Abstract

A flow restriction device comprises a cup-shaped member 11 locatable on the valve seat 12 of a tap body 10, which cup-shaped member accommodates a valve member 14 supporting a replaceable valve washer 15. The valve member 14 has a downwardly extending stem 16 which is engageable in an inlet opening 17 in the base of the cup-shaped member 11, the relative sizes of the valve stem 16 and the aperture 17 defining the flow cross section of the valve inlet opening. A plurality of lateral outlet apertures are provided in the side walls of the restrictor member 11. In the off position of the valve member, the washer 15 is pressed against the inlet opening 17 to shut off liquid flow, whilst when the tap is opened, the valve member is lifted clear of the inlet opening 17 and the outlet openings 18 to allow flow through the restrictor member at a predetermined rate in accordance with the flow cross section of the inlet opening and the flow cross section and number of outlet openings. <IMAGE>

Description

WLuS RESTrICTIC'\J DEDI5L FCR A TAP The present invention relates to a flow restriction device for domestic taps for reducing the flow of water through the tap and effecting economies on the use of taps, particularly in public buildings, to thereby reduce wastage of water.
In general, the accepted manner of restricting flow rate through a domestic tap is to reduce the flow crosssection of the water supply pipe to the tap by introducing a member into the flow passage. Such a device reduces the flow cross-section by an amount determined by the oiameter of the member, the flow cross-section being an annular passage defined between the cylindrical inlet pipe and the cylindrical restrictor member. However, such a device requires regular servicing in oroer to ensure that the correct size of flow cross-section is maintained for optimum performance.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved flow restriction device for use with domestic taps, which requires the minimum of maintenance and which may serve as a replacement for an existing valve member and which does not require an insert member to project into the inlet opening to reduce the flow cross-section.
According to the present invention there is provided a flow restriction device for taps comprising a cup-shaped restrictor member locatable on the valve seat of a tap over the inlet opening thereof and a valve member locatable in said cup-shaped restrictor member, wherein in the open position of the valve, liquid may flow in through an aperture provided in the base of the cup-shaped member and out through lateral openings in the sice walls cf tne cup-shapeo member into the outlet opening of the tap, in use, anc wherein in the closed position of the valve, the valve member is biaseo against the base of the cup-shaped restrictor to seal off the inlet and outlet openings.
The relative sizes of the restrictor member and valve member and the apertures provided in the restrictor member can be sized appropriately to determine the desired flow rate, and further, the number of apertures provided both in the side walls and the base may be altered as required to achieve such desireo flow rate.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, a cutaway view of a tas is shown in wnich a flow restrictor device accordinc to the present invention is shown in position.
A tap booty 1 of conventional resign is shown in which a flow restrictor member 11 is positioned so as to sit on the valve seat 12 of the tap to thereby close tne inlet opening of the water inlet 13. The restrictor member 11 is cup-shaped and receives a valve member 14 which carries a replaceable valve washer 15. Tne valve member 14 is a oisc-shaped member having a downwardly extending stem 16, which is engageable in an aperture 17 in the base of the restrictor member 11 so as to guide the valve member therein. When the valve member 14 is depressed by operation of the valve to close the tap, the valve member 15 is brought into engagement with the base of the restrictor member 11 and closes off the base aperture 17 and one or more lateral apertures 16 provided in the side walls of the restrictor member 11. When the tap is opened, the valve member is raised to the position shown in the drawing by the pressure of water in the inlet 13 so that the water may flow into the lower portion of the cup-shaped restrictor member 11 through the aperture 17 ano then flow out through the apertures 16 into the tap outlet.
The device according to the present invention is a direct replacement for existing valve members for taps, which would normally be accommodated in a blind bore provided in the base of the actuating stem 20 of the tap, and being of a relatively simple nature is readily replaceable and renewable at very low cost, although it should only be necessary to review the valve washer 15 periodically when such becomes worn.
As will be appreciated, the flow restriction member can be provided with any required number and sizes of apertures to provide the desired flow rate through the tap when fully open and the range of different sizes of apertures could be provided to enable the user to select the oesired flow rate at his own preference if required.
It will be appreciated that the invention of the present application provide a simple and inexpensive device for providing flow restriction in taps with the minimum of any requirement for servicing.
