Abstract

In continuous treatment, such as dyeing, ribbons (2) are guided through a container (1) of treatment medium by guide rollers (3, 4) and are subsequently passed between two pressure rollers (5, 6) for squeezing out. To enable continuous treatment of special types of ribbons such as zip- fastener ribbons, bead ribbons, burr- closure ribbons and velvet without damage thereto, or non-uniform colour distribution in the case of dyeing, the pressure roller (5) associated with one side of the ribbon (2) being treated is designed as a brush roller. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for the treatment of continuous ribbons This invention relates to apparatus for the treatment of continuous ribbons, tapes or narrow webs (hereinafter referred to as ribbons) and particularly for the dyeing of such ribbons, Such apparatus comprises guide rollers for conducting each ribbon that is to be treated through a container containing a treatment medium and at least two subsequently-arranged pressure rollers, between which each ribbon that is to be treated is conducted for squeezing out.
With such apparatus it is possible to treat textile ribbons continuously. When the treatment consists of dyeing, the ribbons have to be conducted between the pressure rollers so that excess dye is squeezed out and the dye is distributed uniformly in the ribbon. However, this presupposes a specific pressure exerted by the pressure rollers on each ribbon.
A disadvantage of the known apparatus is that only substantially smooth ribbons can be treated therewith. Special types of ribbons, such as zip-fastener ribbons, beading ribbons, burr-fastener ribons (Regd. Tm Velcro), velvet ribbons cannot be treated with the known apparatus since as a result of the pressure of the pressure rollers the corresponding structures of the ribbons (burr-fasteners, velvet) are flattened, or else non-uniform colour distribution is brought about (in zip-fastener ribbons, beading ribbons). Accordingly, in the past it was usual to process such ribbons having one-sided structures in a boiler high-pressure process. However, since this is a discontinuous process, it is very time-consuming and costly.
The object of the invention is therefore to further develop apparatus of the kind mentioned at the beginning hereof in such a way that zip-fastener ribbons, beading ribbons (rim bands), burr-fastener ribbons, velvet ribbons etc. can be suitably treated in continuous manner.
This object is achieved in that, in each case, the pessure roller associated with one side of the ribbon that is to be treated is designed as a brush roller.
Advantageously, the bristles of the brush roller extend in the radiai direction.
In an advantageous embodiment the bristles of the brush roller are about 1.5 cm in length and, preferably, the bristles of the brush roller are about 0.25 mm in diameter. Furthermore, the density of bristles arranged on the brush roller is advantageously about 50g of bristles per square centimetre.
In a further advantageous embodiment, two brush rollers are associated with one normal pressure roller, the brush rollers being ar ranged diametrically opposite to each other.
Preferably, the or each brush roller is connected to a hydraulically or pneumatically actuable pressure cylinder for the adjustment of the contact pressure.
In a further advantageous embodiment, a treatment unit is connected subsequent to the pressure rollers and those guide rollers included in the treatment unit which are associated with the relevant one (upper or lower) side of the ribbon that is to be treated are also designed as brush rollers.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view of a first embodiment of apparatus in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a similar side view of a second embodiment of apparatus of the invention; and Figure 3 shows the apparatus as in Fig. 2 with a subsequently connected treatment unit.
A first embodiment of apparatus in accordance with the invention for the treatment of continuous ribbons, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises a container 1 of treatment medium, through which a ribbon 2 that is to be treated is conducted by way of a guide roller 3 and deflection rollers 4. Arranged subsequent to the container 1 are two pressure rollers 5 and 6, between which the ribbon 2 that is to be treated is conducted after leaving the container 1.
The pressure rollers 5 and 6 are arranged at a spacing and with their axes 7 and 8 parallel to one another, and the pressure roller 5 is designed as a brush roller. The axis of rotation 7 of the brush roller 5 is held by a piston rod 9 of a piston 10, which is guided displaceably in a pressure cylinder 11 which can be acted upon hydraulically or pneumatically. In this way the spacing of the axes of rotation 7 and 8 of the rollers 5, 6 can be varied and thus the desired pressure between the pressure rollers can be adjusted.
The bristles 12 of the brush roller 5 are about 1.5 cm in length and about 0.25 mm in diameter. About 509 of bristles per square centimetre are arranged on the brush roller 5.
In use, as indicated in Fig. 1, the ribbon 2 that is to be treated, in this case, for example, a velvet ribbon or a burr-closure ribbon, is conducted through the treatment device in such a way that the velvet threads or, respectively, the loops forming the burr-closure are associated with or facing the brush roller 5. In this way, on the one hand, a uniform colour uptake, and, on the other hand, a uniform squeezing-out of the ribbon 2 is ensured, without the velvet threads or the ioops forming the burr-closure being flattened.
A second embodiment of the invention, as shown in Fig. 2, consists of a three-roller dyeing foulard contrast to the two-roller dyeing foulard described in Fig. 1. With this apparatus the ribbon 2 that is to be treated runs twice through the container 1 containing the treatment medium. It is, in this respect, guided by way of guide rollers 3 and deflection rollers 4. Arranged subsequent to the container 1 is a pressure roller 6, and, associated therewith two brush rollers 5 and 5a at diametrically opposed sides of the normal roller 6. The brush rollers 5 and 5a are each variable in their spacing from the pressure roller 6 by way of respective pressure cylinders 11 and gila.
As shown in Fig. 3, a treatment unit may be arranged subsequent to the device illustrated in Fig. 2. This treatment unit consists of a steamer or dyestuff fixing unit 13, a water chamber or surge tank 14, a washing unit 15 and a squeezing unit 16. In this treatment unit all the guide rollers which are associated with the relevant side (i.e. the velvet pile, or the sides with burr connectors or any other relevant side of a special ribbon), in this case the upper side of the ribbon 2 that is to be treated are also designed as brush rollers 17, 18 and 19. Indeed, wherever fairly great pressure is exerted on the ribbon that is to be treated, brush rollers in accordance with the invention are used.
