Description

SPECIFICATION Gate gudgeon This invention relates to a gate gudgeon, and in particular a gate gudgeon for connection to a gate post, so that a gate can be mounted relative to said post.
Up until this time, various gudgeons have been provided for mounting gates, which have basically involved the attachment of a mounting shaft to a gate post, in a straight forward manner. For example up until this time, an elongate shaft has been passed through a bore or hole in a gate post and secured such as by nuts and the like, so that at one side of the gate an upright is exposed, this upright being spaced apart from the surface of the post and enabling a gate hinge or at least part of the gate to be attached thereto.
Thus, the gate is mounted in an appropriate manner to the post. Such arrangements used up until this time have basically been of a substantially "L" shaped configuration, with the elongate shaft passing through the gate post and the foot of the "L" extending upwardly as an upright for attachment or engagement with at least part of a gate.
These arrangements have brought about certain problems, in that the engagement of the elongate shaft to and through a post has meant that the shaft lends itself to loosening so that it may move or rotate within for example the bore or hole passing through the post. Thus, when for example the elongate shaft is secured through a hole in the gatepost by nuts, these will loosen after a period of time and the elongate shaft will be able to move or rotate within the bore or hole. This in turn will cause the mounting member or upright to loosen and move, which causes inefficiency in the operation of the gate; in some cases movement within and relative to the gate post can be such that the opening and closing of the gate can be severely hampered.
The present invention sets out to overcome or at least minimise these problems.
It is an object of this invention to provide a straight forward and efficient gate gudgeon.
Other objects of this invention will be apparent from the following description.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a gate gudgeon including: an elongate locating shaft adapted to be engaged with a post; a mounting member being provided adjacent one end of said shaft; a locking shaft being spaced apart from said locating shaft and being adapted in use to at least partially engage with said post.
The invention will now be described by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a gate gudgeon according to one form of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a partially exposed side view of a gate gudgeon of the present invention engaged within a gate post.
In the preferred form of the present invention the gate gudgeon is formed of a metal or stainless steel material, although this is by way of example only. The gate gudgeon is preferably formed of a unitary member although it can if desired by constructed of separate members connected together in some appropriate manner. For example by welding and the like.
The gudgeon 1 includes a first elongate locating shaft 2, which is preferably screw threaded on its outer surface, for at least part of the length thereof. At one end of the elongate locating shaft, there is provided an upwardly extending mounting member 3, which extends upwardly and outwardly from the locating shaft 2. For example at substantially right angles thereto. Preferably an outwardly extending flange or abutment member 4 is provided part way down the mounting member 3 and between a join between the locating shaft 2 and the mounting member 3.
The gate gudgeon 1 of the present invention also includes a locking shaft 5 which is preferably substantially elongate in formation and which is spaced apart from and preferably substantially parallel to, the locating shaft 2.
The locking shaft 5 is preferably of a lesser length than the locating shaft 2, although this is by way of example only. If desired they can be of the same or similar lengths.
In the preferred form of the invention as shown in the accompanying drawings, the locking shaft 5 is provided so as to be spaced apart below and substantially parallel to, the elongate locating shaft 2. This is by way of example only however, and the locking shaft 5 can be provided above the locating shaft 2 if desired. Alternatively, more than one locking shaft 5 can be provided if desired.
In the preferred form of the invention as shown in the accompanying drawings, the free or distal end of the locating shaft 2 leads into a substantially "L" shaped member, part of which extends outwardly from one side of the locating shaft 2, to form the mounting member 3, while the other portion firstly extends downwardly as at 6 so as to be substantially co-axial with the mounting member 3. The joint 6 then extends outwardly and away from the longitudinal axis of the mounting member 3, so as to extend substantially parallel to (and spaced apart from) the locating shaft 2.
The locking shaft 5 is preferably of a lesser length than the locating shaft 2.
We refer now to Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
In use, a hole or bore 7 is formed passing through a post 8 for example a gate post.
The post 8 can be formed of any appropriate material, such as wood, or alternatively con crete and the like. If the post is formed of some castable or mouldable material such as concrete, the bore or bores can be moulded into the post.
In the form of the invention as shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, the gate gudgeon 1 is attached to a lower portion of the gate post 8 so as to mount a lower portion 10 of a gate. For example, the mounting member 3 is adapted to engage with appropriate gate mounting means; for example a lower portion of a side tubular member 11 of a tubular gate. This is by way of example only.
The elongate locating shaft 2 is passed through the bore 7 in the post, with nuts 12 being secured at each end thereof. A further and at least partial bore or hole 15 is provided extending into the post 8, preferably spaced apart from and below the main bore 7. Into this bore 15 is passed the locking shaft 5, which then prevents movement and rotation of the elongate shaft 2 (and the mounting member 3 attached thereto) relative to the post 8. The bolts 12 are tightened towards each other to securely locate the gudgeon in position, whereby the mounting member 3 will point upwardly to locate the gate. As indicated, the locking shaft 5 is at least partially located within the second bore 15 in the post 8, this serving to securely locate the gudgeon in position. When the tubular side member 11 of a gate is fitted or mounted over the mounting member 3, the lower surface thereof will be held in position and substantially abut against an upper surface of the flange 4. The arrangement shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings is shown by way of example only. If desired, more than one locking shaft 5 may be provided. Alternatively, if desired, the locking shaft 5 could be provided above the locating shaft 2. The locking shaft 5, is described by way of example only, as being substantially parallel to the locating shaft 2. This is by way of example only.
The invention has been described by way of example only and improvements and modifications may be made to the invention without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
