Abstract

A covering for a duvet or continental quilt includes a rectangular envelope (2) having secured on one face three flaps (12, 14 and 16). Each flap (12, 14 and 16) projects beyond a corresponding one of the sides of the envelope (2) so that when the envelope is positioned on a bed each flap can be tucked between the mattress and the base. In this way the envelope is secured to the bed and will not tend to slip off the bed under the movement of the occupant. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Bed coverings The present invention relates to bed coverings of the type sometimes called continental quilts or duvet coverings.
Continential quilts or duvets comprise an inner sack or bag containing feathers or some other thermally insulating material, and a removable outer covering of cotton or a synthetic material.
Such duvets or continental quilts when placed loosely on a bed have a tendency to slip off the bed as a result of the occupant of the bed turning during sleep.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a bed covering which does not readily slip off the bed.
According to the present invention there is provided a covering for a duvet or continental quilt comprising an envelope having secured on one face thereof at least one flap located adjacent one side and extending parallel to said one side, the flap being capable of being tucked in between the base and the mattress of a bed when the covering containing the duvet is positioned on the bed to cover the mattress.
Preferably said face is provided with three flaps each spaced from, and extending parallel to, a respective one of three sides of the face.
Instead each flap may comprise a series of spaced flap elements.
Advantageously said flaps are sewn on to said face. Instead the flaps may be secured to said face by Velcro type fastenings. Preferably the adjacent flaps are joined to form a continuous flap extending around three sides of the face.
Advantageously the said continuous flap is provided with an elasticated edging to act in the manner of a fitted sheet.
Instead of said flaps being tucked between the base and mattress they can be secured to the side of the base or mattress by Velcro type fastening means.
According to the present invention there is further provided a covering for a duvet or continental quilt comprising an envelope having four sides and a plurality of flaps extending from one to three of said sides to an extent sufficient to allow the flaps to be tucked between the mattress and the base of a bed when the envelope is aligned on top of a mattress resting on a base.
A duvet or quilt covering embodyng the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagramatic drawing in which: Figure 1 is an underpian view of one form of the covering; and Figure 2 is an underplan view of another form of the covering.
As shown the main part of the covering comprises an elongate envelope 2 which can accommodate a quilt or duvet. One end side 4 of the envelope is provided with an opening through which the duvet or quilt can be inserted. Opposite faces of the opening are lined with complementary strips of Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) to imprison the quilt or duvet within the envelope.
Flaps 12, 14 and 16 of material are secured (for example by stitching) adjacent the remaining three sides respectively 6, 8 and 10 of the covering 2. Each flap 12, 14 and 16 is spaced from its corresponding side by a predetermined distance.
Instead of the flaps being secured by stitching they can be secured by means of mating Velcro strips.
In use the covering containing the quilt or duvet is draped over a bed (not shown) comprising a mattress resting on a base so that the flaps 12, 14 and 16 hang down along three sides of the bed. Each flap is then tucked in between the base and the mattress and this secures the duvet or quilt in place so that it will not shift even with a restless sleeper.
Each flap 12, 14 and 16 is spaced from a corresponding side by a distance sufficient that when in use the overhang provided by the duvet or quilt will hide the tucked-in flaps from view.
Instead of tucking the flaps between the mattress and base they can be secured to the base or the mattress by Velcro (Registered Trade Mark) fasteners.
The three flaps 12, 16 and 14 can be joined together to form, or be replaced by, a continuous flap which then allows the covering to be tucked in at two corners as well as three sides.
The outer periphery of the continuous flap may be threaded with an elastic filament to act in the manner of a fitted sheet.
In yet another modification each flap 12, 14 and 16 may take the form of a series of spaced flap elements 12A, 14A and 16A as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 2 parts similar to those in Fig. 1 are similarly referenced.
While it is advantageous to use three flaps, it will be appreciated that a single flap may be sufficient especially where the bed to which the quilt or duvet is to be applied or located alongside a wall.
