Abstract
The present invention relates to sensing and more particularly to sensing finding application in the detection of gases. The invention provides a method for the detection of a gas which includes contacting the gas with a surface which surface has a region coated with a material which is capable of catalysing a reaction involving the gas when the gas is in the presence of the material such that a temperature change is produced, and sensing the temperature change. The gas may be, for example, a combustible gas such as H2, CO or H2S. The material may be, for example, one capable of catalysing combustion of a combustible gas. By way of example a thermal imaging camera may be used to sense the temperature range.
Description
Sensing
The present invention relates to sensing and more particularly to sensing finding application in the detection of gases (e.g. combustible gases).
According to the present invention there is provided a method for the detection of a gas which includes contacting the gas with a surface said surface having a region coated with a material which is capable of catalysing a reaction involving the gas when the gas is in the presence of the material such that a temperature change is produced, and sensing the temperature change.
In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention there is provided a method for the detection of a combustible gas which includes contacting the gas with a surface said surface having a region coated with a material which is capable of catalysing combustion of the combustible gas when the combustible gas is in the presence of the material such that a temperature change is produced, and measuring the temperature change.
In the circumstances where the material catalyses the combustion of a combustible gas, the temperature change will generally be a temperature rise.
Temperature change produced in accordance with the present invention may be detected by any suitable means.
For example, a thermal imaging camera may be used to sense the temperature change produced by the catalysed reaction.
A method in accordance with the present invention may be used to detect a selected gas at low concentration, for example, at low concentration in air.
Examples of gases which may be detected in air by a method in accordance with the present invention are hydrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide.
Examples of materials capable of catalysing the combustion of gases are precious metal catalysts such as platinum and palladium and mixtures thereof.
The material may include a support for the catalyst e.g. tin oxide - and the catalyst may be finely divided.
It will be understood that the surface may be scanned by a thermal imaging camera and a change in temperature occuring as a result of the catalysed reaction may thereby LG sensed.
A thermal imagine camera may be used in accordance with one embodiment of the invention to scan an array of surfaces treated with regions of material capable of catalysing a reaction involving a gas.

A method as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the gas to be detected is a combustible gas said method including contacting the gas with a surface said surface having a region coated with a material which is capable of catalysing combustion of the combustible gas when the combustible gas is in the presence of the material such that a temperature change is produced, and measuring the temperature- change.
