Description
SPECIFICATION
Deck plates
This invention relates to deck plates which are suitable for use as floor coverings in e.g.
storehouses and car-parking buildings, for the covering of waterways, and as the surface covering of roads and runways.
Various improvements have been made to the deck plates of the prior art in an effort two reducethe weight-of the individual deck plate and to make it possible for a plurality of deck plates to be joined together. However, in the prior art, no substantial attempts or improvements have been made to reinforce the deck plate against bending stress and shearing force, orto provide simple means ofjoining deck plates together, orto provide an anti-skidding feature to the outer surface ofthe deck plate.
When it is intended to use the deck plate as the surface covering of a runway for airplanes, the deck plate will inevitably be subjectto great impactforces.
In such application, reinforcing the deck plate against bending stress and shearing force is essential and must be considered carefully. In an application where a plurality of deck plates are used as the makeshift road surface or covering at road repairing sites, it is preferred thatthese deck plates can be joined together in a simple and easy manner.
On the other hand, if the deck plates are to be utilized the floor material or covering in a car-parking building where the skidding of vehicles would bea serious problem, it is absolutely essential that the deck plate has an anti-skidding feature on its outer surface.
Accordingly, it is an object ofthis invention to provide a new and novel deck plate which has reinforced strength against bending stress and shearing force without increasing its total weight.
It is also an object ofthis invention to provide a new and novel deckplatewhich has simple means for joining a plurality of such plates together.
It is yet a further object of this invention to provide a new and novel deck plate which has an anti-skid outer surface.
In order to achieve the above-mentioned objects, the invention provides a deck plate comprising a deck plate member, downwardly extending edge extensions formed along the lateral and longitudinal edges of said deck plate member, a plurality of elongate openings with bent down rims provided throughout said deck plate member spaced a predetermined distance away from one another in lateral and longitudinal directions, and a plurality of circular openings with upwardly bent rims provided in said deck plate member between said adjacent elongate openings, said downwardly extending edge extension along one lateral edge of said deck plate member having an inwardly bent end portion and said downwardly extending edge extension along the other lateral edge of said deck plate member having an outwardly bent end portion with its foremost end projecting upward.
With a deck plate ofthe latter type of construction, the downwardly bent edges extensions along the lateral and longitudinal edges and the bent down rims ofthe elongate openings effectively give the deck plates improved strength against bending stress. The inwardly and outwardly bent end portions of the lateral edge extensions provide the deck plate with both the simple means for joining a plurality of deck plates together and the means to make the deck plates withstand the shearing force applied thereto when deck plates are joined together.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lisa plan view of a preferred embodiment of the deck plate in accordance with the invention;
Figure2 is a cross-section on the line A-A of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of part of the view of
Figure 2; Figure 4 is a cross-section on the line B-B of Figure 2;and Figure 5is an enlarged view of part ofthe view of
Figure 4.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the preferred deck plate comprises a deck plate member or piece 1 generally made of sheet metal and having a plurality of elongate openings or apertures cut therein. The elongate openings 4 are spaced over the entire deck plate member 1 at predetermined distances from each other in both the lateral and longitudinal directions ofthe deck plate member 1.
The outer peripheral edge of the deck plate member 1 is bent downward to form downwardly extending bent edges 2 and 3 along the lateral and longitudinal edges of the deck plate member 1 respectively. Also provided in the deck plate member 1 are a plurality of circular holes oropenings 6 at positions betweenthe adjacent elongate openings 4. That portion ofthe deck plate member 1 around each circular hole 6 i.e.
the perimeter of the circular hole 6, isturned upward to provide an upwardly extending tim portion 5.
As shown in Figure 2, the end portion ofthefront lateral edge 2 is bent inwardly to form an inwardly extending end portion 7, while the end portion of the rear lateral edge 2 is bent outwardly to form an outwardly extending end portion 9 with its foremost end 8 slightly projecting upward. Aswith the circular openings 4 are turned inward thereby to provide an inwardly extending tim 10. According to the invention, it is preferred to make the lateral rim portions of each inwardly extending rim 10 slant at an angle of up to 5" with respect to the vertical as indicated by the reference letterAin Figure 3.
Likewise, the longitudinal rim portions of the inwardly extending rim 10 preferably slant at an angle of 45 with respect to the vertical as indicated by the reference letter B in Figure 5. The upwardly extending rim 5 of the circular openings 6 also slant atan angle of upto 50with respectto the vertical as shown by the reference letter C in Figure 3, and the top end ofthe rim5isformed so asto curveslightly.
It is to be pointed out here that a plurality of elongate reinforcing beams 11 may preferably be provided on the inner surface of the deck plate member 1 so that they extend longitudinally in parallel to the bent edge 3 between adjacent arrays oftheelongated openings 4.
The deck plate of this invention, constructed as described hereinabove, has been strengthend against bending stress due to the pressure of the lateral and longitudinal bent edges 2,3 of the deck plate member 1 and the inwardly extending rim 10 of the openings 4. Thus, the bending and deflection of the deck plate do not occurwhen the deck plate is used as the floor material of a storehouse and car-parking building. A plurality of the deck plates according to the invention can easily be joined together by simply engaging the inwardly extending end portion 7 of one deck plate with the outwardly extending end portion 9 of another deck plate. In addition, when two deck plates are joined together in this manner, the inwardly extending end portion 7 of one deck palte engages with the outwardly extending end portion 9 of the other deck plate over a broad contact area. This is highly effective in protecting the deck plates against shearing force which is applied to each deck plate by another deck plate when a plurality of deck plates are joined together. Moreover, the plurality of circular holes 6 with upwardly extending rims 7 between adjacent elongated openings 4 provide the deck plate of the invention with the anti-skid surface. Therefore, the deck plate ofthe invention can safely be used even as the floor material of a car-parking building with no possibility of vehicles skidding on the floor.
