Abstract

A container has a base portion (6) and a lid portion (4), the portions having interengaging rims, with one portion having a series of engagement members (18) arranged to grip the rim of the other portion. The lid (4) may have the series of engagement members in the form internal projections (16, 18), arranged in a spaced apart and staggered formation, so that one engagement member (18) engages the inside of the rim of the base (2), and a next adjacent engagement member (16) engages with the outside of the rim of the base (2). The lid also has catches (20) which engage with the base (4). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Container The present invention relates to a container and particularly, though not exclusively to a two-part container having a base part and a lid part.
It is customary to display various types of goods in containers which allow a potential customer to see those goods before purchase. Usuallythese containers have at least one part made oftranslucent plastics material. For marketing in the self-service of store, these containers, or packages, are often heat sealed to prevent accidental opening. This is found to create a problem when the customer has purchased the goods, because such packages are often difficult to open purposely.
The invention seeks to provide a containerwhich allows ready and secure attachment of its component parts, and yet which can be readily opened when desired.
According to the invention there is provided a container comprising a base portion and a lid portion, the portions having interengaging rims, with one portion having a series of engagement members arranged to grip the rim ofthe other portion.
Preferablytheseries of engagement members engage the rim alternately on the inside and outside ofthe rim, so that cooperatively the rim of the base portion is gripped.
Preferably the lid has the series of engagement members in the form internal projection, arranged in a spaced apart and staggered formation, so that one engagement member engages the inside of the rim ofthe base, and a next adjacent engagement member engages with the outside of the rim ofthe base.
In a preferredform the lid has catcheswhich engage with the base.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is now described by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure lisa side elevation of a container according to the embodiment ofthe invention, Figure2 is an end elevation ofthe container of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a section view on the line Ill-Ill of Figure 1,and Figure4 is a section view on the line IV-IV of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings the container ofthe preferred embodiment generally comprises a base member 2 and a lid portion 4. The base member 2 is, in this exemplary embodiment, made of card which lends itself to the printing of decoration, description, trade marks, instructions, etc. thereon. It may, of course, be made of any other material suitable to its contents and by any method of manufacture.
As seen most clearly in the large scale views of Figures3 and 4, the base member2 is generally rectangular, with upstanding side walls 6 which have a rim 8formed by turning the top portion of the wall 6 backupon itself. The turned-back piece may be fixed in its position by an adhesive. Theturned-back rim 8 forms a shoulder9 on the sidewall 6.
The rectangular lid portion 4 has a rim 14, and a series of upstanding translucent portions 1 Oto enable ready viewing of the goods by the customer.
Askirt 12 depends from the rim 14. Spaced apart along the long side ofthe rim 14 are a number of engagement members 16,20. These engagement members are divided into inner engagement members 18 and outer engagement members 16.
The inner engagement members 18 are formed as elongate dimples or depression in the rim 14, while the outer engagement members 16 are formed as elongate depressions in the skirt 12 at its junction with the rim 14. On each long side of the top or lid 4 there aretwo outer engagement members and one innerengagement member. The inner and outer engagement members are generally arranged in a staggered formation with the inner engagement members in alignment and laterally spaced from the outer engagement member of that side of the lid.
Each end of the lid has an engagement member 24 of similarform to the inner engagement members 18 on the sides of the rim of the lid.
Towards each end of each long side of the lid, the skirt 8 is provided with a catch member 20. Each catch member 20 is formed as an inward depression the skirt 8, to provide a claw face 22 which faces upwards inside the lid, and an outwardly and downwardly sloping face 23.
In use, the rim 14 rests on the rim 8 ofthe base 2, with the skirt 12 overlapping the rim 8 and sidewall 6 ofthe base part 2 ofthe container. To secure the lid to the base portion, the series of engagement members 16,20, cooperate to grip the rim 8 ofthe base 2. Thus, outer engagement members 16 engage with the outerface 8a ofthe rim 8, and inner engagement members 18 engage with the inside 8b ofthe rim 8.
Further claw faces 22 of catches 20 engage with the shoulder9formed by the bottom edge ofthe turned-back rim 8 of the wall 6. The engagement members 24 at each end wall of the skirt engage the inside of the rim 8.
Although the container illustrated shows the engagement members in one particular configuration, they need not necessarily be so, for example, the arrangement and number of engagement members 16,18,20 may be changed, e.g. they may be closertogetherthan as shown, or there may be more than illustrated.
Further,turned-backthe rim 8 may be dispensed with and a suitable outwardly extending rib formed in appropriate positions on the wall 6 to replacethe shoulder 9, or, the wall 6may be formed with a slot into which the catch 20 may be engaged to have a latching effect.
The container need not of course be of rectangular form in plan as illustrated but may be of any desired shape, e.g. round, polygonal or Dee-shaped. This lid may not necessarily be formed as individually raised portions, but could be flat and level with the top or the base.
It has been found that the container according to the embodiment ofthe invention provides a secure package which, whilst capable of standing up to normal supermarkettype of handling without coming apart, is readily openable when it is desired so to do.

Claims (4)

1. A container comprising a base portion and a lid portion, the portions having interengaging rims, with one portion having a series of engagement members arranged to grip the rim ofthe other portion.
2. A container as claimed in claim 1, wherein the seriesofengagementmembersengagethe rim alternately on the inside and outside ofthe rim, so that cooperatively the rim of the other portion is gripped.
3. Acontainerasclaimedinclaiml orclaim2, wherein the lid has the series of engagement members in the form internal projections, arranged in a spaced apart and staggered formation, so that one engagement member engages the inside ofthe rim ofthe base, and a nextadjacentengagement member engages with the outside of the rim ofthe base.
4. A container as claimed in claim 1,2or3, wherein the lid has catches which engage with the base.
