Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements relating to bed headboards
Bed headboards are generally of fairly standard design although the shapes may vary. Thus there is often provided a fabric or plastic covering integrally secured to a backing board. Where fabric is employed it may be extremely difficult to clean the fabric adequately and remove soiling which builds up over a period of time from the head of the user of the bed.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved form of bed headboard which is of attractive design and which enables cleaning to be carried out readily.
Accordingly this invention provides a bed headboard comprising a substantially rigid board member with mounting means for affixing the board member to a bed and a removable fabric cover which wraps around the board member and has fixing studs or the like which secure the cover removably to the board member.
With such an arrangement, the cover can be removed as required and can then be subjected to normal washing to remove soiling. In the preferred form the cover comprises a sleeve which slides over the top of the board member, with free portions which will be attached to mounting members on the board member or will be wrapped around at least the lower edge of the board member. The fixing studs may be poppers to cooperate with complementary parts secured to the rear of the board member. Alternatively, velcrotype fastening tape (VELCRO is a Registered Trade
Mark) may be attached to mutually overlapping free edges of the cover enabling these edges to be interconnected after the sleeve has been slid over the headboard.Ideally the free edges of the cover incorporating the fixing studs or the like are strengthened by forming a hem or sewing on tape, so as to provide secure anchoring for the studs and to help the cover to be held tightly over the board member.
It may be preferred that the board surface should be padded with a resilient material. An additional feature for the bed headboard may be a decorative front frame removably attached to the front face of the board member in front of the cover, with openings in the frame member leaving portions of the cover open to view. Where the board front surface is of padded form, parts of the frame extending, for example, downwardly between the top and bottom edges thereof, can press into the resilient material forming the padding so as to give the appearance of padded sections. The frame member may be attached to the board member by releasable bolts passing through aligned holes in the frame member and board member. Carved or moulded decoration can be formed on the exposed surface of the frame member.
Removable studs may also be provided either attached to the cover or designed to pass through holes in the cover for fixing onto the board
member underneath, so as to give a buttoning effect to the padded front of the headboard.
This invention may be performed in various ways and preferred embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of a bedheadboard;
Figure 2 is a view of a cover of this invention to be positioned over the headboard shown in
Figure 1;
Figure 3 illustrates a decorative frame to be attached to the headboard shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 illustrates a connecting stud for securing the frame of Figure 3 to the headboard of
Figure 1;
Figure 5 illustrates an alternative form of decorative frame to be attached to the headboard;
Figure 6 is an alternative form of cover to be positioned over the headboard; and
Figures 7 and 8 show two possible forms of stud to be carried by the headboard.
The improved headboard of this invention is illustrated basically in Figures 1 and 2. It comprises a board member generally indicated at 1 carrying a pair of support struts 2 by which it may be secured to a bed head. The board member 1 will comprise a pair of plywood sheets of which the rear sheet 3 will be covered with cloth whilst the front sheet 4 will have padded material secured thereon. The edges of the material covering the sheets 3 and 4 will be trapped between the adjacent surfaces of the plywood sheets which will be glued together. The sleeve 5 shown in Figure 2 has an upper pocket 6 which will be slid over the top of the board member 1, and side and bottom flaps 7 and 8 will then be wrapped around the side and bottom edges of the board member 1.The flaps 7, 8 and the free edge 9 of the pocket 6 are strengthened by having tape sewn thereon and carry poppers 1 0. These poppers are affixed to complementary parts 11 fixed to the rear of the board member 1 so as to hold the sleeve 5 securely and tightly over the front face of the board member.
When the sleeve becomes soiled with use it can readily be removed and washed. The sleeve may of course be made from decorative material carrying a preferred design.
An additional feature giving added decoration to the headboard is the frame member 12 shown in Figure 3. This can have intermediate struts 1 3 extending downwardly. The frame member 12 is secured to the board member 1 by bolts passing through holes 14 and corresponding holes in the board member 1. A suitable bolt is illustrated in
Figure 4 and has a circular padded head 1 5 together with a stem 1 6 carrying a rigid wire loop 1 7 passing through a hole 1 8. The wire loop 1 7 and the stem 1 6 are threaded through a hole 14 until the hole 1 8 is visible on the rear side of the board member.The wire loop 1 7 can then be slid partially through the hole 1 8 so that it then lies against the back of the board member and holds the frame member 12 securely thereto.
The headboard shown in Figure 5 also carries a removable frame member 1 2A which is held onto the board member by bolts having decorative heads 1 9. Figure 5 also shows how a buttoning effect may be achieved by fixing button-like studs 20 through holes in the sleeve 5 onto connectors on the front face of the headboard so as to compress partially the padding on the front of the headboard.
Figure 6 illustrates an alternative form of sleeve 5A which is designed to slip completely over the board member 1. Cut-outs 21 are provided to receive the support struts 2. At the bottom edge of the sleeve there are formed flaps 22, 23. The flaps 22 incorporate holes 24 which will be located over studs projecting from the bottom edge of the headboard 1 whilst the flap 23 carries poppers 25 which will fix onto those studs so as to hold the sleeve 5A securely onto the headboard. The front face of the sleeve is provided with holes 26 to receive the button studs 20 as illustrated in
Figure 5. One form of stud mounting to be fixed to the lower underneath edge of the headboard 1 is shown in Figure 7. This comprises a plate 27 carrying a stud 28 which is mounted by means of nails 29 driven into the board member. An alternative form of stud mounting plate 30 shown in Figure 8 has side portions 31 which will be bent to lie against the front and rear surfaces of the board member 1 and pointed end portions 32 which will be driven into the front and rear surfaces of the board member.
It will be appreciated that the frame member
12 may have any desired design moulded or carved thereon. Furthermore the headboard and the frame member need not be of generally oblong shape but could be formed with a specially shaped top surface (e.g. curved); the pocket 6 of the sleeve 5 would be similarly shaped. The poppers or studs attached to the sleeve can be formed from metal or from a plastics material which will not rattle inside a washing machine.
