Abstract
This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for rockbolting. The method includes the steps of spinning and forcing a bolt (10) into a hole which carries a settable material by engaging a cross member (18) on a rotatable tool in a slot (14) in the end of the bolt (10) and spinning the bolt (10) by means of the machine. The apparatus includes a rock bolt (10) which carries a diametrical slot (14) in one end and a spinning tool which includes a tube (15) which carries a cross member (18) for engagement in the slot (14) in the bolt. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Rock bolting
This invention relates to a rock bolt and a method of rock or anchor bolting using the bolt.
Rock and anchor bolting in which quick setting cementitious material or resin is used to set a bolt in a wall or hanging in tunnels and mines is well known. The conventional method of bolting consists in drilling a hole into whatever is to hold an anchor or be stabilised, filling or partially filling the hole with soaked cementitious or two component resin capsules, forcing a bolt into the hole and spinning it to rupture the capsules to release their contents, locating a washer over the exposed end of the bolt when the bolt has been fully driven into the hole and pulling up a nut on the bolt to hold the washer under pressure against the face of whatever carries the hole.
The bolt may be threaded over its length but more conventionally is threaded over only a portion of its length from one end. One method of spinning the bolt is to lock the bolt nut to the threaded end of the rod by deforming either the rod or bolt threads so that the nut will rotate on the threads only when a predetermined torque is applied to the nut and engaging a chuck or socket of a spinning machine over the nut to spin the rod until the settable material grips the rod sufficiently to release the nut. Another method is to square the threaded end of the rod and engage the rod square in a complementally shaped socket on the spinning machine.
It is the object of this invention to provide a simple method of spinning a rock bolt and a bolt for use with the method.
A method of rock bolting according to the invention includes the steps of spinning and forcing a bolt into a hole which carries a settable material by engaging a cross member on a rotatable machine in a slot in the end of the bolt and spinning the bolt by means of the machine.
Conveniently the cross member is a blade which is located in and across a tube which is dimensioned to surround the slotted end of the bolt.
A rock bolt according to the invention carries a slot across its one end.
A slotted rock bolt in combination with a tool for spinning the bolt according to the invention includes a tool which consists of a tube which is dimensioned to surround a portion of the length of the slotted end of the bolt, a cross member in the tube for engaging the slot in the end of the bolt when the tube is located over the end of the bolt and means for attaching the tool to a machine for spinning the tool.
An embodiment of the invention is now described by way of example only with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of the rock bolt of the invention and a sectioned side elevation of a tool for spinning the bolt; and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the tool shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 of the drawings shows the rock bolt of the invention to consist of a rod 10 which is threaded at one end and a freely rotatable anchor nut 12. The threaded end of the rod 10 carries a diametrical slot 14.
The spinning tool consists of a tube or socket 16 which carries a blade 18 which is fixed to the socket across its mouth. The lower end of the tube or socket 16 is fixed or adapted to be attached in any suitable manner to a bolt spinning machine.
In use the bolt hole is charged in the conventional manner with capsules of a settable material. A washer is located over the bolt and the nut 12 engaged with its end as shown in the drawing. The slot 14 may be preformed in the bolt end or could be cut in situ.
A conventional bolt spinning machine which carries the spinning tool is engaged with the tube or socket 16 of the tool over the slotted end of the bolt with the blade 18 located in the slot 14.
The bolt is now spun and pressed in stages, as is conventional, through the capsules in the hole until correctly located. The spinning machine is disengaged from the bolt and the nut 12 is pulled up against the seated washer.
The invention is not limited to the precise details as herein described. The slot 14 could, for example, be cruciform in shape. The tool blade 18 would in this event be complementally shaped. Additionally, the blade 18 could be replaced by a hard metal pin which is located across the mouth of the tube 16.
1. A method of rock bolting including the steps of spinning and forcing a bolt into a hole which carries a settable material by engaging a cross member on a rotatable machine in a slot in the end of the bolt and spinning the bolt by means of the machine.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1 in which the cross member is located in and across a tube which is dimensioned to surround a portion of the length of the slotted end of the bolt and the method includes the step of locating the tube over the slotted end of the bolt until the cross member engages in the bolt slot and then spinning the bolt.
3. A rock bolt which carries a slot diametrically across its one end.
4. A rock bolt as claimed in Claim 3 in which at least a portion of the length of the bolt from its slotted end is threaded.
5. A rock bolt as claimed in either one of
