleeve for maintenance or adjustment of the shutter mechanism and is closed off by an extruded plastics cover 17 which clips onto the base plate 15 at one end 18 and is fixed by screws 19 at the other end.
With advantage a stepped flashing 20 (Figure 3) may be provided. This has a flange 21 which will key into the masonry and a downwardly angled face 22 which will meet the outer edge of the sleeve 5 and thus direct water away towards the outer wall of the double skin building. Where the sleeve 5 is to be of substantial length, extra strengthening may be provided by forming the sleeve 5 with an extension portion 23 (Figure 1) terminating in a flange 24 which will key onto the masonry. This extension portion 23 itself can act in a manner similar to the flashing 20.
The lintel 2 and the rest of the building structure will be filled and faced in the usual way by plaster work 25.
When the shutter is in its fully extended position it may be held in place, both to resist unauthorised removal and against the bias of a return coil spring (not shown) on the spindle 7, by a locking pin 26 (Figure 4) received in a passageway at the base of the window frame and passing through a hole in the end of the shutter 6.
Of course the shutter 6 could be made to extend on the inner surface of the window frame 13 so as to provide an internal protective member or curtain. This would require minor modification to the construction of the sleeve 5.
