Abstract

A cushioned base 2 formed from one or more air bags, possibly incorporating a raised pillow section 1, is attached to a tailor made sleeping compartment to form a single integrated unit by means of gluing, heat welding, 'velcro' (RTM) or 'zip' type fasteners or other means. The air bag or bags can be inflated or deflated using a valve. Access to the sleeping compartment is via its open end and by the use of a 'velcro' or 'zip' type fastener or other means to form a lengthwise join. Other variants include the addition of a hood to the sleeping compartment, the incorporation of a storage compartment into the air space of the base, and the facility for removal of the insulating section of the sleeping compartment. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Integral aircushioned sleeping bag or bed This invention relates to an integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed.
There are already many types of sleeping bag, the materials and construction of which are tailored to cater for the environment in which they are to be used. In these designs there are trade-offs between cost, comfort and compactness. A sleeping bag offers little cushioning or protection from the surface being slept upon, becoming particularly uncomfortable if the surface is uneven, wet or at high or low temperatures. Any form of separate mattressing is costly and lacks compactness. In addition a pillow is required.
In the present invention one or more deformable air bags made from tough, airtight and waterproof material form a base, possibly incorporating a raised pillow section, to a sleeping compartment. The sleeping compartment is tailor made to fit the base and is permanently joined to the base's upper surface by gluing, heat welding or other suitable methods, or can be attached by the use of clips, press studs, buttons, 'velcro' (R.T.M.), straps or 'zip' type fasteners, or other semipermanent methods. The integrated combination of the sleeping compartment and air cushioned base provides thermal protection and air cushion support for the occupant in a single unit. The sleeping compartment is accessible via its open end and by undoing the fastener providing a lengthwise join.A hood can be added to protect the head of the occupant either as a direct continuation of the sleeping compartment or as an extra part, attached to the sleeping compartment and base, by the methods previously described.
A storage compartment can be incorporated into the air space provided by the inflated air bag or bags. The integral air cushioned sleeping bag can be readily inflatable and deflatable to allow compact storage when not in use.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the unoccupied integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed.
Figure 2 is a logitudinal cross section through an occupied integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed Figure 3 is a lateral cross section through an unoccupied integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed.
Referring to the drawings the integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed comprises a cushioned base 2 made from one or more deformable air bags whereupon a tailor made sleeping compartment 5 is attached by means of gluing, heat welding, clips, buttons, 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fasteners or other suitable method of joining 7.
The integral air cushioned sleeping bag can be inflated or deflated through a valve 3. The base can extend to include a raised pillow section 2. The sleeping compartment can extend to form a hood either as an integral part of the compartent or as an extra part attached by 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fasteners or some other means. A storage compartment 6 can be contained within the airspace of the base. The sleeping compartment is accessible through its open end and by the use of a 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fastener or other suitable means forming a lengthwise join 4.
The facility for the removal of the insulating section of the sleeping comaprtment for use in hot environments can be accomplished by the use of a 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fastener or other semi permanent fastener to fix the insulating section onto the base. Many other variants of combined sleeping compartment and cushioned base can also be envisaged.
1. An integral air cusioned sleeping bag or bed comprising one or more air bags which form the base to a tailor made sleeping compartment integrally attached to the top surface of the base by gluing, heat welding, 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fasteners or some other means.
2. An integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed as described in claim 1 wherein the base is formed by one or more inflated sections extended to form a raised pillow section.
3. An integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed as described in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the air bag or bags are deflatable for compact storage and reflatable for use.
4. An integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed as described in preceding claims incorporating a storage compartment within the air space of the base.
5. An integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed as described in preceding claims wherein the sleeping compartment continues around the head of the occupant to form a hood either as an integral part of the compart ment or as a removable extra part attached to the sleeping compartment and base by 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fasteners, or other suitable means.
6. An integral air cushioned sleeping bag or bed as described in preceding claims incorporating the facility for removal of the insulating section of the sleeping compartment by the use of 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fasteners or other suitable means of attachment.
7. An integral air cushioned sleeping bag as described in preceding claims with a sleeping compartment made accessible by the use of 'velcro' (R.T.M.) or 'zip' type fastener or other suitable methods to form a lengthwise
