Description
SPECIFICATION
A trunking system component
This invention relates to a trunking system component constituting a backing plate member for receiving other components of the system.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a trunking system component constituting a backing plate member for receiving other components of the system, said backing plate member having an elongate base and including first and second engagement means, onto which corresponding engagement means of one or more other components of the system can be snap-fitted, said first and second engagement means extending from said base adjacent opposed longitudinally-extending edges of said base; said backing plate member further including third and fourth engagement means, onto which corresponding engagement means of said one or more other components or another component can be snap-fitted, said third and fourth engagement means extending parallel to said first and second engagement means and being on respective walls, which extend from said base and define between them with the base a channel inside said first and second engagement means.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a trunking system comprising a plurality of components snapfitted together, one of said components being a backing plate member which is essentially as defined in the preceding paragraph.
The third and fourth engagement means can each be arranged to receive the engagement means of two components.
Each of the engagement means on the backing plate member may be female engagement means and, if that is the case, the engagement means of the other components are
male engagement means.
At least one upstanding groove can be provided on the inside of the base between the first and third and/or between the third and fourth and/or the fourth and second engage
ment means, the or each upstanding groove
extending parallel to the engagement means of the backing plate member and being arranged to receive an associated partition member to
sub-divide the backing plate member into further compartments. Preferably, there are one
such upstanding groove between the first and
third engagement means, three such upstand
ing grooves between the third and fourth en
gagement means and one such upstanding
groove between the fourth and second en
gagement means, all of the grooves extending
the length of the backing plate member.
The backing plate member may include
means for securing it to a wall or the like.
Also, the reverse side of the base, i.e. the part which is intended to be secured against a wall or the like, is preferably ribbed. The backing plate member may be an extruded component.
The other components of the system may include a substantially flat cover plate member for fitting onto the backing plate member between the third and fourth engagement means, a corner member which is substantially
L-shaped in section, for fitting between the first and third or fourth and second engagement means, a corner member which is similar to the L-shaped corner member but is provided with an indentation to form the corner member as a recessed member, and a further corner member, which is also arranged to engage with the first and third or fourth and second engagement means of the backing plate member. This further corner member may comprise two spaced-apart narrow sides at right angles to one another joined by a major side with inside angles between the major side and respective narrow sides of 135 .
Another component of the system which can be fitted on the backing plate member may be a so-called extension piece which can be engaged with the first or second engagement means effectively to extend the width of the base of the backing plate member. Without the extension piece, three of the other components just discussed can be engaged on the backing plate member thereby to form three closed ducts, subdivided if needed by one or more of the partition members. With the extension piece, there are still three ducts but one of them is increased in cross-sectional area by the use of the extension piece.
Other components, such as a backing plate for an electrical socket or switch may be received on or in the backing plate member.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying draw

Figure 17 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a bridging member which can be fitted in between the two walls of the backing plate member to enable one set of cables or wires to cross another set,
Figure 18 is a diagrammatic perspective view illustrating a typical installation utilising the present trunking system components, and
Figure 19 is a diagrammatic perspective view illustrating another typical installation incorporating the present trunking system components.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, a trunking system component constituting a backing plate member 1 is illustrated, the member 1 being intended to receive other components of the system.
The backing plate member 1 is an extruded member with an elongate base 2 with first engagement means 3 and second engagement means 4, onto which engagement means corresponding engagement means of one or more other components of the system (to be described) can be snapfitted. The first and second engagement means 3 and 4 are in the form of female parts extending from the base adjacent and along the length of respective opposed longitudinally-extending edges of the base 2.
The backing plate member 1 further includes a third engagement means 5 and a fourth engagement means 6, onto which corresponding engagement means of one or more other components of the system to be described can be snapfitted, the third and fourth engagement means 5, 6 extending parallel to and having the same length as the first and second engagement means 3 and 4 and being on respective hollow walls 7 and 8 which extend from the base 2. The walls 7 and 8 define between them with the base 2 a channel 9 inside the engagement means 3 and 4. The engagement means 5 and 6 in fact have two grooves each so that two components can be snap-fitted into each engagement means 5 and 6.
The backing plate member 1 also includes longitudinally-extending grooves 10 upstanding from the base 2 into which appropriate partition members (not shown) can be inserted to subdivide the trunking ducts formed by the backing plate member 1 with the other trunking components to be described.
Figure 1 also shows cabling passing through the channel defined by the two walls 7 and 8 and a box 11 which can be fitted into the channel so that its top lies adjacent the engagement means 5 and 6. The box 11 can be one to receive a socket outlet, for example.
Figure 2 illustrates various cover components of the trunking system and shows them before engagement on the backing plate member 1.
Firstly, there is a central cover plate component 12 which is an elongate extruded plate having a male engagement means 12A depending from each longitudinal edge thereof, these engagement means 1 2A being for snapfitting engagement in respective grooves in the engagement means 5 and 6, respectively, of the backing plate member 1. As shown in
Figure 3, the cover plate component 12 defines with the backing plate member 1 a central, substantially rectangular duct 13 of the trunking. Figures 2 and 3 also illustrate a corner component 14 which is substantially Lshaped in cross-section with male engagement means 14A and 14B which can be snap-fitted into engagement with the engagement means 5 and 3 respectively, or 6 and 4 respectively.
Once fitted, the corner component 14 defines with the backing plate member 1 a substantially rectangular duct 15 of substantially half the width of the duct 13.
