Abstract
A synthetic resin, soluble in alcohol, is produced by condensing formaldehyde, a phenol and a polyoxyaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid, so that the oxybenzylalcohol resulting from the interaction of the phenol and formaldehyde forms a glucoside, the whole polymerizing to a resin. In an example phenol, formaldehyde, glucose and concentrated hydrochloric acid are heated to 65-70 DEG C. and the precipitated heavy oil washed with water and dried at a temperature not exceeding 55 DEG C. to form the resin. Other suitable phenols are crude cresol, thymol, carvacrol, pyrocatechin, guaiacol and resorcin. The resins may be employed as electric insulators and their solutions for varnishes and for impregnating woollen and hair textiles and woollen and fur felts. The Provisional Specification describes the use of a mineral acid generally.
