Description
1 GB 2 101 038A 1
SPECIFICATION
Disposable product with hydrophobic anti wetback sheet This invention relates to disposable products, such as diapers, sanitary pads, or underpads, and more particularly to a diposable product having a wet strength hydrophobic tissure wadding for preventing fluid wetback while maintaining the shape of the abosrbent pad.
Disposable diapers having an absorbent pad formed of a core of wood fluff or like material are well known. These pads have been used with and provided with a tissue wadding which, in the past, has been of highly fluid permeable and fluid absorbent materal. Waddings have been used to wrap the absorbent pad, but the tissue wadding when wet loses strength and, in use, the pad often loses its shape and its absorbing qualities, and permits an unwanted degree of fluid wetback.
Attempts have been made to provide a barrier to the fluid wetback, such as the barrier layer shown in the patent to John Michael Hernandez, No. 3, 987,792, for Disposable Diaper Having Improved Liquid Retention. However, the hydrophobic fibres of the barrier layer of this prior patent form a relatively thick resilient fibrous pad and because of the resistance to penetration by fluids which is present, a water pervious top layer having fluid feeding openings therein must also be used.
The present invention overcomes the difficulties of the prior art and achieves the results desired by providing a disposable product including both a hydrophobic non-woven top sheet and a tissue wadding preferably a thin wadding e.g. a tissue thin wadding, which is preferably wrapped about the absorbent pad so that the tissue wadding being of hydrophobic nature tends to retain its full strength even after fluid has passed into the absorbent pad and cooperates with the top sheet in preventing fluid wetback, thus providing a dry surface in contact with the skin of the user.
Accordingly, the primary object of the present invention is to provide a disposable dia- per having means to retain the shape of the absorbent pad and which reduces fluid wetback.
Another object of the invention is to provide a disposable diaper having two thin layers of hydrophobic non-woven material to reduce fluid wetback and maintain an infant using the disposable diaper in a dryer condition.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a disposable diaper which provides a high degree of resistance to fluid weback yet does not require a thick barrier layer, thereby providing an increased amount of absorbing material while limiting the bulk and size of the diaper.
The invention may be put into practice in 130 various ways and two specific embodiments will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a first embodiment of a diaper constructed according to the present invention, with parts being broken away to show other parts in details; Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken along the plane of the line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a second preferred embodiment of the invention with the tissue wadding wrapped about the pad.
In the accompanying drawings like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views. Reference numeral 10 is used to generally designate a disposable diaper construted in accordance with the present invention. The diaper comprises, in order, a top sheet 12 formed by non-woven hydrophobic fibres of polyethylene or polypropylene or a mixture thereof. This layer is water pervious, but not water absorbing, and permits passage of waste fluid toward the bsorbent pad 14, which is separated from the top sheet 12 by a tissue wadding 16 of hydrophobic non-woven fibres, preferably of polyethylene or polypropylene, or a mixture thereof.
A wadding 18 lies beneath the pad 14 between it and a water impervious backing sheet 20 formed of a suitable synthetic plastic material, such as polyethylene film (see Fig.2). The backing sheet is folded over the edges of the top sheet 12 at 22 and secured thereto to hold the diaper in assembled condition. Adhesives, heat sealing, embossing or other means may be used for assembly purposes. The core 14 is preferably formed of a wood fluff or tissue layers of paper-like material, which are highly absorbent. This material, when subjected to stress, will readily distort.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 a tissue wadding 26 is wrapped about the pad 4 in lieu of the wadding sheets 16 and 18. This increases the support given to the pad 14 and further assists in assuring its shape.
The wrapping wadding 26 maintains the shape of the pad by providing a high strength wrapping because this hydrophobic material has a very good degree of wet strength and in fact does not absorb fluid, thereby not becoming weakened by the passage of fluid therethrough. The hydrophobic material resists fluid wetback and in conjuction with the hydrophobic top sheet achives a high degree of reistance to fluid wetback, even through the material will readily allow fluid to pass through it into the pad 14. This is because the wadding, 16, 18 or 26 being made of hydrophobic fibres, unlike the tissue waddings of the prior art, does not absorb fluid.
