Abstract
217,454. Baglin, C. A. July 20, 1923. Coke ovens.-In a vertical flued regenerative coke oven having heating-flues connected in pairs for reversible operation, the gas and air supplied are so arranged that in one phase of operation combustion is effected in both flues of a pair, while in the other phase combustion takes place in one flue only, the other flue being utilized for the supply of air. As shown in connection with an oven in which the paired flues F, L are arranged transversely of the heating-wall, gas is supplied through a conduit I to the lower ends of the flues F, and through the nozzles 0 to the tops of the flues L, each flue being also connected at its lower end to one or other of the regenerator chambers D, R. In one phase of the reversible operation air is supplied through the regenerator D, and, say, three-quarters of the gas through the conduit I and the remainder through the nozzles O. Combustion takes place in both flues of the pairs, and the products escape through the regenerator R. In the other phase air from the regenerator R passes upwards through the flues L and meets the whole of the gas supplied through the nozzles 0, combustion taking place in the flues F and the products escaping through the regenerator D. The gas and air supply systems are preferably divided so that the firing of the two halves of the length of a heating-wall can be independently controlled. When the upper and lower gas supplies are both drawn from the same main the pipe for the upper supply is branched near its lower end, and three reversing valves are fitted for each unit of the gas supply system, one for controlling the lower supply, and the other for delivering full and reduced supplies at the top. The invention is also described in connection with an oven in which the connected pairs of flues are arranged longitudinally in the heating-wall.
