Abstract
A single use disposable dry cloth comprises a high wet strength non-woven material impregnated to a substantially constant degree over its surface with a detergent composition and optionally other agents, and presented dry to a user to enable a predetermined amount of detergent, dependant on the area of non-woven material selected for use, to be added to clothes washing water. The material may be in a sheet or roll provided with perforations to define areas of predetermined detergent dosage.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Non-woven article
The present invention relates to a disposable non-woven article for use in washing clothes, which term shall hereinafter be taken to include household linen, towels and such other fabric articles as are commonly washed to render them clean.
Liquid and powder detergents are well known for use for washing clothes. These are generally added in varying quantities to the water in which the clothes are to be washed, either by hand or by machine. These presentations of the cleansing detergent have disadvantages. They are messy and cumbersome to use, and it is difficult to obtain a repeatable unit dose of detergent in general use, although complex dosing equipment for use in industrial scale washing machines are well known. In general, however, liquid and powder detergents are messy and wasteful in storage and use.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an article for use in washing clothes which overcomes the above disadvantages and which can be used to provide a predetermined dose of detergent in a convenient and clean manner.
It has been found that, in storage, articles according to the present invention also occupy up to 25% less volume then conventional liquid or powder detergent compositions of similar performance.
According to the present invention there is provided a single use disposable dry cloth comprising a high wet strength non-woven material impregnated with- a detergent composition and optionally other agents, and presented dry to a user to enable a predetermined amount of detergent to be added to clothes washing water.
Preferably the non-woven material is impregnated to a substantially constant degree over its surface and the amount of detergent will depend on the area of non-woven material selected for use.
The material may be a sheet or roll provided with perforations or the like to define a plurality of areas of predetermined detergent dosage, whereby one or more areas may be used to provide a correct amount for the amount of clothes to be cleaned.
The non-woven material is preferably a high wet strength non-woven material of basis weight between 100 grams per m2 and 300 grams per m2 (aithough non-wovens of basis weight outside this range are not excluded). Advantageously the material is of such low density that the large volume between the fibres of the non-woven material is sufficient to hold the detergent composition. Such non-wovens are not necessarily absorbent in the sense that the fibres of the non-woven are capable of absorbing the detergent composition themselves (although non-wovens that consist in whole or in part of such fibres are not excluded) since many of the nonwovens which can be used consist wholly of non-absorbent fibres.
The non-woven material is advantageously of sufficient wet strength to retain its integrity during the entire washing process. This will avoid deposition of loose fibres on the clothes being washed.
The preferred non-woven materials are adapted to hold between 1000 ml and 4000 ml of liquid per m2 of non-woven, most advantageously in the range of 2000 ml to 4000 ml of liquid per m2.
In a preferred embodiment the non-woven is impregnated with a liquid detergent composition and then allowed to dry to provide the dry impregnated cloth. The impregnation and drying may be carried out in a manner of ways which will be known to those skilled in the art of impregnation, but particularly advantageous is the 'dip-squeeze' method of impregnation.
The detergent composition preferably used comprises any one or more of anionic and nonionic surfactants, alkaline builders, brighteners, perfumes, biologically active materials and such other materials as are used in clothes washing detergent compositions. The detergent composition is liquid when applied to the non-woven and may be an aqueous composition wherein the water content is in the range of 1% to 70% and preferably in the range of 20% to 50%. The detergent composition may have a wide range of viscosities which can be altered if desired by viscosity modifiers to suit the non-woven substrate used and the impregnation method. Compositions of low viscosity yet which have low water contents are particularly advantageous as they may easily be impregnated into the non-woven substrate but have relatively little water to be removed in the drying process.
Alternative detergent compositions which could be used have the surfactants and any other materials in the composition carried in a solvent other than water. This may be, for example, volatile alcohol which could be more easily removed in the drying process. Many such nonaqueous solvents can be envisaged.
Other detergent compositions may be used, e.g. those that comprise materials that are solid at ambient temperature but become liquid at elevated temperature. In the same way that wax coatings are applied at elevated temperature and then ailowed to solidify by cooling, such compositions may be used for impregnation without a drying stage as such-merely a cooling stage.
Claims (13)
1. A single use disposable dry cloth comprising a high wet strength non-woven material impregnated to a substantially constant degree over its surface with a detergent composition and optionally other agents; and presented dry to.a user to enable a predetermined amount of detergent, dependant-on the area of non-woven material selected for use, to-be added to clothes washing waster.
2. A cloth as claimed in claim 1, wherein the material is a-sheet or roll provided with perforations or the like to define a plurality of areas of predetermined detergent dosage, whereby one or more areas may be used to provide a correct amount for the amount of clothes to be cleaned.
3. A cloth as claimed in either claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the non-woven material is a high wet strength non-woven material of basis weight between 100 grams per m2 and 300 grams per m2.
4. A cloth as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the material is of such low density that the large volume between the fibres of the non-woven material is sufficient to hold the detergent composition.
5. A cloth as claimed in claim 4, wherein the material is adapted to hold between 1000 ml and 4000 ml of liquid per m2 of non-woven.
