Abstract
A trailer or van body has rear corner posts 16 comprising two arms, 17, 18 extending longitudinally from the top to the bottom of the trailer, the arms being integral with one another along one of the longitudinal edges so as to form a right-angle bend 21. One arm 17 fits adjacent the side panels 13 of the trailer and the other arm 18 fits adjacent the rear of the trailer each arm having a bend at 23, 22 or adjacent the free longitudinal edge. The post is simple in design and is made from a single strip of material, rather than comprising several welded components as is stated to be the prior art arrangement. <IMAGE>
Description
CORNER POST FOR TRAILERS AND SEMI-TRAILERS
The invention relates to trailers, semi-trailers and van bodies and in particular to rear corner posts for such trailers.
The corner posts of trailers and van bodies are required, not only to provide the trailer with structural rigidity, but also to provide means for supporting other components of the trailer such as,- for example, the side panels or rear doors. Hitherto such posts have been of complicated construction usually comprising several components welded or bolted together.
A trailer in accordance with the invention has rear corner posts comprising two arms extending longitudinally from the top to the bottom of the trailer, the arms being integral with one another along one of the longitudinal edges so as to form a right-angle bend, one arm fitting adjacent the side of the trailer and the other arm fitting adjacent the rear of the trailer wherein each arm has a bend at or adjacent its free longitudinal edge.
Such a corner post is extremely simple in design and can be made from a single strip of material.
Preferably the bend in the said one arm is closely adjacent one free longitudinal edge of the post and projects inwardly towards the trailer body. The bend in the said other arm is preferably at the other free longitudinal edge of the post and that edge curves away from the trailer body. A third bend may be provided, at or adjacent the right angle bend of the post, which projects outwardly from the trailer body to protect the rivets passing through the corner post.
Preferably the bend in the arm which fits adjacent the side of the trailer, supports the side panel of the trailer and may also support guide means for the rear shutter. The bend in the arm adjacent the rear of the trailer may serve to protect the rear shutter and generally strengthen the post.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a rear view of a trailer or van body with corner posts in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 2 shows a plan sectional view of one of the corner posts in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 the rear of the trailer 10 comprises a floor 11, side panels 13, a roof 15 and a rear shutter 12 which can be raised or lowered as required.
The rear corner posts 16 extend longitudinally from the top to the bottom of the trailer.
As shown in cross-section in Figure 2 each post 16 is formed in one piece and has two arms 17 and 18 which are integral with one another along one longitudinal edge 18 (see Figure 1) to form a right angle bend 21. The arm 17 is fitted adjacent the side of the trailer while the arm 18 is fitted adjacent the rear of the trailer. The arm 17 has an inwardly projecting bend 23 adjacent its end, running the entire length of the post, the bend serving to support the side panel 13. The end of the arm 18 is bent outwardly from the trailer to form a bend 22, also running along the entire length of the post, which protects the shutter and generally strengthens the post 16. The post is provided with a third outwardly projecting bend 20 adjacent the right angle bend 21 into which the heads of rivets, driven through the corner post, can be fitted.
A member 17 having an L-shaped cross-section is provided between the bend 23 and the arm 18 and serves to support the shutter guide 14, in which the shutter 12 may be slid up and down.
Thus a rear corner post in accordance with the invention is able to provide the necessary support for various components of the trailer while having the simplicity of being formed in one piece which represents a manufacturing advantage.
Claims (10)
1. A trailer having a rear corner post comprising two arms extending longitudinally from the top to the bottom of the trailer, the arms being integral with one another along one of the longitudinal edges so as to form a right angle bend, one arm fitting adjacent the side of the trailer and the other arm fitting adjacent the rear of the trailer wherein each arm has a bend at or adjacent its free longitudinal edge.
2. A trailer having a rear corner post as claimed in claim 1 wherein the bend in the said one arm is closely adjacent the free longitudinal edge of the post and projects inwardly towards the trailer body.
3. A trailer having a rear corner post as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the bend in the said other arm is at the free longitudinal edge of the post, the longitudinal edge curving outwardly from the trailer body.
4. A trailer having a rear corner post as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a third bend is provided at or adjacent the right angle bend of the post, the third bend projecting outwardly from the trailer body.
5. A trailer having a rear corner post as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the bend in the said one arm supports the side panel of the trailer.
6. A trailer having a rear corner post as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the bend in the one said arm supports guide means for a shutter.
7. A trailer having a rear corner post as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the bend in the said other arm protects the shutter and generally strengthens the post.
