Abstract

A hand held shower spray comprising a spray head 11 and a hand operated valve 12. The valve is connected to a mixer tap by means of a flexible hose 14. The valve 12 is opened manually by means of a handle 29 which can be locked in the open position by means of a trigger 36. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hand held shower spray head The present invention relates to bathroom shower spray heads, in particular, hand held shower spray heads.
In domestic bathrooms etc., shower and mixer tap control valves are generally used to control the pressure and temperature of the relevant spray emitted from the head, the desired temperature being achieved by mixing hot and cold water. If the need arises to stop the flow of water on a temporary basis, the desired temperature is lost, pa rticularly with the mixertap and shower head.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a means of controlling the waterflowto a shower head in such a waythatthe flow can be interrupted without losing the preselected pressure and temperature.
According to the present invention there is provided a shower spray apparatus for use in connection with a mixed supply of hot and cold water, comprising a spray head and a hand operated on/offflow control valve located between the mixed watersupply and the spray head.
This allows the waterflowto be controlled: i.e.
switched on oroff, withoutthe desired temperature being affected.
The control valve may be directly connected to or integral with the spray head. Preferably the control valve incorporates a spring loaded valve member biased towards the valve closed position by a spring.
Preferably, the valve member is operated by a hand lever arranged to open the valve when gripped towards the spray head. Thus, effectively, the on/off control valve would be operated by a spring loaded lever, which returns to the closed position when released.
If a continuous flow of water is desired the valve may include a locking device arranged to lock the hand lever in the open position.
The spray head and hand lever may be cranked or generally straight.
The invention also extends to a bathroom shower assembly comprising a mixer tap connected to separate sources of hot and cold water, a spray head for delivering a spray of water, a hand operated on/off flow control valve connected to the spray head, and a flexible hose connecting the flow control valve to the mixer tap.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways and some specific embodiments will now be described byway of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure lisa perspective view of a shower spray apparatus in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation ofthe flow control valve of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line A-A in Figure 2; and Figure 4 is a plan view of the flow control valve shown in Figure 2.
The shower spray apparatus comprises a hand-held spray head 11 and a flow control valve 12, connected tothesprayhead 11 bymeansofa running nut13.A flexible hose 14connectsthevalve 12to asupplyof water such asa hot and cold mixertap (not shown).
The spray head 11 comprises a hollow body 16 having an opening closed buy a perforated plate 17 through which water issues as a spray in use.
The valve 12 comprises a housing 18 having an inlet 19 and an outlet 21 connected bya central bore 22 and a pairofarcuate slots 23, one on either side of the bore 22. A shaft 24 is slidably located within the bore 22. At the inlet end, the shaft has a valve member 25 which is located within the inlet 19 and is large enough to cover the slots 23. Atthe outlet end, the shaft has a head 26.
A compression spring 27 acting between the head 26 and the inside of the housing urgestheshaftinthe downstream direction so that the slots 23 are normally closed bythe valve member 25.
The housing 18 includesa pairofparallelflanges28 between which an actuating handle 29 is pivotally mounted at 30. The housing 18 includes an aperture 31 between the flanges 28 which communicates with the bore 22, thus exposing the shaft 24. The shaft 24, in the region of the aperture 31, itself has an opening 32. The handle 29 has a spigot 33 which is received in the opening 32. The valve 12 is operated by moving the handle 29 aboutthe pivot30 inthe direction ofthe arrowtowardsthe housing 18 and spray head 1 This causes the spigot33 to move the shaft 24 againstthe force of the spring 27, thus lifting the valve member 25 from the slots 23.The shaft 24 is sealed within the bore 22 by means of seals 34 and so water under pressure supplied to the inlet 19travels along the slots 23 and enters the spray head 11 via the outlet 21.
When the handle 29 is released, the spring 27 moves the shaft 24 back (assisted by the water pressure) and thevalve member25closestheslots23.
The handle 29 is providedwith a slot 35 and one of the flanges 28 has a trigger 36. If it is required to lock the valve 12 open in order to achieve a constant flow, thetrigger36 is moved so as to engage the slot 35, thus preventing the handle 29 from moving. To release the handle 29, the trigger 36 issimply disengaged from the slot 35.
In the illustrated embodiment, both the spray head 11 and handle 29 are cranked. However, they might both be generally straight, as shown, for example in broken lines in Figure 2.
Also, in the illustrated embodiment, the spray head 11 and valve 12 are separate but connected; it will be appreciated that in an alternative embodiment, the valve might be incorporated in the spray head to form an integral handset.
