Abstract

Transmission cables for supplying electric power to mobile mining machines are used extensively. A problem exists of the cable being run over by other machines because the cable is difficult to see in the dark environment of the mine. In order to render the cable (10a, 10b) more readily visible, at least one continuous ribbon (16, 18, 36) including a multiplicity of light reflective elements is embedded in outer jacket (12a, 12b) of the cable (10a, 10b) along the entire length of the cable. The ribbon (16, 18, 36) may be a light reflective tape sold by the 3M Company under the trademark "SCOTCH-LITE" Brand Reflective sheeting No. 8190 Silver. The tape is placed in contact with the outer jacket (12a, 12b) before the outer jacket is cured, and embedded in the outer jacket by a procedure including encasing the entire cable and tape in molten lead, curing, and then removing the lead.
