Annealing and tempering.-Steel and alloy objects, such as rails, susceptible of tempering bv spraying or sprinkling with liquid, are, whilst at a temperature above the critical point, repeatedly and alternately sprayed or sprinkled with cooling liquid and allowed to cool in air, the temperature of the cooling liquid during each individual spraying being varied by supplying hot and cold water to a mixing-cook or nozzle controlling the supply of liquid to the pipe &c. effecting the spraying &c. A part only of the article, such as the head of a rail, may be sprayed or sprinkled with the cooling liquid. Specification 195,147 is referred to.
