Abstract
A system is described whereby pigment dispersions are mounted in a spirit carrier in the proportions of from 2 per cent to 30 per cent W/V of pigment dispersion, of from 0 per cent to 10 per cent lipid for adhesion of pigment to animal skin, hair or wool and from 98 per cent to 60 per cent V/V of spirit carrier to a total of 100 per cent. This formulation system provides an agricultural stock marker in aerosol form which gives optimal colour, visibility drying speed and duration of mark.
Description
SPECIFICATION
An agricultural stock-marking aerosol system utilising spirit mounted pigment dispersions
We, Pharmavet Limited of the Industrial Estate, Riverview Road, Beverley, North Humberside HU17 OLD
Do Hereby Declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement.
It is known that those persons who regularly handle agricultural stock animals commonly use dye, paint and pigment containing aerosol marker sprays as aids to practical and efficient work. The formulations and presentations of such aerosol marker sprays for use on agricultural stock animals vary widely and encompass many systems currently in common usage throughout the agricultural and aerosol industries. The principle of all of these systems is that a coloured marking material is transferred from the aerosol can to the skin and/or coat of the animal concerned, and that this mark should serve as an indication for the future processing of that animal. The proposed invention relates to this principle, and proposes a system of component formulation whereby the usage of the aerosol marker spray is optimised.
The process plans relate to the component formulation, and include utilising aerosol containers, aerosol propellant systems, and valve systems currently in use We have found that the proposed formulation system optimises the coloured mark transferred to the animalin the following ways:
1. Brightness of color
2. Visibility of the mark
3. Speed of solvent evaporation as related to the "drying" of the mark, enabling the intended configuration of the coloured mark to remain, and so minimising any disfiguration of the mark caused by "running" of the pigment/Solvent system, and
4. duration of the mark
The formulation system consists of the use of pigment dispersions such as those marketed by Ellis
Jones Limited dispersed in a spirit carrier. The formulation range of the system varies from 2 per cent to 30 per cent of pigment dispersion and from 98 per cent to 60 per cent of spirit carrier to make a total of 100 per cent of completed product. Those Ellis Jones pigment dispersions that produce the optimum results in this formulation system are Printel Carmine KB65456 Printed Orange Y2G 55619
Eljon Blue DH15 55950 Eljon Black DH7 55442
Eljon Green DH7 55951
Eljon Yellow DH73 55471
Printel Violet KS 55620
However, the system is not confered solely to the above-named pigment dispersions. The spirit base may be either iso-propyl alcohol, industrial methylated spirits or acetone, alone or mixed.
A lipid, at concentrations of from 0 per cent to 10 per cent may be included to promote the adhesion of the pigment to the target animal skin, hair or wool as appropriate.
Example 1 Ellis Jones Limited pigment dispersion Eljon Green DH7 55951 is mixed by rapid stirring with isopropyl alchol in the proportions of 10 per cent WN of pigment dispersion and 90 per cent VN of isopropyl alcohol. When mixing is complete, aerosol sprays are made, the components of which consist of 70 per cent
VN of pigment dispersion/isopropyl alcohol mixture and 30 per cent VN of propellant gas. This aerosol spray gives a bright green mark on the skin and/or hair of a domestic stock animal which is distinctive, fast drying and durable.
Example 2
Ellis Jones Limited pigment dispersion Printel Carmine KB 55456 is mixed by rapid stirring with isopropyl alcohol in the proportions of 10 per cent of WN pigment dispersion 5 per cent WN of lanolin (a lipid, for adhesive purposes) and 85 per cent VN of isopropyl alcohol. When mixing is complete, aerosol sprays are made, the components of which consist of 70 per cent VN of pigment dispersion isopropyl alcohol mixture and 30 per cent VN of propellant gas. This aerosol spray gives a bright red mark on the skin and/or hair of a domestic stock animal which is distinctive, fast drying and durable.
This is one example, and the claims cover the whole system and are not restricted to the details given in the claim above.