Another corner component 16 is illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, this one having two spaced-apart narrow sides 1 6A and 1 6B at right angles to one another joined by a larger side 1 6C defining with the respective sides 16A and 16B internal angles of 135 . The component 16 also has male engagement means 16D and 16E for engagement in the engagement means 5 and 3, respectively or the engagement means 6 and 4, respectively, of the backing plate member 1. As seen in
Figure 3, the corner component 16 when fitted on the backing plate member 1 gives the appearance of a cornice lid and defines with the backing plate member 1 an angled duct 17 outside the duct 13.
Figures 4 and 5 are similar views to Figures 2 and 3, respectively, but show two further components of the trunking system which can be snap-fitted on the backing plate member 1.
Firstly, another type of corner component 18 is shown, this corner component 18 being similar to the L-shaped corner component 14 but being indented at 1 8A to provide a recessed corner component. As with the other corner components, the recessed corner component 18 has two male engagement means 18B and 18C for engagement with the engagement means 6 and 4, respectively, or the engagement means 5 and 3, respectively, of the backing plate member 1. The recessed corner component 18 may be ribbed as shown.
Figures 4 and 5 also show an extension piece component 19 with a male engagement means 1 9A for engagement in the engage ment means 3 or 4 of the backing plate member 1. The extension piece component 19 is substantially L-shaped in cross-section and also has a female engagement means 1 9B into which a corresponding male engagement means 12A of a cover plate component 12 can be snap-fitted. The part of the extension piece component 19 which is intended to lie adjacent to the base 2 of the backing plate member 1 (see Figure 5) is also provided with an upstanding groove 19C which serves the same purpose as the grooves 10 in the backing plate member 1.It will be seen that the engagement means 19B, when the extension piece component 19 is fitted on to the backing plate member 1, is at the same height as the engagement means 5 and 6 of the member 1. Accordingly, this extension piece 19 has the effect of doubling the width of the outside duct of the trunking to make it the same width as the central duct 9. Accordingly, as shown in Figure 4 and 5, two cover plates 12 are provided, adjacent edges of the cover plates 12 fitting in adjacent grooves of the engagement means 5 of the cover plate member 1. Of course, if the extension piece component 19 were to be fitted on the opposite side of the backing plate member 1, then the adjacent edges of the cover plates 12 would be fitted in respective grooves of the engagement means 6 of the backing plate member 1.
Figure 6 illustrates a possible combination of components which comprises the backing plate member 1, two extension piece components 19, one on either side of the backing plate member 1, and three cover plates 12.
Figure 7 illustrates the backing plate member 1 with the extension piece component 19 on the right-hand side thereof and the Lshaped corner component 14 on the left-hand side thereof. Two cover plates 1 2 are also shown.
Figure 8 shows a combination of components where the extension piece component 19 is fitted on the left-hand side of the backing plate member 1 and a recessed corner component 18 is fitted on the right-hand side of the member 1. Once again, two cover plates 12 are provided. Figure 9 illustrates a combination where the cornice corner component 16 is fitted on the left-hand side of the backing plate member 1 and the extension piece component 19 is fitted on the right-hand side of the member 1 and two cover plates 12 are provided.
Figure 10 shows a combination of the cornice corner component 16 fitted on the lefthand side of the backing plate 1 and the Lshaped corner component 14 fitted on the right-hand side of the member 1.
n this combination, only a single cover plate 12 is provided. This view corresponds to the combination illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
Figure 11 illustrates a combination where two recessed corner components 18 are provided with a single cover plate 12 between them.
Figure 12 illustrates a combination where two L-shaped corner components 14 are provided with a cover plate 12 fitted between them.
Figure 13 illustrates the L-shaped corner component 14 fitted on the left-hand side of the backing plate member 1 and the recessed corner component 18 fitted on the right-hand side of the member 1, with a single cover plate 12 between them.
Figure 14 illustrates two cornice corner components 16, one fitted on either side of the backing plate member 1 and, once again, a single cover plate 12 between them.
Figure 15 shows a combination of the cornice corner component 16 fitted on one side of the backing plate member 1 and the recessed corner component 18 fitted on the other side with, again, the cover plate 12 between them.
It will be appreciated that, with the various combinations illustrated, the relative positions of the outer components can be reversed.
Figure 16 illustrates another component of the trunking system which can be fitted on the backing plate member 1. This component is a spout cable outlet 20 which has the same basic profile as the cornice corner component 16 and is intended to fit in the same places as that component but it also has a spout opening through which cables and wires from the main trunking may be led.
Figure 17 shows a bridging component 21 which can be fitted in the duct 9 so that its feet 21A sit on the base 2 of the backing plate member 1, the component 21 enabling cables to be taken across other cabling such as service wires, affording protection to both sets of cables. Holes can be punched in the walls 7 and 8 to gain access to the central duct from the outer ducts.
Figure 18 illustrates a typical section of trunking installation incorporating the present backing plate member 1 and in the view illustrated, the following components are visible: the backing plate member 1, cover plates 12, recessed corner components 18 and cornice corner components 16. In addition, angled cornice components 16A, angled cover plates 12 and angled recessed components 18A are also visible, these latter components enabling the trunking to extend around external corners. Of course, other comparable components can be provided to enable the trunking to extend around internal corners.
Figure 19 illustrates another example where various components of the trunking system are visible, the same being fitted at skirting level with a carpet 21 covering the recessed corner component 18 and also illustrating socket outlets 22 and the backing plate member 1 secured to a wall 23.
It will be appreciated that the trunking sys
tem described can be used for the contain
ment of electrical cables at skirting and dado
level. Also the multiple compartments and the
partition members which can be fitted into the
grooves 10 permit a great variety of segregation.
