Pistons, balancing laterally.- In order to prevent piston slap, a trunk piston is formed of increasingly elliptical cross-section from the head downwards, with the major axis at right-angles to the gudgeon pin. For this purpose the piston may be distorted by a bolt 2 the head and nut of which engage the gudgeon-pin bosses, and ground &c. to cylindrical form while extended, the bolt being then removed.
