Abstract

An analytical sample rack (1) for use in analytical procedures comprising a plurality of sample ports (2) that are open only at the top and (a) at least one outer sample port (4) that is open at the top and at the side, the outer sample port (4) being adapted to hold a sample cell having lateral entrance and exit arms extending from the same side of the cell, or (b) at least one sample port, preferably outer sample port, that is open at the top and at the bottom, the sample port being adapted to hold a sample cell having vertical entrance and exit arms extending from the bottom of the cell. The analytical sample rack (1) is especially adapted for use in automated analytical procedures and is compatible with a flow through method of sampling. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Analytical sample rack The present invention relates to an analytical sample rack for use in analytical procedures.
Automated analytical procedures will generally require a flow-through manner of operation. At present there are no analytical racks that are compatible with such flow through techniques.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an analytical sample rack that is compatible with a flow-through method of sampling and that is therefore adapted for use in automated analytical procedures.
Other objects and adavantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description thereof.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an analytical sample rack comprising a plurality of sample ports that are open only at the top and at least one outer sample port that is open at the top and at the side, the outer sample port being adapted to hold a sample cell having lateral entrance and exit arms extending from the same side of the cell.
Preferably, this analytical sample rack has at least 5, especially 10 to 20, outer sample ports open at the top and at the side.
In an automated analytical procedure, this analytical sample rack is preferably used in conjunction with at least one sample cell having lateral entrance and exit arms extending from the same side of the sample cell.
As an alternative to the above sample rack, there is also provided an analytical sample rack comprising a plurality of sample ports that are open only at the top and at least one sample port that is open at the top and at the bottom, the sample port being adapted to hold a sample cell having vertical entrance and exit arms extending from the bottom of the cell.
Preferably the sample port is an outer sample port that is open at the top and at the bottom. The analytical sample rack has, in preferred embodiments of the present invention, at least 5, especially 10 to 20, sample ports open at the top and at the bottom.
In an automated analytical procedure, this analytical sample rack is preferably used in conjunction with at least one sample cell having vertical entrance and exit arms extending from the bottom of the cell.
Analytical sample racks according to this invention, whether they have at least one sample port that is open at the side and/or that is open at the bottom, are distinguished from prior art analytical racks by allowing a flowthrough method of sampling and thereby being adapted for use in automated analytical procedures.
An analytical sample rack according to the present invention will now be described by way of example only with particular reference to the Figures in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an analytical sample rack according to this invention, and Fig. 2 is an exploded sectional view of an analytical sample cell that is particularly adapted for use in the analytical sample rack of Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1, an analytical sample rack according to the present invention is shown generally at 1. The rack (1) has five rows of open-topped sample ports (2) and an outer row (3) of sample ports (4) that are open both at the top and at the side.
Referring to Fig. 2, a sample cell for use in conjunction with the sample rack of Fig. 1 is shown generally at 10. The cell (10) has a body (11) with an open topped neck (12) and lateral entrance (13) and exit (14) arms. The arms (13, 14) extend from the same side of the body (11) of the cell (10). A screw cap (15) is adapted to screw onto the neck (12) of the cell's body (11). The neck (12) is sealed by a penetrable membrane (16) that fits on the top of the neck (12) and that is kept in position by the screw cap (15).
In use, sample cells (10) having lateral entrance (13) and exit (14) arms are placed in the outer sample ports (4) of the rack (1).
Solutions/suspensions to be sampled are passed continuously into and out of the cells (via the entrance (13) and exit (14) arms).
When a particular solution/suspension is to be analysed, for example, by chromatography, a sample is taken from the appropriate sample cell (10) in an outer sample port (4) by a hypodermic syringe (through the penetrable membrane, 16). The sample taken may be analysed immediately, for example, by chromatography or may be placed in a standard sample cell placed in an open-topped sample port (2) of the rack (1) for later analysis.
1. An analytical sample rack comprising a plurality of sample ports that are open only at the top and at least one outer sample port that is open at the top and at the side, the outer sample port being adapted to hold a sample cell having lateral entrance and exit arms extending from the same side of the cell.
2. A rack according to claim 1 having at least 5 outer sample ports that are open at the top and at the side.
3. A rack according to claim 2 having 10 to 20 sample ports that are open at the top and at the side.
4. An analytical sample rack comprising a plurality of sample ports that are open at the top and at least one sample port that is open at the top and at the bottom, the sample port being adapted to hold a sample cell having vertical entrance and exit arms extending from
